Elara stood in the grand kitchen, trying to focus on the tea she was making. She had promised herself she wouldn’t let Cassia or Nathaniel’s intensity shake her—but the simmering tension in the house was impossible to ignore.
And then Cassia appeared, as if summoned by her nerves.
“Well, look who’s trying to play house,” Cassia said, voice smooth, mocking. Her eyes glinted with amusement. “I almost forgot what a fragile little thing you are.”
Elara froze, hands tightening around the teacup. “I’m not fragile,” she said, forcing calm into her voice.
Cassia smiled, sharp and predatory. “Are you sure? Because Nathaniel seems… protective. Almost worried.”
At that moment, Nathaniel appeared behind Cassia, his presence like a shadow filling the room. “Enough,” he said, low and dangerous. His eyes swept over Elara with something she couldn’t name—a mix of warning and… concern?
Cassia stepped back, though the smirk never left her lips. “Very well. For now,” she said, turning sharply.
Nathaniel’s gaze returned to Elara. “Did that intimidate you?”
“No,” she said, though her pulse betrayed her.
He studied her for a moment, then nodded. “Good. You need to understand something about this house… and about me. No one threatens what belongs under my protection.”
Elara’s stomach twisted. Belongs?
“Am I… just under contract?” she asked quietly. “Or… something more?”
Nathaniel didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stepped closer, just enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him. “For the duration of this contract, you obey the rules. But outside of that… we’ll see.”
Her breath caught. We’ll see?
He turned and left the kitchen, the door closing with a definitive click. Elara was left alone, heart hammering, staring at the tea she could no longer hold steady.
Cassia’s words lingered, but so did Nathaniel’s presence. Something was shifting in the house—and Elara knew, with a mix of fear and anticipation, that it wasn’t just her contract or her survival at stake anymore.
It was something far more dangerous: the pull between her and him.
