12-Wolfless

- Finn’s POV - I was playing billiards with Nate when a sharp pain hit my chest, forcing me to drop everything and hold on to the table to steady myself. “Hey man, are you ok?” Nate asked awkwardly. “Something is wrong with mate, go to mate!” My wolf repeated frantically in my head. I ignored Nate and gave in to the urge to need to know what was wrong. I’ve never felt this kind of pain before. It was like someone stabbed me in the chest unleashing an irrational fear and a rush of adrenaline. I ran out of the east wing and tried to find her scent. As I neared the entrance of the forest, I smelled her, cherry blossoms and soon, I saw Leyton running towards me with Kayla in his arms. I had to calm my wolf down and reminded myself that she only knows him as her brother and that I didn’t even want her as a mate. “We need to get her to the hospital! She hit her head when we fell to avoid a falling tree,” shouted Leyton as the storm threatened to get louder by the minute. I growled at him, angry that he allowed her to get hurt and also angry at myself for caring. We ran to my car and I drove us to nearest hospital within our pack’s land. When we finally sent Kayla off into the emergency room, Leyton collapsed on the ground and covered his face with his hands. Seeing how torn apart my friend was, I felt regret for being so hard on him. “Hey, you did your best. She’s gonna be fine. It’s gonna be ok,” I consoled him. “You don’t understand. It was my fault. She told me we needed to go back to the pack house but I wouldn’t listen. Then suddenly the storm came and a lightning struck the tree behind us. She hit her head because she pushed me out of the way first. She tried to jump out of the way but it was too late and her ankle was caught by the fallen tree making her fall and her head landed on a rock. If anything happens to her, it’s my fault and I’m her brother, I promised Mum to always care for her.” Leyton was inconsolable and I didn’t have the heart to tell him to go clean up the blood on his arms, the blood of my mate. “It was an accident, Leyton. It’s not your fault. She couldn’t have known what was going to happen and it was just a coincidence that she wanted to go back to the pack house before the accident. She’s gonna be fine, ok.” I squeezed his shoulders gently and waited with him for news. Finally, after what seems like an eternity, the doctor came out of the emergency room. He looked at us and said, “Kayla will be fine, that’s the good news. The bad news is that she will take longer to recover because she is wolfless. Her ankle is sprained but the wound on her head isn’t serious and she should be healed in a few weeks.” I felt my wolf relaxed even as my feelings were mixed. Everything was reminding me that my mate is wolfless and I need a better mate.
