Chapter 1: A Quiet Beginning
It started like any other afternoon. The sun was lazy in the sky, dripping golden heat into every corner of our little hostel room. The fan spun halfheartedly above our heads, pushing the air just enough to remind us that it was still alive, and the room buzzed with low chaos... the kind only four girls living together could create. Clara was ranting about a lecturer who gave her a D despite her “clear, logically arranged arguments.” Tina, who never took anything seriously, was sprawled on her bed, gasping dramatically because a guy from Engineering had finally texted her. Becky, the most dramatic of us all, was halfway into someone else’s wardrobe, shrieking about how her “perfect lip gloss” had mysteriously disappeared. And me? I was lying on my bed, back against the wall, laughing softly. Their noise washed over me like waves... chaotic, relentless, oddly comforting. But deep down, I was secretly longing for air. “I’m going to the supermarket,” I said, slipping into my slippers. In true roommate fashion, they pounced. “Zora, help me get yogurt,” Clara ordered without looking up. “Buy me biscuits.. the chocolate-filled ones, not the dry nonsense,” Tina called out, phone still glued to her face. “Face mask!” Becky added dramatically. “And soap! I ran out this morning.” I didn’t mind. I liked errands. They gave me an excuse to walk alone, away from the chatter, away from the mess, away even from the endless noise in my own head. There’s something about walking by yourself headphones in, sunlight brushing your shoulders, bag swinging gently by your side. It makes you feel like you’re part of something bigger. Like maybe you’re about to walk into a moment you’ve only imagined. And sometimes, I do imagine. What if I met him there? Not just any “him.” But the him. The boy I can’t explain but always see in my head… like a story waiting to unfold. Maybe he’d smile while handing me something I dropped. Maybe we’d both reach for the same snack...l like in the K-dramas I always binge-watch. Maybe he’d look at me like I wasn’t the girl who always fades into the background. Maybe. But today, I wasn’t thinking about him. Not really. I just needed a break. Or at least… I thought I did. The streets outside buzzed with life .... vendors calling out, motorcycles speeding past, the smell of roasted corn drifting in the air. I walked slowly, my playlist filling my ears, my heart easing with every step further from the room. I didn’t notice him at first. Not until I reached the corner near the old stationery shop and felt someone’s gaze linger. A boy stood across the street. He wasn’t in uniform like the rest of the students milling around. His shirt was crisp, his posture calm, but there was something restless in his eyes. His presence seemed to command attention, yet he looked oddly distant from the world around him. The whispers started almost instantly from a group of students nearby. “Who’s that?” “He looks rich.” “I think I’ve seen him before…” Heat rose to my cheeks. I quickly lowered my eyes and pretended to adjust my bag. Whoever he was, he wasn’t someone who’d notice a girl like me. I was just Zora .... quiet, invisible, good at fading into the background. Still, for reasons I couldn’t explain, my steps slowed. My chest tightened with something between curiosity and fear. And though I turned away, I could feel it... his eyes hadn’t left me.
