~ Song ~ Fire Meets Fate - Ruelle ~
"You have a weapon Fairy." She gave him an incredulous look before placing her hand in his outstretched hand. He pulled her up effortlessly, making her stumble into him. "Me."
After a moment she was able to regain her stunned self, stepping backwards. Nicholas's cocky smirk remained.
"I'd like a better weapon." Faye said, glancing down at the dead body of the berserk.
Nicholas chuckled. "That's not very nice Fairy." He scolded teasingly.
"Do you think there are more?" Faye asked between uneven breaths.
Nicholas glanced around, his eyes barely able to see through the fog. "Let's find out."
He turned back to Faye, smirking. She took a deep breath, shaking her head slightly before walking forward. Nicholas fell into step beside her, wiping his blood stained hands on his black handkerchief, though most of the blood remained.
They walked through the village until mid day, unable to find another berserk. With the job supposedly finished, they started to leave the village, walking past a house they hadn't passed by before.
The house caught Faye's eye, making her steps come to a stop. The house, unlike the rest, something about it looked less 'dead'. There was a small daisy blooming by the steps, the wood though rotten seemed brighter somehow.
"What?" Nicholas asked, glancing at Faye and following her line of sight.
"There's something in there." She said, unable to look away.
Nicholas also noticing the difference began walking forward, Faye quickly followed after him. The house seemed to be graced with natural light, making it easier for Faye to see but still not as well as Nicholas.
His body tensed as he breathed in, his mind reeling. He rushed forward, slamming open the bedroom door. His eyes narrowed on the figure hiding in the corner.
Faye peeked past Nicholas, noticing his strange reaction. At first she wondered why he was acting that way to an empty room until her eyes saw the slight movement of the shaking body. A gasp left her lips, her eyes widening.
"Why... Why is there a boy here?" She asked.
She wanted to push past Nicholas and get to the boy but he had blocked her from entering the room.
"Stay here." His tone was firm, making her oblige.
He walked forward cautiously, checking the closet on his way past. The boy slowly craned his head up, his green eyes glassy from unshed tears. Nicholas couldn't believe what he was seeing, the boy though skinny and covered in filth, had not one wound inflicted by a berserk.
"How long have you been here boy?"
The boy winced at his rough tone. "A few weeks at guess sir." He answered timidly.
"How are you alive?" Nicholas eyes narrowed, it was simply not possible. "You understand this village had berserks?"
The boy nodded his head, his dirty blonde hair falling over his face. "I saw them."
"And you are still alive? How?" He growled out lowly.
Faye couldn't take it anymore and walked forward, completely ignoring Nicholas death glare as she knelt in front of the boy.
"We're not going to hurt you." She said softly. "What's your name?"
The boy glanced between the two, he knew the man was a vampire but wondered what the female was. She gave off a welcoming and gentle air, something a vampire wouldn't do but there was something about her that was different.
"My.. my name is Jesse." He said. "But they called me Erebus."
"Who?" Nicholas asked.
"The people that brought me here."
Faye turned over her shoulder and glanced up at Nicholas. His eyebrows were creased together, his jaw tense. She wondered why anyone would leave a small child in a place like this, who would ever be able to do that.
"Did you know there names?" Faye asked.
Jesse shook his head. From what they could see he looked human but as Faye had come to learn, that didn't always mean they were.
Nicholas walked to the door, cursing under his breath. Faye sighed, giving Jesse a soft look before following Nicholas.
His agitation was obvious, this was the last thing he was expecting.
"What are you going to do?" She asked, worry laced through her soft voice.
Nicholas turned to her, his eyes skimming over her and staring at the boy sitting in the corner before returning to her crystal blue eyes.
"There's no human explanation as to why the berserks just left him alone. They kill everything, from baby to elder, female to male. All they see is prey."
"You're going to kill him?" She uttered out in complete disbelief, Nicholas averted his gaze from hers. "Master Nico! He is just a kid!"
He ran his hand through his tousled hair, not caring about the blood that remained on his fingers. His jaw was clenched tightly, his nostrils flaring as he breathed.
"He must be a witch or worse, some creature I don't even know about." He said through gritted teeth. "You're sweet but terribly naive Faye, you don't understand how dangerous this one boy could potentially be."
"Exactly, potentially. We don't know, you can't kill him just because the berserks didn't."
Faye raised her voice, her face reddening slightly from the anger she was trying to hold back. Nicholas gave her a sharp look, his eyes darkening.
"This is my job Faye." He snapped, grabbing her by the shoulders and slamming her back into the wall. "I kill things like him."
Despite his rough actions Faye couldn't back down. She was too stubborn, something Nicholas was just learning.
"You're just going to kill him because you're unsure? Because you don't know." Her eyebrows were set in a frown, a certain sadness in her eyes. "How is that fair?"
"I never said it was fair." His voice deep and guttural. "Life isn't fair Faye, it's about time you learnt that."
He released her and stepped backwards, keeping his hardened eyes on hers. "You're really going to kill a child?"
"He could be dangerous."
"Dangerous to what exactly? Humans or vampires?" There was disgust clear in her voice as she spoke. "Don't act like a hero when I know your only intention is to make sure there is no other creature alive that is able to get rid of your abominable race."
He breathed in, trying to calm the tornado of anger in his mind. He knew his rage was about to snap free, his patience being tested one too many times lately.
"You have no say in the matter." He growled out lowly. He stepped forward to walk out of the house but stopped beside Faye. "Try anything and I'll kill you too."
Faye sucked in a breath, her blood turning cold. He was completely serious, giving Faye a wake up call. She couldn't argue with Nicholas on things like this, they were his specialty and she was simply a slave.
She turned once he had walked out of the house, her eyes scanning over Jesse. He had probably heard their conversation, especially if he was supernatural but he didn't seem to care.
Nicholas walked back inside after contacting some nearby councilmen. His eyes skimmed over Faye, noticing the slightly more submissive look she had. His lips curled up slightly at the fire that was still burning brightly in her eyes.
Even if she feared for her life, she still had some fight in her. She was amusing and interesting to Nicholas, many cowered in fear just from a glance from him, even vampires considered strong, but Faye was a different kind of strong.
They waited in the small house, Nicholas continued to ask Jesse questions but didn't really get any helpful answers. He was confused and scared, he was separated from his parents and then purposely left in a berserk village.
"The woman told me to wait here. That they would come back for me." Jesse's green eyes were filled with pain, he couldn't understand why he was left there either.
"It's likely fortunate they haven't returned for you yet." Nicholas said. "If they left you here I'm sure they could do worse."
Jesse nodded slowly, he agreed. He didn't like the people who had left him here, they gave off a strange and unwelcoming air. Despite how scary Nicholas was, he couldn't help but feel safer with him and Faye.
"You're going to kill me right?" He asked, his green eyes glassy.
Nicholas glanced over his shoulder at Faye who had her eyes closed as she leaned against the wall. He could tell she wasn't asleep but he knew she had escaped into her mind like she often did.
"I may." Nicholas answered.
"I am human sir." Jesse said. "I swear. My parents were human, we were just normal people."
"This is a story I have heard before." Nicholas said, taking another glance at Faye.
Something about Jesse reminded him of Faye but he couldn't put his finger on what exactly it was. Perhaps it was the will to live.
"It's a true story." He said. "As is hers."
Jesse's words made Nicholas turn his attention back to him, his eyebrows raised on the seemingly perceptive boy. His lips curled up ever so slightly as he softly shook his head with amusement.
"Is that so?" He hummed.
"I like her." Jesse said with a sad smile. "She reminds me of home."
Nicholas stared at the boy, recognising the agonising pain in his eyes. Even someone as evil as Nicholas had to admit he was too young to have eyes that mirrored his own. He stood up, his eyes resting on Faye.
"Home.." He spoke under his breath.
Faye opened her eyes, completely unaware of the conversation that had just taken place. Her eyes instantly found Nicholas's as he watched her studiously. She frowned and glanced at Jesse who appeared to be lost in his thoughts.
A sudden noise made her flinch, her head whipped to the side where she saw two vampires entering the house. Nicholas walked forward, standing in the doorway beside where she was sitting.
"Councilmen." Nicholas greeted with a scornful smile. "You are finally here."
"Apologies my Lord."
Both vampires glanced down at Faye, her beating heart echoing in their minds. Nicholas didn't allow their attention to remain on her for long, he snapped his fingers, growling under his breath.
"You're here to do a job." He said, motioning to Jesse who was watching the exchange with worried eyes.
The vampires gulped at the look in Nicholas's eyes, making note to never even glance at his pet again. They were having a peaceful day until Nicholas called for the nearest men that were, unfortunately, them.
They looked at the boy, their eyebrows furrowing together. Curious as to why Nicholas needed them to handle a human boy, they glanced at each other before looking at Nicholas.
Nicholas rolled his jaw, clenching it and glaring at his incompetent councilmen.
"Jesse." He said, glancing at the boy. "It's time to go."
Jesse swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat, pulling his weak body off the ground and walking to the three vampires. Faye also stood, her worried eyes set on Jesse.
The two councilmen walked ahead, leading Jesse out of the building. Nicholas walked behind them, Faye slowly trailing.
Just before Nicholas stepped over the threshold of the house, his steps stopped. Faye stared at the back of his head, her eyebrows furrowing.
"I'm not the one trying to be the hero." He spoke, his voice intense. "You are and in our world, that's what will get you killed."
He walked off, leaving Faye frozen in place by the weight of his words.
Jesse was already on one of the horses when Nicholas reached them. He glanced up at the boy before pulling one of the vampires over.
"Put him in one of the chambers, keep him fed and healthy. Make sure he is under Raymonds care. Tell him it is a direct order from me." The councilman nodded his head, noticing Nicholas's quiet but merciless tone. "Keep a close eye on Jesse and only conduct experiments that a child can handle. Search for any alive relatives and if he doesn't show any signs of being supernatural you release him to his relatives."
"Yes my Lord. I will inform Sir Raymond as soon as we arrive."
"Good." He watched as they climbed on their horses. "If I find out any unnecessary harm comes to the boy, you all will be answering to me."
They nodded their heads, glancing at the boy and wondering why he seemed so important to Nicholas. Faye watched the whole exchange, even from a distance she could feel the solemnity.
Jesse waved at them both as they rode off, though she was glad to see him leaving the village she was sad for his inevitable fate.
Nicholas returned to the steps of the house, staring up at Faye. A soft sigh escaped her lips, her eyes finding Nicholas's.
"Are we done now?"
Nicholas nodded at her question. The day hadn't gone as he had planned but in a way it had still worked.
Faye looked dejected, believing she was unable to help Jesse but despite that, a part of her was energized from the hunt.
Nicholas could see the spark brewing in her eyes and knew the day hadn't completely failed.
They walked side by side through the fog that was slowly beginning to fade.
"Perhaps." Nicholas suddenly said, causing Faye to glance up at him. "Perhaps you can have a weapon."
She pursed her lips and looked forward, ignoring his sly smirk. She shook her head softly, fighting the sudden unfamiliar urge to smile. She was still mad at him but Nicholas always had an annoying way of getting under her skin. She had yet to understand why.
