Chapter 50

~ Song ~ Deep End - Ruelle Faye's POV The rest of the day went by quickly. Once we had returned back to the inn we got cleaned up and ate. The exhaustion from the eventful day had hit me hard, allowing my body to relax on the bed and be swept into a coma like sleep.  The next morning went by slowly, Nicholas didn't speak much and my mind was focused on thoughts of Jesse. I was praying that somehow, someway, Jesse would survive the fate that had unfairly been bestowed upon him.  A few hours passed, Nicholas didn't speak once while he continued to write. At first it was a letter, then he started writing in a journal. The sound of the pen being placed on the table made me lift my head expectantly.  Nicholas watched my reaction, a playful smirk on his lips. "Let's go shall we Fairy?" "Where?" I asked as I stood from my chair.  He put his coat on, helping me when I struggled with mine.  "There is a village not far from here. Suspected witch attack the other night."  Achlys as usual was ready and waiting. Nicholas helped me on before climbing on himself, kicking her on. The village really wasn't far from the inn, it was almost hauntingly close. The villagers were all hiding in their homes as we rode down the street.  I could see them peeking out the windows, I could feel their fear. My eyes widened when a dead body came into view. I gasped, my hand covering my agape mouth.  The woman's body was lying in the middle of the town center, there wasn't a single flower near her dead body. Nicholas had said it happened the other night, just how many days has the woman's body been laying there? "Why..?" I asked, covering my nose as we got closer.  The potent smell of death making me want to empty the contents of my stomach.  "Some villages believe if one of their own are killed by a witch, that the body is tainted. They won't go near it or leave flowers. The council have to deal with it." He answered.  "That's horrible." I muttered. "What about her family?"  "Humans often put their beliefs above their family Fairy."  I frowned at his words but couldn't help but agree in that moment. She was somebody's daughter, probably a wife and mother yet her body was left to rot because it was believed to be 'tainted'.  Nicholas tied Achlys up a small distance away from the body, helping me down before walking to a few councilmen I had failed to notice earlier. I didn't follow him, my legs were frozen as I stood beside Achlys staring at the body.  The familiar chills began to climb up my arms, making my body shiver. I shook my head as if it would shake the chills from my body and watched as Nicholas examined the body.  The sound of something falling in the alley beside me made my eyes tear from the body. I stared down the alley, my heart beating like a drum in my chest. "Faye!" The soft whisper made my eyebrows furrow together. I took a small step forward, squinting my eyes as if that would help me see where the voice was coming from. "Faye!" The voice sounded familiar but I couldn't think of who it could be. Only when I caught a glimpse of his blonde hair and dull blue eyes did I realise who it was. "Karter!" I gasped quietly, quickly glancing behind me to check if anyone heard me. Nicholas was busy examining the body and talking to the other councilmen. "Come Faye. Quickly." Karter said. I sighed and quickly stepped forward into the alley, following his voice until my body was pulled to the side. I yelped and shut my eyes tightly. "Relax." He whispered in my ear. I opened my eyes, he looked different from the boy I met at the village. His eyes were darker, still dull but darker.  "Karter." I breathed, relieved to see him but also worried. My mind flashed with thoughts I didn't want but I couldn't push them away. Karter was always around when an attack happened and it didn't sit well with me, despite the strange connection we shared. "Why are you here?" I asked, unable to stop my voice from sounding accusing. Judging by his expression he caught on. "I was just traveling through with my group." He answered innocently.  I glanced around anxiously, I was worried Nicholas would soon realise I was gone. I feared what would happen to Karter if he did find us but a part of me wondered why.  Why should I be worried when Karter was just an innocent human I was talking to? He had done nothing wrong right? I wanted to believe that, I tried to force myself too but there was a nagging in the back of my mind telling me not to.  The chills still surrounded me despite the dead body not being in sight and I couldn't help but wonder if it was him. I didn't want to see Karter as a heartless murderer but his eyes had changed, they were dark.  "You should go before Nico comes." I mumbled, staring into his eyes.  "Nico?" He questioned with raised eyebrows. "He has a nickname now?"  I chewed my bottom lip nervously. "Please Karter, I don't want you to get hurt."  "And I don't want you to get hurt."  Though I knew better, at first my mind registered his words as a threat. I breathed in, pushing that to the back of my mind.  "He doesn't hurt me." In fact he seemed to do the opposite.  Karter gave me an incredulous look, shaking his head as if I was damaged victim that knew no better.  "He has infected your mind Faye. He is evil, pure disgusting evil. You need to get away before he causes any more damage to you."  "Karter.." He grabbed my shoulders, making me flinch. "This is the perfect chance for you to join us Faye. My group they are here, you'll be safe once you come with us. I promise." His lips curled up in a hopeful smile.  I knew too that this was the perfect chance for me to escape Nicholas. We were away from his home, it'd be easier to stay hidden from him.  If this opportunity had presented itself earlier there was no doubt in my mind I would've taken it but as I stood in front of Karter all I could do was shake my head numbly.  I couldn't even answer myself as to why I couldn't go with him, I'm sure there were many reasons but none were clear in that moment.  "I can't." I whispered.  His smile dropped at my words, his eyes clouding with disbelief. I stepped backwards out of his grasp, a frown etched on my face. Karter had always reminded me of myself but I couldn't help but think that the Karter I saw now was a shadow of who I could've become had I chose the wrong path.  "He kidnapped you, you're his slave. Do you seriously think that he cares about you? All you are is entertainment and food, you'll never be anything more than that in his eyes." He spoke with venom, making me wince. "He bought me, he owns me. I know I am his slave Karter, I could never forget that but I have unfinished business with him. I can't leave yet, I still have so many questions."  His nostrils flared as he breathed, his eyebrows furrowed with anger. He looked at me as if I was a stranger and I looked at him the same.  "You're making a big mistake Faye. You're on the wrong side."  "I'm not on a side." I said with a frown. "An innocent woman is dead, her body lying in the middle of the street. That is wrong and it wasn't Nicholas or the vampires who did it." I raised my voice slightly, shaking my head.  "It could've been a vampire, how would you know?"  "Because I know Karter." I said. "And those five vampires brutally murdered with daggers infused with magic, the witch symbols covering their bodies. Does that not seem wrong to you?"  "They were vampires. They deserved it."  "Their race shouldn't be here sure but not even vampires deserve such a torturous death filled with so much evil and darkness."  Karter when to speak but he suddenly stilled. I knew instantly it was Nicholas, I wasn't sure how but I knew. I turned around just as Nicholas turned the corner, his eyes darting around until they landed on me.  I sucked in a breath, turning around with wide eyes to be met with nothing. My eyebrows furrowed together as I glanced around, Karter was nowhere in sight. He was gone.  "Fairy!" Nicholas called, agitation clear in his voice.  I took a deep breath and turned around. "Sorry Master Nico." I murmured as I walked towards him.  "What the hell are you doing down here?" He asked.  His eyes quickly scanned over my body as he reached me before he glanced around the alley, his eyes narrowing.  "I.. I couldn't handle being near the body." I answered, it wasn't a complete lie. "I needed to breathe."  His eyes returned to mine, something flashing through his eyes. "I thought I taught you better than this." He shook his head as he scolded me. "It's dangerous to be away from me."  "I know. Sorry."  He placed his hand on my back and guided me forward, glancing around one last time before walking behind me. I wondered if he had heard any of Karter and I's conversation or had seen him, but based off his reaction he didn't.  I stood beside Achlys while Nicholas finished. I was unable to bring myself to look at the body, not liking the thoughts that came when I did. Nicholas walked over to me, glancing down at me.  "Come on." He said.  "What are we doing?" I asked as I fell into step beside him.  "Walking, what does it look like?"  I puffed out a breath of air and pursed my lips. "But why master Nico?"  "To survey the village for any witches or the perpetrator." He answered, glancing down at me.  I nodded my head, hoping Karter and his group had left already. If I was suspicious of them there was no doubt in my mind Nicholas would be too. We walked around the village in silence, both aware of the number of eyes watching us. It was eerily quiet, the only noise being the soft breeze brushing through the trees.  "This place seems dead." I mumbled softly. "A witch will do that."  I nodded my head numbly completely unaware of the extra set of eyes watching us.  I wasn't sure what I noticed first, the sound of someone running or the shadow in the corner of my eye but my world slowed when I whipped around. Karter charged at Nicholas, his eyes were blazing with an uncontrollable fury. The silver glint of the knife in his hands caught my eye and I gasped.  Everything happened so quickly but so agonisingly slowly.  The knife didn't make it anywhere near Nicholas, instead it fell to the ground. The deafening sound of the dagger hitting the cobble made my heart stop.  My wide eyes met his blue ones, the tears pooling in his eyes beginning to fall from the pain. My eyes trailed down to Nicholas's arm that was lodged into Karters chest. My lips fell apart, a scream aching in the back of my throat but nothing came out.  I stumbled forward, I wanted to run to him but the world around me was moving at a sedated pace and it seemed as if I had weights tied to my ankles.  "Go to them." He coughed out weakly, blood dripping down his chin. "You'll be safe." Nicholas silenced Karter as he pulled his hand from his chest, Karters heart in his hand. A strangled scream left my lips, my legs gave out and my body went crashing down in unison with his.  "Karter!"  The hate that was once in Karter's lifeless body had seeped into mine. I felt it surge through my veins, electrifying me within.  I crawled to his body, grabbing his hand and bringing it to my chest. His eyes were open wide, staring into mine.  And in that moment I saw all the pain, the grief, the utter brokenness. I saw the hope he carried for a happy future rid of the monsters that stole a child's happiness.  In his dull blue eyes, I saw Karter. ~~~Authors Note~~~ Sorry for the late publish, my hours at work have changed so I've had barely any time to write. I really wanted to do this chapter justice but I'm not sure if I managed. I had originally planned for this to happen when Faye first met Karter but thought it wouldn't quite work out in the timeline. Looking at the way things are going, I'd say there will likely be 100 or more chapters for this book. I never meant for it to get that long but I've got too many ideas for this book so I hope you all don't mind too much. Hope you enjoyed :)
