Chapter 6

2561 Words
Four days had already passed since I escaped what would have been my early demise, although there is no guarantee that I would live longer trying to survive by myself here. There was something that wouldn't settle inside of me, four days had passed and no vampires had entered the village in search of me. I thought at least Nicholas would've sent someone to kill me as punishment for escaping.  I never thought of myself as being lonely, my grandmother only passed four months ago so I hadn't been alone for long, but the more I think about it, the more I realise that my life was rather void of something now. Living in my grandmother's old cottage in the middle of the woods and being hated by the villagers, it is somewhat lonely. I kicked a few loose rocks along the path as I walked back to the village from the neighbouring villages theatre that I clean at. I usually clean at night but there was a performance today so I had to clean in the morning. It was a nice change to walk through the forests when it was day and light out, although I'm not afraid of the dark, regardless of what lays within it. Once I got to the main street of my village I saw a few women only years older than me, the minute their eyes landed on me, they whispered to each other before scuttling off. I pulled the black hood over my head and covered my pinned back hair, I was wearing my usual blue dress and my father's old coat he would wear when he left for 'jobs'. I would avoid people if I could, but today I had to go to the market and buy some vegetables to cook. I will just be as quick as I could, I wondered if the villagers had noticed my absence and were happy I was gone but now I returned like the dead. I walked along the road and stopped at the outside stall with all the vegetables, picking a few cheap ones and buying them. "Faye." I heard a voice behind me so I turned on my heel quickly. The voice was no where near similar to Nicholas's but I couldn't help my heart rate from picking up as the thought of Nicholas finding me zapped my mind. "Do I know you?" I asked the girl who called my name. She laughed softly before offering me her hand. "Sorry, you don't. My name is Greta." I warily took her hand and shook it. "How do you know my name?" I asked softly, my eyes were slightly narrowed. "Majority of the villagers know your name Faye. You do stand out after all." Greta's hair was raven black, it really stood out against her fair white skin. "I guess I do." I said softly.  Although she seemed nice, I didn't trust her. "I guess Nicholas didn't pay you a visit? I notice you're still alive." She mumbled so I didn't hear the first part but I managed to hear the last part. I started at her for a few minutes and only snapped out of my daze when she waved her hand in front of me. "What was that?" I raised my brows. Did she know I was taken by the watcher? And does she know that Nicholas purchased me? "Oh.." She shook her head and smiled slightly. "It was nothing." No, she's human so she surely wouldn't know about Nicholas. Surely I was just being paranoid. "Is there something you needed?" I asked her, glancing around at all of the people gathering in the markets. I wanted to leave before too many people gathered. "Not particularly." She followed my eyes and watched a few girls walk by as they stared at me warily. "Don't mind everyone, they are just scared of things that are different." She smiled. My eyes snapped back to hers. "You don't seem scared?" "Not much scares me. Besides, you may look unique but I don't see a reason to be afraid of you. Unless there is one." She lifted her left eyebrow.  Was there a reason to be afraid of me? Why couldn't I answer that question. "I should probably go now." I said softly. She looked like a gentle girl but I could tell that she seemed rather bold, she had that look about her, I had a feeling she would have argued with Nicholas if he took her instead of me. "I'll see you around Faye." She smiled and waved before I walked off. I offered her a small wave as I walked along the road towards the front of the village where the path to get to my grandmother's house is. I didn't know her very well, I don't think I had seen her much before either however she doesn't give off a bad vibe. She's mysterious, like Nicholas and I think she may be hiding something but she doesn't seem evil. She wasn't afraid nor worried about me, everyone treats me like some crazed old witch who will curse them if they got too close. I'm human, just like them, I just look a bit different and stay away from everyone else. Either that's because shes different too and not in a good way, or she's different in a good way. I'm not sure if I will ever find out, regardless of what shes like I'm not planning on making friends. If I form relationships with people, I'll have things too loose in the world. That's a risk I'm not willing to take. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Pa?" The small girl peaked around the corner quietly. She didn't see him so she slowly stepped out, grinning cheerfully, I won. I won! She thought. "Baaahhhh!" A hideous scream came from beside her, he jumped out with his arms in the air, his hands positioned like monster claws. She shrieked loudly and tried to run but it was a useless attempt, arms wrapped around her body. She was hoisted into the air and thrown around while the man continued to make monster noises. His hands on her small waist started to tickle her furiously, she let out a loud shriek before laughing continuously and soon the sound of his laugh resounded through the room. "That tickles Pa that tickles!" She giggled, her eyes shut tightly. "Good! I found you Faye." He roared playfully. "What are you two doing?" A beautiful woman with long blonde hair and big brown eyes stepped into the room. She watched adoringly at her husband and daughter playing together like they did most days. "Ma!" Faye smiled brightly at her mother. Her father stopped tickling Faye and held her in his arms against his chest. "Your back." He moved forward and kissed her forehead. There was relief in his voice as he spoke, relief that Faye was too young to notice. She knew life was hard for them, they were poor and living on the outskirts of a village but she never understood the world and how cruel it could be. For her mother to go to the village was a risk for them all and her father always worried that one day she may not return. They knew how dangerous the world was and they were saddened that Faye had to grow up in this world that was fuelled by the blood of the innocent. So they tried their best to keep Faye from harm whether that be physical or emotional. "Honey I need you too help with dinner." She smiled, walking off towards the small kitchen. "Okay. Faye go practice your writing and dad will play with you tomorrow again." He put Faye down and kissed her forehead. He loved his daughter more than anything and saw fit to make sure she learnt how to read and write, regardless of their status. Poor people don't often have reading or writing knowledge but he knew it was important for his daughter. Faye ran off to her room and took out the book her father had made for her when she saw a figure standing outside. At first she thought it was just a ghost, she saw them often and her mother taught her how to be brave when they're around and ignore them but after a while she noticed the the figure was a human. Then she heard the front door open, she knew at times like these she had to always stay hidden in her room but her curiosity got the better of her, it always did. Little did she know it would be worse in the future. She quietly walked out of her bedroom and hid behind the bookshelf in the common room, she could hear them speaking. The man's voice was rough as he spoke solemnly to her parents. "As you had expected Sir, the filthy vampires claimed his life." Even though Faye was young, she could feel the tension in the air after he spoke. Faye knew little about vampires, all she really knew was that they were vile creatures that loved to kill for a thrill. They hunt humans like her and ruthlessly ruin peoples lives, she swore to always stay away from vampires, she hated them already. "Oh dear, that's unfortunate. Will there be a funeral?" Her fathers voice was low and sad, whoever died was close to him and the death made his heart ache. "There will be Sir. At the Mirtangle cemetery, same place as usual." The man spoke again. Faye couldn't get a look at his face but she imagined an old man with a balding head and dark eyes. "We will be there." Her mother said softly. "What do we do now honey? Those vampires need to stop killing all of us." There was a sad sigh, Faye never knew who it actually came from. "I'll figure something out. They won't get away with this. Thank you." The man soon left so Faye ran off to her bedroom before her parents noticed. No one spoke during dinner and Faye went off to bed quietly, she knew not to question them at this time, they were clearly upset. She couldn't sleep that night but when her bedroom door opened she pretended to be. The bed dipped and her father gently stroked her head. "Faye in this world you have to be careful about forming relationships with others." He said sadly. "Why?" She wanted to ask but remained sleeping. But as if her father read her mind, he continued to speak. "Because If you form a relationship, then you'll have someone to loose and the pain of loosing someone is a pain that you'll never get rid off." She thought she understood her father, but she really didn't at least not then. Years later she did, and then years after that too. As if her father punished her for not truly understanding his words, now she knew the pain really never leaves. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What was that? The sudden blankness of my mind confused me. I swear I was thinking about something but as if I lost consciousness, my mind went blank and I can't remember anything. All I had was a strange feeling in my chest, one I had felt before but had never realised why I felt it. The feeling of my heart being squeezed and chest being compressed. It was a suffocating feeling that left me frowning, frowning and feeling sad. It wasn't a nice feeling. ——–——————–———————————–——————–———————————–——————–——————————— Third Person "Nicholas." The woman bowed her head ever so slightly. "Afternoon Greta." Nicholas spoke, his lips settled in a firm straight line. "What is it that you demand now?" She closed the door but not before scanning for villagers nearby. She never liked the villagers knowing Nicholas visited her, even though most did. She was shunned, just like the strange girl with white hair. She smiled at the though of Faye, she thought Nicholas would eat her up but Faye didn't appear to have a bite mark nor did she seem to know Nicholas. "Four days ago, a family was murdered. It appeared to be a rouge attack but at further inspection I noticed there was black magic involved." He clicked his tongue on the roof of his mouth. "I need you to tell me where I can find Jalien." Greta's eyes widened. Jalien was known by few because she was a witch that practiced dark magic. The council would usually collect witches like her and throw them in cells but Jalien had an agreement with Nicholas and a few other councilmen who hid her from the others in exchange of information. The problem with exchanging with a witch who was hiding from the council eye, was she moved location often and never let anyone know her whereabouts. They had to find her themselves. Greta is known by Nicholas as the locator. She was usually up to date with the locations of the people Nicholas sought after. "Jalien." She thought for a minute. "I think I know where she is but it's far." Greta explained the last known location that Jalien was spotted. She could tell that Nicholas was on edge about the situation, he hated witches she knew that but she couldn't help but wonder why that girl was still alive. "I saw Faye in town yesterday." Greta smiled at Nicholas. "Indeed?" Nicholas raised his brows slightly. He wasn't one bit surprised. "I thought you were going to pay her a visit." Greta had a certain look in her eye that Nicholas didn't overlook. "I did." He said. "However upon my arrival I noticed a blood patch on the wall and a lack of a girl." Greta raised her brows. "Then I later found her with the watcher, with a split head." "Oh dear. What happened after that?" "I purchased her." He had a smug grin playing on his face as he spoke about Faye as an object he owns. "Lord Nicholas." She tsked and shook her head slowly. "That poor girl." He simply narrowed his devilish eyes and ignored her comment. Poor girl indeed when he gets her back, he thought to himself. "How come she's back in the village then?" Greta had tried to keep a straight face but Nicholas had a keen eye and he picked up on the slight furrow of her brows as she tried to put the pieces together. "She escaped the almighty Lord Nicholas." "Oh I know." He found it quite troublesome really, having to capture that girl again, although that was an easy task, he shouldn't be chasing after her. If it was anyone else he would've ignored it or sent someone to execute her, but this girl with silver hair and icy white blue eyes was too interesting to just give up.
