Chapter 7

I woke up late, which was abnormal for me. My internal clock was always set to wake me when the birds woke.  I changed the dressing on my leg that was healing okay. I had made up an ointment with some of the herbs in the garden and in medicine box and it helped greatly. My grandmother could've been a doctor with the amount of knowledge of herbal remedies she had, I'm thankful she passed some of her knowledge down to me before she passed.  After I ate breakfast I started the day by weeding the garden and caring for the crops. They were my lifeline after all. Even with the cooling weather, the crops were all doing fine. When I thought back on it, our crops never wilted, regardless of the season. It was as if there was an invisible barrier keeping the plants safe from the changes of the weather.  I sighed contently when I was finished with the weeding. I lay back on the soft grass and let my body soak up the warmth of the sun, the energy of the earth seeping into my veins. I let my eyelids fall closed and my body relax against the ground. It had been a while since I was able to relax like this at home. The fear of being taken again never was a thought that never left my mind since the moment I jumped from the window at the Inn.  I hadn't done anything wrong, I hadn't sinned to deserve that fate, or had I? The world treated me as if I was some abominable criminal. My parents died at my feet, my grandmother passed away only months ago and I got kidnapped last week. I tried to shake my thoughts but something wasn't sitting right with me.  Just another day back living my usual life, so why did it feel like something was missing? The rest of the day went by in a blur, it was now late afternoon and the sun was starting to disappear creating a warm glow over the earth. I stared out the window, I should get water before the sun sets and it gets dark. I wasn't afraid of the dark but I was now afraid of being caught by a watcher again.  I grabbed my bucket and walked down to the creek. I dipped the bucket into the water and carried it back to the house, I had left the door open so I walked in. Before I could place the bucket down I heard a bone chilling voice. "Fancy seeing you here."  The bucket dropped from my hand, creating a loud bang and sending water droplets onto the bottom of my dress and feet. I stared into his eyes for a second before turning and making a dash outside. I unfortunately didn't get far before my back was slammed against the wall. I winced and opened my eyes only to connect with his bright evil eyes. His hands were on my shoulders, trapping me against the wall.  "You really didn't think you could escape from me, did you Faye?" He smirked playfully, but there was anger and irritation behind his eyes.  I gulped in fear, surely my life was over. "How did you find me?"   "Oh sweet innocent Faye, I've known where you've been the moment you ran through those dark woods." He teased, my eyes widened. He knew but he didn't come earlier. "I thought I'd let you think you were free for a while before I came to dish out your punishment. It's funner that way, well at least for me." He was just playing with me.  "How did you know where I was running to?" I asked, I'm going to die anyway so may as well drag it out by asking questions.  "When I first bought you from the watcher, I had come here to find you but the watcher had gotten you first." He spoke calmly.  "What? Why?" I asked.  "I was told that your grandmother knew a lot about herbs and grew them." He said. He dropped his hands that were on my shoulders and stepped backwards.  "Is that why you bought me?" I asked. He stared at me before looking around. "If it's just herb information you wanted then I'll give you the information if you let me go." I said hopefully.  I knew it wasn't wise to barter with a vampire, but my life was on the line. "Mm alright." He narrowed his eyes slightly. "Did your grandmother grow or ever talk about wolfsbane?" He asked.  "I don't think we ever grew it." I said slowly. "However she did mention it once or twice."  "What did she say?"  "Well she told me that if I ever got scared walking home after work, that I could take a herb called wolfsbane and it would protect me from the evil." Evil being Nicholas, I thought to myself.  "So she must've grown it." He said. He glanced around again. "Or she stored some." He walked into my grandmother's house. He took a moment to look at it, It was way different from his mansion. "Please don't break anything." I said softly. He started searching the cupboards but they were all empty.  "Where's your room?" He stopped and looked at me. I didn't answer so he strode towards me and grabbed my arm roughly. "Answer me."  "In there." I pointed to the door on the left wall and he opened it and stepped in. I followed him and watched him open the chest at the end of my bed, after searching through it he pulled out a small bag.  "Here it is." He smiled and turned to me. His smile became even more scary as he stared at me. "Well you got it, now you can leave me in peace?" I said hopefully but his eyes only narrowed.  "I purchased you for 500 cold coins, what makes you think I'll just let you go like that?" He asked. I gasped and stepped back.  "But you said.." "Here's a hot tip, vampires lie." He stepped towards me and grabbed my arm. "Time to go Faye." I started to pull away from him. "No! I don't want to go." I said as he dragged me behind him. I somehow managed to slip from his grasp and ran into my bedroom. My grandmother gave me needles that had something in them, I never knew what but she told me to keep some on me in case a vampire attacked me. I grabbed one and when I turned Nicholas was in front of me, I quickly stabbed his arm that was reaching for me and injected the contents. He scowled and looked down at his forearm.  "What is that Faye?" His jaw twitched with anger and I gulped in fear. He pulled the needle out, dropping it on the floor before he stood on it. The glass shattered easily. "What did you just inject me with?" He asked again, his hand grabbed my arm and squeezed. I winced in pain and closed my eyes.  "That's hurting." I whined quietly, I didn't expect him to stop but he did. "I don't know what it is, my grandmother gave them to me." I said softly as I opened my eyes.  "Give me the rest of them." He said, whatever it was it didn't seem to be affecting him. I turned around and grabbed the box that had 5 more and handed it to him. "Now let's go or I'll knock you out." "Wait wait!" I said quickly as he started to drag me out the room again. "Let me grab a few things of my parents and I'll willingly come." He turned and looked into my eyes. "Please, I promise." I said in an almost whisper.  "Hurry up." I dropped to the ground and pulled out a small wooden chest from beneath my bed. He eyed it and tried to reach for it but I pulled it away from him. "Open it so I know it isn't full of vampire killing weapons." He said sharply. I grabbed the key from underneath a potted plant on the windowsill and opened the chest. Inside of it was my mother's and fathers wedding ring, an opal necklace she made me and my fathers journal. There was also a small sketch my father drew of me and another one of all of us.  "There's nothing dangerous." I said. "Just my parents stuff." He examined each item before looking back at me. "Okay, hurry up." He headed outside so I followed. I whimpered as I took one last look at the cottage before it disappeared behind the trees. We continued down the path until we came to a carriage on the main street. The coachman quickly jumped down from his seat and opened the door for Nicholas. I reluctantly followed him in, clutching my parents items to my chest. "It somewhat hurts me that you think I'd be dumb enough to not know where you live and not even come after you." Nicholas said sarcastically when the carriage started moving. "Vampires don't have feelings." I whispered angrily.   "Ah don't we?" He chuckled. "And what makes you such an expert on vampire feelings?"  "You're monsters, monsters don't have feelings." I said while I glared at him, I couldn't help it. I was angry.  "Vampires emotions are actually more heightened than human emotions."  "Like what? All you vampires are good for is hatred and killing people."  "You're the one speaking with hatred." He said calmly. "We feel pain, sadness, happiness, joy, hate, anger and we feel love stronger than humans. Only towards special ones."  "Well I guess you're a special case then. I doubt you could ever love."  "Is that a challenge?" He smirked. "The moment vampires come to know love, they run the risk of carrying hate. Which is why we often turn into the emotionless monsters you see, because sometimes it's too hard to feel for us, so we don't." His tone turned serious and a chill swept over me.  "How do you stop your emotions?" I asked softly. My anger had simmered down and my curiousness had swept me up.  "Do you wish to?" His question took be back so I looked down to my hands.  Was that why I was asking? Do I want to stop feeling because all I feel is loneliness and pain, wouldn't life just be easier if it wasn't there?  "No." I said and looked back at him. "I think not feeling emotions would be similar to how I feel now, so it isn't worth it really." He stated into my eyes with some part of look of understanding.  Not having the chance to feel happiness and love, that is just a loneliness you can't shut off.  "Some vampires and other supernatural creatures can enter their minds and shut their emotions in a dark room and lock the door. You see, really how the mind works is it's all small rooms with doors. If you are strong minded enough, you can learn how to open and shut every door." He spoke with a certain blankness in his voice as he leaned back and held his lips in a firm line.  "Can you do that?" I asked.  "I can. A blessing maybe but sometimes I think its a curse." As he spoke it almost looked like his eyes clouded over, something changed in them that I wasn't even sure he was aware of.  "Can you go in others subconscious minds?" He stared at me long and hard before slowly shaking his head.  "Can you?"  "Obviously not, I'm human." I said. "Can all vampires control their mind like you?"  "No, not any that I know of at least. Some of us can do things others can't." He said, turning his head and directing his view outside. I did the same.  "Why do you think its a curse?"  There was a pause of silence as we both watched the trees go by in a blur. "It gets hard to shut doors I don't want to shut."  "Then don't." I turned back to face him and met his cold and distant eyes. This subject was affecting him somehow. "Sometimes, I don't have the choice."
