Chapter 4

2901 Words
A few days of being Nicholas's passed in the blink of an eye. He was often out on 'business' trips during the day and would return late at night after I was already asleep, only to leave just after I would wake. Not that I'm complaining about the lack of his presence.  So far I haven't been witness to his barbaric reputation, not that I've really had the chance to see it. Hes still evil, his presence alone makes fear rise and consume me. He locks me in the bedroom, hes too smart to leave it unlocked for me, but then again how am I suppose to escape a house of vampires? It's pretty unrealistic but I'm determined to return home nevertheless.  His butler, who also gives me the chills, brings me food every morning and afternoon, it isn't much but I'm not being starved at least.  Nicholas gave me a few books to read too, the majority are about witches or history books. Although i find it strange that he seems to want me to read witch books, I'm not against learning new things and they are all rather interesting. "Are you ready?" The door opened abruptly, giving me a small fright. I stood up and nodded my head. "Yes Master." Today Nicholas said that I had to go with him on one of his business trips. I'm not even sure what these so called business trips consist of, hopefully not my demise. He turned and walked out of the bedroom so I followed closely behind him. This was the first time I was let out of his bedroom in almost a week. We walked down into the courtyard and got into the horse drawn carriage that was waiting for us. When we got in and the carriage started moving, I asked a question I had been wondering. "What is your work Master?" I asked as I sat opposite him. "I work for the council." I slowly nodded, that explains why he was searching for information about the humans. "As you know I am a Lord but I am not the Lord. My father was the past Lord but he wanted me to take over but I detested, so a close friend of mine became the Lord. I do top secret missions for him often." He grinned. "Why are they secret?" I asked. I knew I asked too many questions for a slave, but so far he didn't seem to mind. "A lot of councilmen can't be trusted. Most get the job for the power it gives, the Lord and I prefer to keep a lot of what goes on to ourselves and a few of the trusted councilmen." "That way it's easier." I said, he nodded. "Exactly, what a smart pet you are." He grinned so I turned away and looked out the window. I didn't like being downgraded by being called a pet, I was an outcast in my village purely because i was different.  As the carriage carried us into a small village, some things started to look familiar. This village is only 15 minutes from mine, if I could slip away from Nicholas then I could make it back home. I walked to this village once when I had to sell some herbs for my gran. When the carriage finally stopped, we stepped outside and were met with three tall men, I could tell instantly that they were all vampires. I was instantly afraid and on edge being in the presence of more than one vampire, Nicholas was terrifying enough and now I have to deal with these three too.  "Lord Nicholas." The tallest one with blonde hair bowed his head at Nicholas before his eyes found me. "You brought company?" "Councilman Graham." Nicholas said. "She's my pet." I looked down as I felt all their sickening stares, I didn't feel human around them. I felt like the dirt beneath their finely polished shoes. "So what's the report so far?" He asked. "A rouge werewolf attack, there's four victims, all human." Councilman Graham spoke calmly, his face was blank and his voice was still. Vampires were really creepy creatures. "Shouldn't that be the werewolves issue?" Nicholas asked, his tone flat and bored. "Not quite Lord, there are no nearby werewolf packs residing. This falls under our territory so it is our issue. If it was a pack wolf it would be a different story." Graham said, I looked back up at the three vampires in front of me. Two were focused on Nicholas while the other one with black hair was staring at me. I stared into his dull red eyes, he wasn't any important vampire, other than being a councilman. The important vampires have bright eyes. He was making my palms sweat and my heart beat rise, he looked ready to pounce and vampires are unpredictable creatures. "Hugh, is there something wrong with your eyes?" Nicholas suddenly asked the vampire who was staring at me like I was a big tasty steak and technically to vampires, I am. "No Lord Nicholas. Just curious as to why you now have a pet." "That's none of your business. Let's get to work then." Nicholas walked off so I quickly followed him, not wanting to be near that vampire any longer. "I don't like him." I said without thinking. "That makes two of us." Nicholas turned to me and gave me a small smirk. "Make sure you stay by me, at all times." His tone became serious as we entered a small house. I looked around the house, at first glance everything appeared normal. Nothing was moved or broken, the house was almost spotless. From what I had heard from the village gossip, werewolves usually wreck everything in their sights when they attack. I followed Nicholas into the bedroom and I gasped at the sight. Sitting against the wall were four bodies, dead bodies, the way they were positioned made them look like dolls. There was an older woman and man and two teenagers. Staring at the lifeless bodies reminded me of the day I woke to find my parents dead. Nicholas crouched down and inspected the bodies. Their heads were all drooped down, chins to their chests. I watched as he placed his hand under the older woman's chin and lifted her head up. Her wide open eyes met mine and all I could see was my mother staring back at me. I felt paralysed in that moment, I couldn't do anything but stare in shock at the woman who turned into my mother. I felt like I was sitting in an oven, my skin was hot and sweaty and I could hear my heartbeat pounding loudly in my mind. Then somehow, over my loud heartbeat I heard a calm voice. "Faye." The woman was no longer my mother staring into my soul and now I could see Nicholas standing in front of me. "You're panicking." I looked up into his eyes before I looked back at the dead bodies. "I'm fine." I whispered, my heart was still beating faster than usual and my breathing was heavy. "Have you never seen dead bodies before?" He asked. "I have." I said numbly, my eyes returned to his. "What did you see Faye?" He asked, his gaze was intense and made me feel obligated to answer every question truthfully. "When my eyes met her dead ones, the woman was replaced by my mother. It paralysed me." I wanted to break my gaze and look back at the dead bodies but his was so demanding that I couldn't. "Maybe I will get you a ride home." I shook my head quickly. "No I am fine Master. You should get back to work." I said reassuringly. "I am fine now." I nodded. He studied me before answering. "Go search that book shelf and see if you find anything interesting." I looked to the left to see a small bookshelf, beside the double bed, that I hadn't noticed before. He walked back to the bodies so I walked to the book shelf. I was still stunned from earlier that I wasn't paying attention where I was stepping, so when I accidentally kicked something under the bed I jumped back. I stepped forward and started scanning the bookshelf, I wasn't even sure what I was looking for but Nicholas told me to look for anything peculiar. The dead bodies were the only things I could think of that looked peculiar in this room. I raised my hand up and dragged my fingers over the spines of the books. Nothing looked out of place until I looked at the top shelf. There was one single book missing, it appeared to be part of a series as the whole book case was sorted by series in alphabetical order. I looked around for the missing book, quickly remembering I had kicked something under the bed. I knelt down and looked under the bed, under the bed was indeed the missing book so I reached under and pulled it out. I stared at the cover, it was blank apart from the few blood spots on the top corner, did they die because of this book I wonder. "Come on. You'll wait by the carriage." I heard Nicholas behind me so I quickly stood and unconsciously tucked the book in my dress so he couldn't see it. There was something about this book, I needed to see what was inside it. "Are you done master?" I asked him as I followed him outside. "No. Unfortunately things haven't gone to plan." His face was still but his tone of voice had turned agitated. "Graham, there is a slight problem with this rouge attack." Nicholas' jaw twitched as we approached the three councilmen.  "What is it Lord Nicholas?" Councilman Graham stepped forward with his eyebrows furrowed slightly. Nicholas turned to me. "Go wait by the carriage. I won't be long." I nodded my head and walked off but before I did, I managed to hear what Nicholas said. "This isn't just a rouge attack, its a witch one." I stood at the carriage, watching Nicholas as his jaw twitched and his eyes hardened while he spoke to Graham. When they went inside I quickly slipped the book into the carriage. The horses were stomping their feet restlessly, i wondered how a prey animal was able to be around predators like vampires. I walked over to a patch of grass and picked some for the horses before walking back towards them. I gave them both a handful of grass and smiled. "You're very handsome." I ran my fingers down the nose of the dark bay horse. "Ah, I am aren't I." I gasped when I felt warm air on my neck but I didn't dare move. "I'm rather intrigued in you." As he spoke my heart raced and I felt a thin layer of sweat rise on my forehead. "Speak, I would like to hear your lovely voice. Speak." "Wh.. Do you need something Councilman?" I tried to speak calmly but my voice came out shaky. "Well yes, I need many things but right now, the better question is what I want." He grabbed my shoulder and spun me around to face him, my eyes widened as I stared into his dim red one's. "Now ask me what I want." I gulped as I stared into his hungry eyes. I knew what he wanted, the blood pumping in my veins. "You are very unique looking, but I bet you've been told that before. Tell me, is your mother as pretty as you?" "My mother was very pretty councilman." I tried my best to stay composed. "You do realise, I can hear your heart. I can smell your blood, would you like to know how your blood smells to us vampires?" He licked his lips and gave me a wicked smile. "It smells delightful." He placed his hand on the back of my neck and pulled me forward, I let out a small scream and clenched my eyes closed. I came to a sudden halt and after a silent second passed, I slowly opened my eyes. Nicholas was standing there with his hand tightly wrapped around the councilman's arm that was pulling me forward. "Nicholas, lovely for you to join us." Councilman Hugh snickered. "What do you think you are doing?" Nicholas asked as he stared down at the man that still had his hand around my neck. "Well not much. I was just getting to know your company here, pretty little thing isn't she? Have you tasted her yet? She smells lovely." Councilman Hugh looked back at me and gave me a lopsided grin, allowing one of his fangs to peak out. "She is indeed 'my' company, so why don't you get your dirty paws off 'my' company." Nicholas spoke calmly but even his blank expression gave off a very dangerous energy. "I could." I gasped slightly when I felt councilman Hugh's hand tighten on the back of my neck. "Or I could break her neck." "Then I'd have to break yours." Nicholas tightened his hand on councilman Hugh's arm and I heard a loud crack before he released me from his hold.  I took a deep breath and stumbled back against the carriage. "You're no fun Nicholas." Hugh narrowed his eyes on me but instead of looking away, I stared back at him. "Oh simply because we have different definitions of fun." Nicholas spoke sharply before he pushed me into the carriage. "Are we going back?" I asked as he took a seat in front of me. He shook his head and his eyes landed on the book next to him. "What is this?" "Oh." I stared at the book, the words suddenly lost from my mind. "I saw it in the bedroom." "So why is it here?" He raised a brow at me and I looked down. "I... Ah.." I fumbled around with the hem on my dress. "Well it has blood on it and I, uh, I just took it." He grabbed the book and looked at the blood stain before opening the book. "Have you opened the book?" He asked me, I shook my head so he looked at me with a blank expression. "It's empty." He flicked through the pages. "What?" After only 20 minutes the carriage pulled up to an Inn that was hidden behind some pines. "What are we doing here master?" I asked him as I looked around. The Inn looked old and run down, definitely the opposite I'd expect Nicholas to go to. "We will be staying here a few nights." He walked inside and behind the counter was a small old man who didn't notice he had customers. "Old man." Nicholas said loudly and knocked on the wooden desk. It sounded like it almost broke. "Oh hello." The old man looked up and gave a weak smile. "The best room you have." Nicholas pulled out a silk bag and chucked it to the old man. When the man opened the bag his eyes widened and a small smile crept on his face. "Of course my lord. Right this way." He lead us upstairs to the very end of the hallway. He unlocked the door and opened it before giving the key to Nicholas and scuttering off. We entered the room and I looked around. It was no where near the size of Nicholas's room but it was a decent size for an Inn. There was a double bed in the top middle of the room and a few bookshelves, a small table and a desk. Nicholas closed the door behind us and threw a bag, that I hadn't even realised he had, on the ground at the foot of the bed. "I need to head back, you stay here." He stared at me so I slowly nodded my head. He turned and opened the door, before he stepped out he stared at me. "Do not leave, unless you want to die." His voice gave me chills so I just stared at him. He slammed the door and I heard him lock me inside. I turned to the window to only find out that they're both bolted. I wasn't born into this world to become a pet to a vampire. I searched the room for any rope, not sure why there would be rope in an Inn bedroom but you never know right? When I couldn't find anything I sat on the bed and sighed. "This isn't fair! Lord have mercy on me, let me go home!" I said quietly and fell back on the bed. If my parents were alive, I wonder if I would still be in this situation? No, my father wouldn't of let that happen, he was very protective over me. I was his only child after all now I'm really the only child. No parents, no grandparents and no siblings, I'm alone in this wicked world now. I no longer have anyone to protect me, so I have to protect myself. I need to get back home now, otherwise I may as well admit defeat right now. I sat up and eyed the bag Nicholas dropped on the floor. Maybe there is something helpful in there? Lord have mercy on anyone who decides to challenge Lord Nicholas.
