Chapter 32

~ Song ~ Dance Till We Die - Dallas Thornton ~ I stared at myself in the reflection. The light purple dress clung to my waist but flowed out from my hips to the floor. The sleeves hung off my shoulders in loose frills, with a sweetheart neckline that was littered with delicate silver and black flowers. The flowers trailed down the bodice sparingly, ending on the top of the skirt. The dress illuminated my figure and features.  "Are you finished gawking at the dress yet?" Nicholas asked.  "Uh.. Yes." I mumbled as I walked back into his bedroom.  He studied me for a second before ushering me to sit at his desk. I did as I was told and noticed a few items, a hair brush and makeup. I furrowed my eyebrows, I couldn't do makeup.  "I will do it." Nicholas spoke from behind me as if he read my mind.  "You can do hair and makeup?" I asked.  Nicholas grunted. "I am a man of many talents Fairy." He picked the brush up and starting brushing my wild hair. "I had much practice of this before you were even born."  At his words, I wondered if he was referring to the unnamed women. Perhaps he use to do her hair and makeup for balls? I tried to rid the thoughts from my mind, focusing on my task at hand. While Nicholas brushed my hair, I worked on my mind. I made sure my shield was strong, well as strong as it could be.  I was nervous of meeting Nicholas's contact but capturing this witch could quite possibly be far more nerve wracking. At least I didn't need to bait his contact. I sighed, closing my eyes and slipping into my mind. I could still feel Nicholas's gentle hands as he worked on my hair but it was like I was out of the physical plane.  Witches, I hadn't seen too many of them. They were far greater at disguising as humans than vampires, seeming they were technically just humans with magic. Many humans feared them but their species were sparse and well hidden so they were never an overly active threat to us, vampires took the award for being the deadliest threat around.  The horror vampires brought with them often shadowed over any fear towards the witches but I had heard stories of people running into witches and barely escaping with their lives. Though I had never been witness to a catalyst caused by a witch, I knew they were powerfully deadly creatures but I believed they were better than vampires.  Witches were born from heaven, whilst vampires from hell. Surely that fact had to play a part in their nature but I knew over the years many witches that were left alive had turned evil to fight against the vampires that threatened their survival. I was praying there were still some good witches remaining, waiting in the shadows until they could lend their help.  "Done." Nicholas said, his voice pulling me back to reality.  I stared at the hand mirror that was held in front of me, my eyes widening. My hair was pinned back into a low bun, loose curls fell around my face. The bun was pinned loosely, creating an elegant yet slightly simple look. Nicholas moved the mirror around so I could see the black and silver flower pin in the bun, it matched the flowers on the dress.  I was pleasantly surprised at how the hair-do turned out.  "I'm pretty great right Fairy." Nicholas smirked behind me. I rolled my eyes. "Lets do your makeup."  He spun the chair around so I was now facing him, I stared up at him, wary of his smirk. He looked like a boy who was about to experiment and that made me worried. He grabbed my chin so I stilled as he started putting a light layer of power on my face, I closed my eyes and started coughing.  "You're getting it everywhere." I grumbled.  "Beauty is pain." Nicholas said in a high pitched tone.  After what seemed like hours of torture, Nicholas was finished and handed me the mirror. My face looked smoother and my eyelashes looked darker and longer. My eyebrows seemed tamed and tidy too, I looked older and more presentable.  "I look different." I murmured.  "Your features have simply been enhanced, not changed." Nicholas said as he stared into my eyes.  "My eyes." I said, staring into the mirror.  My light blue eyes appeared to be shining brightly, they popped out with my darkened eyelashes. Nicholas's flat lips slowly turned up into a smirk, but it wasn't his usual cheeky smirk. He turned and walked into his closet, coming out minutes later dressed in a black fitted dress coat and black pants, though he usually wore suits during the day, he looked more dapper.  He ran his fingers through his hair until it sat back neatly. He turned to me, smirking and showing off his pearly white fangs. He grabbed his guns on the bed, putting them in his coat before he stepped towards me. "Let's go Fairy."  I stood up from the chair, taking a deep breath and stepping to his side. We headed out, walking down the stairs proved difficult with heels. We were just about to step out the door when a voice called out from behind us.  "Nicholas?" It was Rosemary.  I instantly tensed, as his fiancee she should be the one attending the ball with him but because they need me, I had to.  "Rosemary." Nicholas turned to face her.  "Where are you going?" She questioned, I could feel her eyes boring into the back of my head so I slowly turned around and met her golden eyes.  "Work."  Her eyebrows furrowed as she studied me. "Dressed like that?"  "Yes"  I pursed my lips and shuffled uncomfortably, the tense air was threatening to suffocate me.  "I see." She finally removed her eyes from me and stared at Nicholas. "Have fun."  She gave both of us a small smile before walking away. I let out a breath I didn't realise I was holding in and felt my body go slack. Nicholas chuckled at my reaction and walked outside, I followed him to the carriage and climbed in with his help.  We sat in the carriage in silence, Nicholas sat watching the passing scenery nonchalantly like it was a normal day while I fumbled around with the fabric of my dress and the golden necklace Nicholas insisted I wore even though it didn't quite go with the dress. The nerves were definitely beginning to invade my personal space much to my dismay, I tried to keep them away but they were relentless.  "Breath." Nicholas said, his eyes now on mine. "If you pass out then there's no point in us going."  "Sorry." I murmured, taking a deep breath.  "Why were you so quick to say you could do this when clearly, your mind thinks otherwise?" He asked, raising his left brow.  I stared into his eyes for a few minutes, my mouth becoming dry. I licked my lips and glanced away.  "Because of those dead vampires." I said softly, my body shivering as I remembered everything that happened that day.  When silenced consumed us I glanced back at Nicholas. He was studying me with an unreadable expression. We stayed like that for a while, our eyes locked together until the carriage began to roll to a stop and bustling noise from outside filled our ears. I was first to look away, staring out the window at all the people climbing from their carriages in a variant of beautiful dresses and suits.  I gawked at the lights lining the driveway and the enormous building that the mass of noise was coming from. The carriage began moving again, rolling forward slowly until it stopped outside the grand double doors. The coachman opened the door and Nicholas climbed out, reaching out his hand towards me.  "Come on Fairy."  I placed my shaking hand in his and climbed out, my eyes wide in awe at our surroundings. I didn't realise how overwhelming this was going to be, in my mind I had expected something smaller.  "Oh Faye you look gorgeous!" I snapped my head to the side to see Clara rushing towards us with her signature smile.  She held onto her deep blue dress as she walked, her blonde hair was half pinned up, the rest laying in loose curls down her back. It was obvious she was wearing far more layers under her skirt to make the shape, I was feeling grateful my dress was fairly simple and flowed out itself.  A tall shadow came into view behind her, he walked elegantly as he followed the overly excited Clara. My eyes widened as he got closer, he gave off a very deadly and powerful air which had shivers running down my spine, causing my body to seize up.  "Relax." Nicholas said, staring down at me.  His voice was enough to make me snap out of it and turn to him, though my fear of the man was still very prominent, my attention was on Nicholas.  "You did a good job Nic." Clara smiled as her eyes ran from my head to my toes.  "I always do." He smirked. "Cason."  "Nic." I felt heavy eyes on me, making me shuffle uncomfortably. "It appears I am making your pet nervous."  "Of course you are Cason." Clara said. "Stop it."  I was thankful Clara was here and it wasn't just Nicholas and this Cason guy.  "Cason is the Lord of Affaraon." Nicholas said to me. "Hence the suffocating air around him."  My mouth formed an O as I nodded my head, still too afraid to look at Cason. Arthur was sure intimidating but not like Cason was, he was a whole other level of terrifying.  "Let's go inside then." Clara said, clapping her hands together.  She hooked her arm with Cason's, turning away from me so I could finally look up. Clara smiled up at him as they walked together, I was baffled how Clara could be like that with two people who could kill others from pure fear just by one look but then again she was a vampire just like them. Casons hair was as dark as the night sky, a statement against his pale skin. I felt Nicholas grab my arm, placing it in his as he lead me forward. I took a deep breath, there was no going back now. We were here and I had to be bait to try catch a witch that was seen as a big threat to the vampires.  "You know." Nicholas started. "Today is your lucky day Fairy." He smirked.  I glanced up at him with furrowed brows, I failed to see how. "How so?" "For the night, you are no longer my pet but my Fairy."  That wasn't that rewarding.  "Cason still called me your pet." I mumbled.  "Well that's Cason." He chuckled. "Everyone else will see you as my companion."  I didn't think being known as Nicholas's companion was an appealing thing either. I didn't want to be seen as anyone associated with him but I guess it was far too late for that now. He always seemed to make sure everyone knew exactly who I 'belonged' to.  My nerves flourished as we walked inside, the sheer amount of people was enough to frighten me but what made it worse was as we descended the stairs almost every pair of eyes in the room were on us. My hand tightened around Nicholas's arm, I wanted to look away from the hundreds of peering eyes but I couldn't. My heart was pounding erratically against my ribcage, a bomb of nerves waiting to explode.  "Relax Fairy." Nicholas chuckled. "They'll find something else to gawk at soon."  "Why are they staring?" I asked, my bottom lip shaking uncontrollably.  "For many reasons." The tone of his voice changed, it was barely noticable and despite the fear stricken state I was in, I noticed it.  I turned and looked up at him, he had a sour expression as his eyes glided over the crowds.  "And they are?" I asked.  "Well for one, I haven't attended a ball in over half a century." He said, his eyes snapping to mine. "And the few balls I attended after sh.. Lets just say my behaviour wasn't exactly described as acceptable."  He pressed his lips together, his eyes hardening as he turned away. I frowned at his expression, he was going to mention that woman again but he stopped himself. I wondered why. "Is your behaviour ever actually acceptable?" I asked rather than asking the questions I wanted to.  I doubted I'd get the answers I wanted tonight, being at the ball seemed to put Nicholas on edge. Something happened at a ball he attended, whether that was before that woman left or after and I don't think Nicholas wanted to relive that or those moments.  I watched as a smirk slowly found its way on his face again, but it wasn't completely natural. "Well now, that depends my Fairy."  "On what?" I asked. "On who the judge is of what's 'acceptable'." He glanced down at me, his left fang peeking out from his lips.  I shook my head, a smile wanting to form on my lips. I wasn't sure when we had gotten to the ground floor, I was sure we were just on the steps moments ago but the nerves I had before were far less consuming than they were only minutes ago. Nicholas was once again a form of distraction from my fears, with his nonsense words I am able to abandon my inwardly battle and be brought back to myself. Despite how evil he was, he served good for some things.  As Nicholas had said, many of the peering eyes were gone but there were still some vampires in the room that seemed far more interested in watching Nicholas and I than minding their own business. I noticed a fair amount were ladies who stared at me with envious eyes, wanting to be in my position. They could take it for all I cared, I would give it away without a fight. I felt Nicholas's hand slide down to mine, pulling my attention to him. I furrowed my brows at him as he started pulling me in one direction.  "Where are we going?" I asked, if it wasn't for his supernatural hearing my words would've been drowned out by all the noise and music.  "Have you danced with a man before?" Nicholas asked rather than answering me.  I shook my head. "Just my father." But that was years ago.  He came to a sudden stop, making me slam into his back. When I stumbled back I could see people dancing around us with grins on their faces. It was hard to tell who were vampires and who weren't many looked the same and acted the same, they all danced happily. Seeing them like this made me wonder how they were so evil. "Good." He smirked. "Just relax, I'll guide you."  I took a deep breath and stared into his eyes. He moved his hand so it was intertwined with mine, his other hand sliding on my waist, making me suck in a sudden breath. I didn't like how close we were, or where his hand was and he knew that. He seemed to relish in making me uncomfortable. He started to move, gently pulling me along with him so my body mirrored his movements. I watched everyone else dance and move, my eyes fluttering from person to person. There was so much around us, so much noise and movement it was overwhelming me.  "Focus on me." Nicholas said, bringing back my wandering eyes. "It's rude to ignore your partner."  I rolled my eyes. "Shouldn't we be looking out for the witch." I asked just before Nicholas twirled me.  "Let them come to us." He said. "We can have some fun in the meantime. We have to blend in afterall." His smirk was compelling, drawing me in and consuming me.  The music wasn't particularly slow, neither was it fast. It was the perfect speed for the liveliness and enthusiasm that it created, while keeping the dance intimate and harmonious at the same time. Nicholas grinned widely like a child as he guided me along, he was a good dancer, I'd give him that.  Dancing alongside all these vampires made me realise how human they could be, so much so I forgot I was in a room full of creatures that could promptly end my life. I was dancing with one of the most diabolical vampires there was, yet I wasn't miserable instead it was almost as if I was enjoying it. Despite how chained down I was by Nicholas, sometimes I almost felt free when I was with him having adrenaline pumping near death experiences and dancing like nothing else mattered.  Though we were on a job, at the time there was nothing to do but dance. So for those few moments I let myself forget my worries as if they never existed. My mind stilled all its busy thoughts and I stopped being so consumed by it, I let my soul be careless and dance.
