Chapter 33

~ Song For This Chapter ~ Ruelle - Bad Dream. ~ I was huffing out of breath as I leaned against the wall, Nicholas was as composed as usual, even though we just danced to four songs in a row he was completely fine. I however, was not. My lungs burned as I sucked in the cool air and my legs were beginning to feel numb, I hadn't moved like that in a while. "We need to get you fit." Nicholas said, smirking down at me.  "What's going on here?" Clara said as she made her way over, Cason trailing behind her.  It was somewhat amusing to see such a terrifying guy following Clara everywhere, she seemed to have almost complete control of him.  "Danced too much." I breathed out.  She smiled widely and shook her head softly, glancing up at Nicholas who shrugged nonchalantly with his smirk still in place. I could feel Cason's eyes on me but I refused to look up, too afraid of what I might see.  "Has anyone seen a suspicious figure?" Cason asked, his voice deep and guttural.  "Sure." Nicholas said nonchalantly. "But none of them are witches."  "Have you felt anything?"  It took me a minute to realise he was talking to me, I felt my body go rigid before I slowly shook my head. I had been far to distracted by Nicholas to notice if there was a witch around or if it was trying to enter my mind. I wasn't even sure if I would be able to notice if they did enter my mind, Claras power was one thing but as she had said before, vampire powers are far different and limited compared to a witches mind magic.  I suddenly snapped my head up and looked at Clara, a smirk grew on her lips at my response to her trying to connect to my mind.  "What are you doing?" I asked.  "You were doubting yourself." She said, stepping forward and grabbing my hand. "I just wanted to remind you how good and quick you've gotten."  Her smile was reassuring but it didn't diminish my nerves.  "If you feel a connection place your hand on my arm, if you sense a direction then tell me." Nicholas said. "If you sense anything else, anything bad then squeeze my arm. Got that Fairy?"  I nodded my head, staring into his eyes. His smirk was gone, replaced by a serious expression, reminding me just how dangerous this could be. I took a deep breath and pushed myself off the wall, waking my numb limbs.  "Based on the reports, each murder took place between ten and midnight, then they had vanished without a trace." Cason said.  "Its quarter to ten." Nicholas said, grabbing out a pocket watch I had never seen before.  "Now is the time they'll be walking around looking for a target, so now is the time to get hunting."  Nicholas grinned at Casons words. "My favourite part."  "Keep your mind open pet, we have one chance to catch them. If they know we are onto them, they'll go into hiding." I cringed at the name Cason called me but nodded my head, biting my lip to suppress my nerves.  "Her names Faye." Clara said, crossing her arms over her chest and giving Cason an unamused look.  "Right." He said in an indifferent tone. "We'll split up. Now let's get to work."  Clara gave me an apologetic smile for Casons behaviour but I shrugged it off. I was a 'pet' now, I knew I would be treated like that, it was inevitable. Despite Claras kindness the vampires treated us mere humans that way. They walked off together, Clara seemed to be reprimanding him to which he seemed to be ignoring.  Nicholas linked my arm with his, pulling my attention to him. He gave me a sly smirk before we started walking around. I took a deep breath, trying to shove away the approaching nerves but it didn't work at the least. They were advancing fast and I knew soon enough they would consume me and drown me in my own mind.  "Purple suits you." Nicholas suddenly said, snapping me out of it and making me glance into his red eyes.  I furrowed my brows, was that a compliment? From him? He chuckled at my expression as if he knew what I was saying.  "Do you know what the colour purple signifies?" He asked.  "Wealth, royalty and wisdom." I murmured, glancing around at all the vampires.  "Well yes it does but it has a deeper meaning."  "Enlighten me."  "Purple is the perfect mix of calm stability of blue and fierce energy of red. It is a colour of mystery, independence and often seen as the staple of magic." I stared up at him as his hawk like eyes scanned over the crowds. "It is a colour of power, great power but the most interesting thing I find about purple is how it is associated with death."  My eyebrows furrowed, I was unsure of where he was going with it but it stirred something inside of me. His eyes returned to mine, boring into my soul in an attempt to know my secrets.  "What are you trying to say?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.  He smirked. "Oh nothing really, just simply how well it suits you."  I wanted to pry more, to ask until he spoke his real thoughts but that was quickly halted when I felt my body tense as an uneasy feeling washed over me. A cool chill shot through my body slowly, leaving the feel of icy shards over my skin. Nicholas noticed my demeanor immediately and stopped.  "What is it?" He asked, studying my expression.  "I don't know."  I didn't know what was happening. My body was reacting to something but I couldn't feel anyone attempting to enter my mind. I glanced around, trying to spot anything or anyone that might have caused the reaction but could see nothing. The chills didn't stop and only prompted my heart to beat faster, my breathing becoming uneven. This reaction almost seemed familiar somehow.  "Is it the witch?" He asked.  "I.. I don't know." The words stumbled from my shaking lip.  Nicholas growled out lowly, running his hand through his hair as his eyes darted around the room. "Clara and Cason are coming." He said as he grabbed my arm and pulled me forward with him.  I nodded my head and walked beside him, I was trying to keep my mind open but with the feeling I was getting I could feel my mind trying to close up, to shield itself and retreat. I looked around while we walked, searching for any figure that could be the witch. Many vampires here had either bright red eyes, dim red eyes or coloured eyes like Claras, not to mention there were humans here too so trying to pick out a witch in here was like looking for a needle in a pile of needles.  Clara and Cason had found us quickly, I had no idea how but I didn't have time to worry about that while I was fighting off the chills.  "Have you found the witch?" Cason asked.  "Not exactly." Nicholas said, a scowl covering his face.  "Then what?" He asked impatiently.  The chills intensified, making my hands shake by my side. It was getting worse and I had no idea how to stop it, nor did I have any idea why it started. My whole body was consumed in coldness, it had wrapped around me and begun to smother me.  "Faye?" Came Claras soft voice. "Are you alright?"  I nodded my head numbly, biting my lip to try stop it from shaking. I took a deep breath in an attempt to steady my breathing but it seemed my body was not in the mood to work with me. My mind felt heavy, a dull headache beginning to appear. My hand went up to my temple, massaging it softly to try make the pain go away however much like everything else, it didn't work.  I could hear them talking, could hear the music playing and the laughs from everyone yet the noises seemed so far away. It felt like I was being pulled away but physically I was still there, almost as if I was dreaming. My heart was beating loudly in my ear and I could hear my uneven breaths, earlier I could barely hear Nicholas speak over the noise. Something was wrong.  I turned around, my eyes frantically searching the crowds until my body stilled. My eyes landed on a man standing in the corner of the room, he appeared like any normal human, brown hair and green eyes. He smiled at people passing by, his eyes attentively scanning each person as he looked over the crowd as if he was looking for something in particular, or rather someone.  My body felt frozen, the fear brought on by the chills paralysing me. I wanted to scream out for help, to be knocked out of this trance but I couldn't. The flight instinct in me wanted to kick in but it was overpowered by the plague of fear, I wanted to run but there was nowhere for me to go. I was trapped in a room full of vampires and I could barely feel their presences around me. It was as if they weren't even there, it was just me and him. It was a nightmare. The dull aching in my head was getting harsher the longer I stared at him. I closed my eyes, wincing in pain as I ran my hands over my eyes. When I opened my eyes I almost gasped, I wasn't sure if it was purely because I was exhausted or from the headache but I had a feeling it was something else all together. I stared at what appeared to be smoke or a thin fog that danced around me, it glinted against the moonlight peeking through the grand windows.  My eyes followed the fog as it led from me directly to the man standing in the corner. I narrowed my eyes on it, looking closer it was almost as if something was flowing through it. Was this the chill wrapped around me? It was because of that man.  "Faye?" I gasped as I felt someone grab my arm.  I turned sharply and stared with wide eyes at Nicholas. I glanced down and furrowed my brows when I saw that the fog was no longer around me, had I been seeing things?  "Faye? What is it?" Nicholas asked, grabbing my chin and forcing me to stare into his consuming eyes.  The chills still engulfed me, willing my body to turn once again to the man. It was like my body was being pulled towards him, I had felt this before. This feeling that sent an alarm off in my mind, the intense chill from one thing and one thing only. Evil.  "Him." I said, turning my head to the side and staring at the man, my hand unconsciously squeezing onto his arm tightly.  Nicholas followed my line of sight, his eyes studying the man before returning to mine. "Are you sure?"  The question felt heavy and I began to second guess myself. Though my body was being pulled in that direction like it was screaming the answer, I couldn't help but wonder if I was wrong. All I had to go off was an uneasy feeling and grey fog that was no longer here, based off their reactions they hadn't seen the fog so perhaps I was hallucinating it all due to my headache. But I couldn't shake the feeling so I nodded my head. "Yes. I think."  His eyes narrowed on mine, delving into the depths of my crystal blue eyes in search for the answers he wouldn't find.  "Has he connected to your mind?" He asked. "Did you sense a connection leading to him?"  I felt myself begin to shrink with the three pairs of eyes staring down at me with tremendous pressure. I doubted they'd believe me if I said that 'connection' was fog that I could no longer see or the chills that pulled me towards him.  "Well... yes but no.." I winced as I spoke, my voice shaking.  "Nic we can't go off you pets supposition." Cason growled out frustratedly. "We need to know for sure he is the witch before we can make our move."  Nicholas promptly silenced Cason with one hard look, grabbing my shoulders and shifting so he was standing in front of me, blocking me from everyone else and pulling my attention to only him. His hands on my shoulders surprisingly provided a small amount of warmth on my icy skin, slowly prying me away from the seize it had on me.  "Why do you think it is him Fairy?" He asked, his tone authoritative, his eyes silently persuading the truth from me.   There was concentrated heat on my chest I hadn't noticed before. I raised my hand up and wrapped it around the golden pendant that seemed to be emitting heat. As if it gave me the confidence to speak, the words even I thought were insane fell from my shaking lips.  "I can feel it." I said barely above a whisper. "The evil. The same I felt from that vampire."  I heard Cason sigh impatiently making me anxious, I chewed on my lip as I searched for anything that would put me at ease in Nicholas's eyes. Cason didn't care what I said I 'felt' from the man nor did he believe me and I wasn't sure if Nicholas would.  "Nicholas." Cason said in a low grating voice, his patience about to snap.  "It's him."  Nicholas's tone was unyielding like he was certain it was that man purely based off what I told him. He believed me. Nicholas left no room for Cason to argue as he turned and started making a plan. I wasn't sure when the chills had began to retreat, letting me free from its grasp as my body was slowly washed with warmth. I could still feel warmth radiating from my shoulders where Nicholas's hands were.  I took a steady breath, my eyes returning to the witch. I had well and truly fallen into a world I wanted no part of. All the evil and darkness was devouring me beyond belief. Though these monsters existed regardless, I was never apart of the mess they made. I was drowning slowly and wasn't sure if I was ever going to get a chance to breathe again or if I even wanted to.
