The cold wind whipped through the narrow, dirt alleyways as Elena ran like a mother hunted by predators.
Her legs burned, and her chest heaved violently with every ragged breath, but her arms remained locked around Jaxon, holding him tight against her trembling heart. Mud splashed against her skirts as she darted past abandoned wooden crates, turning blindly through the maze-like streets of the border town.
"Mommy... why are we running?" Jaxon asked, his voice muffled against her neck. He wasn't crying, but his tiny fingers clutched her clothes with an unusual tightness. "Is that tall man a bad guy?"
Tears blurred Elena's vision. "He's... he's dangerous, Jax. We have to leave. We have to go right now!"
He knows, Elena thought, panic clawing at her throat like a wild beast. Max saw his face. He saw his eyes.
For five years, she had built a quiet, peaceful life out of the ashes of her destruction. She had accepted being rejected, forgotten, and banished. But she would never, ever let Max take her son. Jaxon was her entire world—the light that had kept her alive when the cold night almost consumed her.
Behind them, a sharp, terrifying howl shattered the sky, echoing off the stone buildings.
Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. The Bloodmoon trackers were on their trail. Max hadn't wasted a single second.
"Find them!" a deep, commanding voice roared from the main square, vibrating with enough raw Alpha energy to shake the very ground beneath her feet. "Do not harm them! Bring my son and his mother back to me unharmed, or I will tear this town apart!"
"Faster, Elena, faster..." she whispered to herself, forcing her exhausted muscles to move.
She burst out of the alleyways and plunged directly into the dense, dark thicket of the border forest. The towering pine trees swallowed the sunlight, surrounding them in shadows and damp earth. Elena knew these woods better than anyone. She sped toward a hidden ravine where a cold river flowed fast—a place where she could wash away their scent and disappear forever.
Tree branches whipped against her face, leaving thin red scratches on her pale cheeks, but she didn't slow down.
Suddenly, a heavy rustle tore through the bushes above her.
CRASH!
A massive, jet-black wolf leaped down from a high rocky ledge, landing with a loud thud directly on the path ahead, blocking her route. The beast was as large as a small horse, its dark fur slick with rain, and its golden eyes gleaming with lethal discipline.
It was Commander Caleb—Max’s most trusted warrior.
Elena skidded to a halt, staggering backward as her heels caught on a tree root. She pressed Jaxon behind her back, her breath hitching in pure terror.
"Elena..." Caleb’s wolf voice echoed telepathically, carrying a mixture of shock and stern authority. "Stop running. You cannot outrun the pack. Yield peacefully."
"Get away from us, Caleb!" Elena screamed, picking up a heavy, jagged rock from the ground, her knuckles turning white. "If you take another step, I swear to the Goddess, I will fight you!"
Caleb took a slow, heavy step forward, his giant paws crushing dry twigs. "The Alpha King has ordered your return. He knows about the boy, Elena. There is nowhere on this continent you can hide from Alpha Max."
Jaxon stepped out from behind his mother, his tiny face contorted in anger. He held his wooden sword high, ignoring the immense difference in size between him and the massive wolf.
"Leave my mommy alone, big puppy!" Jaxon yelled fearlessly, his little voice ringing with a unnatural, booming tone.
Suddenly, a strange, overwhelming energy flared around the five-year-old boy. Jaxon’s icy blue eyes lit up with a bright, supernatural glow. The air around them grew heavy, radiating a small but unmistakably dominant pressure that hit Caleb like a physical wall.
Caleb’s massive wolf ears pinned back in absolute astonishment. He took an involuntary step backward, bowing his head slightly under the sudden, innate authority leaking from the child.
An Alpha's aura... in a child so young? Caleb thought, his wolf mind reeling in shock.
"Jaxon, no!" Elena gasped, grabbing her son and pulling him back into her arms, horrified that his powers were manifesting in front of a Bloodmoon warrior.
Taking advantage of Caleb’s hesitation, Elena threw the heavy rock straight at the wolf’s snout, turned around, and scrambled down the steep slope leading toward the roaring river.
"Mommy, look out!" Jaxon shrieked.
A dark shadow dropped from the trees above, landing with terrifying grace right in front of her.
The air turned freezing cold instantly. The oppressive, suffocating pressure returned, tenfold stronger than before, crushing the breath right out of Elena’s lungs.
Elena collapsed onto her knees in the damp pine needles, completely paralyzed by the sheer force of the royal command.
Slowly, she lifted her terrified eyes.
Standing before her, his black leather coat swaying gently in the woodland breeze, was Alpha Max. His broad chest rose and fell heavily, his dark hair messy, and his icy blue eyes locked onto her with a terrifying storm of conflicting emotions—rage, shock, disbelief, and a deep, agonizing desperation.
Behind him, several elite warriors emerged from the trees, surrounding the area completely. Escape was impossible.
Max stepped forward, his heavy boots sinking into the wet soil. He ignored the warriors, ignored the forest, ignored everything around them. His eyes were glued to the pale, beautiful face of the woman he had banished five years ago.
"Elena," Max whispered, his voice dangerously low, rough with unspoken grief. He slowly crouched down in front of her, his gaze shifting to the young boy trembling—not in fear, but in rage—in her arms.
"Max... please," Elena choked out, her tears falling fast onto Jaxon's hair. "Please don't do this. You rejected me. You threw us away. Just let us go..."
Max reached out his hand, his long fingers hovering just inches from Jaxon’s cheek. His heart hammered in his chest like a frantic prisoner.
"I banished a weak, wolfless female," Max said softly, his icy eyes flickering with an unreadable flame as he stared into his son's glowing blue eyes. "I never banished my son. And I certainly never gave you permission to raise the heir of the Bloodmoon Pack in the dirt."
Max's gaze rose to meet Elena's, turning sharp and cold as steel.
"You are coming home, Elena. Both of you."
