The deafening cheers of the ballroom faded into a distant echo as the heavy oak doors of the royal suite clicked shut behind them.
Inside, the room was quiet, lit only by the soft, flickering embers of the fireplace.
Jaxon was already sound asleep in Elena’s arms, utterly exhausted from the evening's excitement. His small head rested against her shoulder, his chest rising and falling in a rhythmic, peaceful cadence.
Elena gently laid him onto the massive plush bed, pulling the warm velvet blanket up to his chin. She lingered for a moment, brushing a lock of dark hair from his forehead, her heart still hammering wildly against her ribs from everything that had transpired downstairs.
She could still feel the crushing weight of Max’s hand on her waist. She could still hear his booming voice declaring to the entire continent that she and Jaxon were under his absolute protection.
Why did he do that? Elena thought, her fingers trembling slightly. Five years ago, he threw me away without a second thought. Why is he standing in front of me like an impenetrable shield now?
"He sleeps like a warrior," a deep, quiet voice rumbled behind her.
Elena stiffened, her body instantly going taut. She turned around slowly to face Max.
He had removed his suit jacket, unbuttoning the top few buttons of his black dress shirt and rolling his sleeves up to his elbows. He stood near the marble fireplace, a glass of dark amber whiskey in his hand. Under the dim, golden light of the fire, his broad frame looked imposing, yet his icy blue eyes were soft as he gazed at her.
"Thank you," Elena whispered, her voice barely louder than the crackle of the wood. "For crushing the blade. For... protecting Jaxon from Elder Richard."
Max took a slow, deliberate step toward her, placing his glass onto the wooden side table. "You don't need to thank me for protecting my own family, Elena. I should have done it five years ago."
A sudden, suffocating wave of heat washed through the room.
Elena took an instinctual step backward until her calves hit the side of the bed. Even though the golden thread of their mate bond had been shattered years ago, standing this close to Max in the quiet darkness was triggering a phantom electricity beneath her skin. Her heart raced, her breath catching in her throat as his familiar, intoxicating scent of pine and dark oak wrapped around her senses.
"Don't do that, Max," Elena murmured, lowering her gaze to avoid his intense eyes. "Don't act like a hero now. It doesn't undo the past."
"I know it doesn't," Max said softly, stopping just a foot away from her. His presence was overwhelming, yet he moved with incredible care, as if terrified of scaring her away. "I know I ruined everything. I know I broke your heart and left you to bleed in the cold. I don't expect you to forgive me today, or tomorrow, or even a year from now."
Max slowly reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look directly into his eyes.
The touch sent a violent jolt of electricity straight down Elena's spine. She gasped softly, her lips parting, her dark eyes wide with a mixture of fear and irresistible pulling attraction.
"Max..." she breathed out, her hands coming up to press against his broad chest to push him away—yet her fingers lingered on the warm fabric of his shirt instead.
"I see the way you look at me, Elena," Max rasped out, his voice dropping into a low, possessive rumble that vibrated against her palms. "You hate me. You distrust me. But your body still remembers mine. The bond might be broken, but the Goddess didn't erase what we were."
"Stop," Elena choked out, tears finally welling up in her eyes as she fought against the dangerous warmth spreading through her veins. "You rejected me! You told me I was useless! I spent five years learning to live without you, Max. I won't let you drag me back into your world just because you feel guilty!"
Max’s eyes darkened with an agonizing mix of pain and desperate resolve. He didn't pull back. Instead, he leaned down slightly, his warm breath fanning against her lips, close enough that she could feel the intense heat radiating from him.
"It isn't guilt, Elena," Max whispered fiercely, his hand shifting from her chin to cradle the side of her neck, his thumb softly tracing her jawline. "It has never been guilt. I was a fool who listened to the council instead of my own heart. But I am not letting you go again. You can fight me, you can push me away, but as long as I draw breath, no one in this world will ever harm you or Jaxon again."
Elena stared up at him, her chest heaving, completely paralyzed by the sheer intensity in his eyes. For a terrifying second, she wanted nothing more than to lean in, to surrender to the phantom warmth of the bond she had missed for five long years.
No, her mind screamed. You cannot trust him. A King's promise is written in sand.
With a sharp intake of breath, Elena gathered all her strength and pushed hard against his chest, stepping sideways out of his reach.
Max let his hand fall, a heavy, silent sigh escaping his lips, though he didn't pursue her further. He stood tall, respecting the distance she had created, his gaze remaining locked onto her pale, flushed face.
"Get some rest, Elena," Max said softly, his voice rough with unspoken emotions. "Tomorrow, the elders will officially acknowledge Jaxon as the crown prince. The pack belongs to him now."
Elena smoothed down her silk gown, her breathing gradually slowing as she kept her distance near the balcony doors. "And what about Lady Freya and Elder Richard? They won't just accept this defeat, Max. You humiliated them tonight."
Max’s expression instantly turned cold as iron, his icy eyes flickering with lethal authority.
"Elder Richard has been stripped of his position on the council," Max replied coldly. "And Freya will remain under house arrest until I decide her fate. If either of them moves a single finger against you or my son... they won't live to see the next sunrise."
Max turned toward the heavy suite doors. He paused at the threshold, looking back over his shoulder at her one last time.
"Lock the doors from the inside," Max instructed softly. "My royal guards are posted outside, but I want you to feel safe."
Without waiting for her reply, Max stepped out into the dark hallway, the heavy oak doors locking with a firm, resounding click.
Elena stood alone in the dim firelight, her hand resting over her racing heart. She looked over at the sleeping form of her son, and then back at the closed door, a cold shiver running down her spine.
She knew Max was strong. She knew he was the most powerful Alpha King on the continent. But deep in her gut, a dark, instinctual feeling warned her that the shadows hiding inside the Bloodmoon Castle were far deeper and more dangerous than Max realized.
