The morning sun rose high above the mist-covered pine forests of the Bloodmoon territory, painting the castle's tall stone towers in pale silver light.
Inside the main dining hall of the royal suite, a lavish spread of fresh fruit, warm pastries, and steaming tea had been prepared.
Jaxon sat at the long mahogany table, wearing his comfortable everyday clothes. He was currently holding a half-eaten blueberry muffin in one hand, while his electric blue eyes were narrowed into a fierce, calculating stare at the giant man sitting directly across from him.
Max sat calmly at the head of the table, wearing a crisp dark shirt. He cut a piece of steak on his silver plate, completely unbothered by his son’s intense glare.
"Why are you eating breakfast with us again, big guy?" Jaxon asked bluntly, pointing his muffin at Max. "Mommy said bad guys who crush silver blades don't get free pancakes."
Elena, who was pouring tea beside the table, choked slightly on her breath, quickly setting the teapot down before she spilled it. "Jaxon... honey, mind your manners."
Max paused, lowering his fork. A rare, faint smirk twitched at the corner of his sharp lips as he looked at the bold five-year-old.
"I crushed the blade to protect you and your mother, little one," Max replied smoothly, his deep voice filled with quiet amusements. "In my book, that makes me a bodyguard, not a bad guy. And bodyguards get pancakes."
Jaxon crossed his small arms over his chest, humming thoughtfully. "Hmm... a bodyguard? But Big Uncle Caleb is already our bodyguard. He gave me a wooden shield this morning!"
"Caleb works for me," Max countered calmly, leaning forward on the table. "Which means I am the boss of your bodyguard."
Jaxon blinked, his small brow furrowing as he tried to process the hierarchy. He looked over at Elena for help, but Elena merely shook her head softly, pulling a chair out beside Jaxon and taking a seat.
"Don't listen to him, Jax," Elena said quietly, giving Max a cold, distant look. "We aren't staying here long enough for anyone to be our bodyguard."
The faint smirk on Max’s face vanished instantly. His icy blue eyes locked onto Elena’s face, his dominant presence instantly heavying the air in the room.
"You are not leaving, Elena," Max said softly, his tone low but carrying an unyielding, absolute firmness. "The council officially recognized Jaxon as Crown Prince this morning. His training and education as the heir begin under my watch."
Elena’s knuckles turned white as she squeezed her teacup. "He is five years old, Max! He doesn't need political training, he needs a peaceful home away from snakes like Elder Richard and Freya!"
"And where would he be safer than under the protection of the entire Bloodmoon army?" Max challenged, stepping into her space with his intense gaze. "Out in the wild border towns? Where rogue trackers can find him?"
Before Elena could snap back, a heavy, urgent knock shattered the tension in the room.
The double doors swung open, and Commander Caleb stepped into the dining hall. His face was unusually pale, his dark eyes wide with gravity as he bowed deeply to Max.
"My Lord," Caleb reported, his voice dropping to a tense whisper. "We have a situation in the west wing."
Max’s posture turned cold and sharp as steel in a second. He stood up from the table, his Alpha aura flaring with instant readiness. "Report."
Caleb glanced nervously at Elena and Jaxon before leaning closer to Max. "Lady Freya has escaped her quarters. And Elder Richard’s private guards have abandoned their posts at the northern gate."
Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird. She instantly pulled Jaxon off his chair, wrapping her arms tightly around her son and drawing him close to her chest.
They ran, Elena thought, panic spiking in her blood. They didn't just accept defeat... they are planning something far worse.
Max’s eyes turned into pools of liquid ice, a dark, murderous growl vibrating deep inside his chest. "How did she bypass the royal guards?"
"Someone inside the inner castle opened the hidden passages from the lower dungeons," Caleb replied, his jaw tight with shame. "There is a traitor among the pack house staff, My Lord."
Silence fell over the dining hall, suffocating and sharp as a double-edged sword.
Max turned around slowly to face Elena and Jaxon. Seeing the pale terror on Elena’s face, his heart twitched with an agonizing ache. He took two heavy strides toward them, stopping just inches away, his massive frame forming an impenetrable shield between them and the doorway.
"Caleb," Max commanded, his voice dark as a thunderstorm. "Double the royal guards on this floor. Seal every exit, every hidden tunnel, and every gate in the territory. No one enters or leaves this castle without my written seal."
"Understood, My Lord!" Caleb bowed and hurried out to execute the orders.
Max slowly lowered himself onto one knee in front of Elena and Jaxon. He reached out, his warm, large hand gently hovering over Jaxon’s shoulder without forcing a touch, while his icy eyes searched Elena’s frightened face with intense, burning sincerity.
"Listen to me, both of you," Max murmured softly, his voice rough with unspoken promises. "I will hunt Richard and Freya down to the ends of the earth. They will pay for every threat they made against my family."
"Max... they know Jaxon's power now," Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched her son tight. "If they couldn't strip him of his title legally, they will try to eliminate him from the shadows!"
"They will have to walk over my dead body first," Max declared, his hand finally resting firmly on Jaxon’s small shoulder, his fingers trembling slightly with protective rage.
Jaxon looked at Max’s massive hand on his shoulder, then up into his father's fierce, glowing blue eyes. For the first time since they had arrived at the castle, the young boy didn't pull away or make a stubborn joke. He felt the raw, protective warmth radiating from the giant man—a feeling he had never experienced in his five years of life.
"Big guy..." Jaxon whispered softly, holding his little wooden toy sword tight in his other hand. "Are the bad guys coming back?"
Max looked down into his son’s eyes, a rare, genuine warmth softening his cold features for a single second.
"No, little prince," Max whispered back, his voice dropping into a solemn, sacred vow. "The bad guys will never touch you again. I promise."
Max stood back up to his full height, his dark mantle swaying behind him as he turned toward the door, his eyes turning back into cold, lethal steel.
The calm before the storm had officially broken. The hunt was on.
