Chapter 6: The Ghost of Us

1130 Words
The heavy oak door of the royal suite clicked shut, locking out the suffocating whispers of the Bloodmoon Pack. The suite was vast and lavish, adorned with dark velvet curtains, a crackling marble fireplace, and a massive king-sized bed. It was the exact room Elena used to dream of sharing with Max back when she was just a naive orphan hopelessly in love with her Alpha. Now, being inside it felt like standing in a gilded cage. Elena sat on the edge of the bed, her hand gently stroking Jaxon’s hair. The five-year-old was finally fast asleep, worn out from the long, traumatic journey. Even in his sleep, his tiny hand tightly clutched the edge of Elena’s sleeve, as if terrified she might vanish if he let go. "You're safe now, my sweet boy," Elena whispered softly, leaning down to kiss his forehead. "Mommy won't let anyone hurt you." Suddenly, the air in the room shifted. The scent of dark oak, rain, and raw power filled the chamber before the door even opened. Elena froze, her spine instantly going rigid. Max stepped into the room. He had discarded his heavy leather coat and royal mantle, wearing only a dark, unbuttoned linen shirt that revealed the muscular contours of his chest. His icy blue eyes swept over the quiet room before settling heavily on Elena. "He sleeps deeply," Max said quietly, shutting the door behind him. His voice carried none of his usual Alpha command—it was surprisingly low, almost hesitant. Elena didn't look at him. She kept her eyes fixed on Jaxon, her shoulders tense as a fortress wall. "What do you want, Max? It's late." Max took a slow step forward, his heavy boots making no sound against the thick carpet. "We need to talk, Elena." "There is nothing to talk about," Elena replied, her tone cold and devoid of emotion. "You forced us back here. You paraded my son in front of your elders. You made your point. Now leave us alone." "He is my son too!" Max snapped, a brief flash of frustration breaking through his quiet demeanor. But as soon as he saw Elena flinch—instantly throwing her body between him and the sleeping child—Max caught himself. He pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a long, heavy exhale. "I didn't know, Elena," Max murmured, his voice cracking slightly. He closed the distance between them, stopping just a few feet away from the bed. "I swear to the Goddess... if I had known you were pregnant with my child, I never would have..." Elena let out a soft, bitter laugh. She slowly turned her head to face him, her dark eyes flashing with a mix of sorrow and pure disdain. "You never would have what, Max?" she challenged, her voice trembling with five years of suppressed rage. "You never would have banished me? You never would have declared me useless trash in front of the entire pack?" Max felt as though a physical blade had been plunged into his chest. "Elena, I—" "No, don't you dare lie to yourself!" Elena stood up abruptly, keeping her voice low so as not to wake Jaxon, but stepping right into Max's personal space with unbelievable courage. "You didn't reject me because of a baby, Max. You rejected me because I was wolfless. Because I had no powerful family background to strengthen your political reign. You tossed me out into a freezing blizzard to die because I was a defect in your perfect pack!" Max stared down at her pale, angry face, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides. Every word she spoke was the cold, unvarnished truth, and it tore through his soul like jagged glass. For five years, he had convinced himself that rejecting his wolfless mate was the right decision for the survival and dominance of the Bloodmoon Pack. But standing here now, looking into her cold eyes and seeing the magnificent, fierce mother she had become, a wave of sickening regret crashed over him. "I made a mistake," Max rasped out, stepping closer until he could feel the heat radiating from her skin. "I was young, arrogant, and blinded by duty. I thought I was protecting the pack." "And you shattered a soul in the process," Elena whispered, tears finally welling up in her eyes, though she refused to let them fall. "Do you have any idea what it felt like? The mate bond snapping... the cold rain... bleeding on the rocks while feeling a tiny heartbeat inside me? I almost died that night, Max. The only reason I survived was because Jaxon needed me." Max reached out, his long fingers hovering just a millimeter away from her cheek, desperate to wipe away the phantom pain in her eyes. "Elena... please." "Don't touch me," Elena spat out, recoiling from his hand as if his touch burned. "You are not my mate anymore. You severed that golden thread yourself. The only reason I am in this castle right now is because you forced my son here with your soldiers." Max slowly lowered his hand, his heart hammering against his ribs in a dark, suffocating rhythm. The raw power of the royal Alpha King meant nothing in this room. He had all the authority in the world, yet he was completely powerless against the cold wall she had built around her heart. "You are right," Max said softly, his icy blue eyes darkening with an unyielding, dangerous resolve. "I destroyed us five years ago. I broke the bond. But I am not that same arrogant boy anymore, Elena." Max took a step back, locking his gaze onto hers with absolute seriousness. "You and Jaxon will stay in these royal suites. No elder, no warrior, and no female in this pack will ever touch a single hair on your heads again. And as for you, Elena..." Max’s voice dropped to a low, possessive rumble. "I will spend every single day earning back what I threw away. You may hate me now, but I will make you see that this is where you belong." Elena stared at him, her heart skipping a chaotic beat despite her hatred. "I will never forgive you, Alpha Max." "Then let me bleed until you do," Max replied coldly, turning on his heel and walking toward the door. As he placed his hand on the handle, he paused, looking back over his shoulder at his sleeping son, and then at Elena. "Get some rest," Max whispered. "Tomorrow, your new life in the Bloodmoon Pack begins." The door closed behind him, leaving Elena standing alone in the quiet, dim light of the fireplace, her chest heaving as the echoes of his dangerous promise lingered in the air.
