Chapter 8: The Snake’s Venom

1300 Words
The afternoon sun slowly dipped below the horizon, casting long, crimson shadows across the grand corridors of the Bloodmoon Castle. Inside the royal suite, two royal tailors bustled around, laying out elaborate silk gowns, obsidian suits, and sparkling silver accessories. Max had ordered the finest garments from the capital for the evening’s Royal Pack Gala, sparing no expense to ensure his son and Elena looked like nobility. Elena stood near the tall archway, watching Jaxon proudly inspect a tiny navy-blue suit trimmed with silver thread. "Look, Mommy! I have silver buttons just like Big Uncle Caleb!" Jaxon cheered, puffing out his chest and striking a military pose. Elena smiled softly, but the knot of dread in her stomach only tightened. She hated this. She hated the grandeur, the fake smiles, and the suffocating political games of the wolf nobility. "Lady Elena?" a quiet voice interrupted her thoughts. Elena turned to see one of the young pack servant girls bowing nervously. "Pardon the intrusion, but Alpha Max has requested your presence in the garden pavilion before the guests arrive. He wishes to discuss the security protocol for Master Jaxon." Elena frowned slightly. Max was usually meticulous about sending Commander Caleb for such messages, but the mention of Jaxon's safety instantly put her on high alert. "Jax, stay here with the tailors and the guards, alright?" Elena instructed, kissing her son's forehead. "Mommy will be right back." "Okay, Mommy! Don't be long!" Jaxon called back, busy admiring his polished leather shoes. Elena stepped out into the quiet, dimly lit stone corridor leading to the high balcony gardens. The evening breeze was crisp, carrying the scent of night-blooming jasmine—a scent that brought back painful memories of her past life here. She reached the secluded marble pavilion, but it was completely empty. No guards. No Max. "Looking for someone, wolfless parasite?" A sharp, dripping-with-venom voice echoed behind her. Elena whirled around. Stepping out from the shadow of the tall marble pillars was Lady Freya. She was draped in a suffocating gown of blood-red silk, her dark hair styled intricately, and her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred. Elena’s expression instantly closed off, turning cold as stone. "Freya." "That’s Lady Freya to you, orphan," Freya spat, taking slow, deliberate steps toward Elena until she was mere inches away. "I must admit, I was impressed. Five years in the dirt, and you managed to crawl back into this castle using a bastard child as your golden ticket." Elena didn't flinch. She held Freya’s hostile glare without a single shred of fear. "Jaxon is not a bastard. He is Max’s son. And I didn't 'crawl' anywhere—your Alpha dragged us here against my will." Freya’s jaw clenched, her manicured fingers digging into her own palms. "Don't play the innocent victim with me! You think because you bore him a child, you can take what is mine? I have spent five years rebuilding this pack! I have stood by Max’s side, managing his affairs, winning over the council! You are nothing but a defective, wolfless female who was thrown out like trash!" "If I am so useless," Elena replied, her voice dangerously calm, stepping forward into Freya’s space, "then why are your hands shaking, Freya? Why are you out here hiding in the shadows, begging me to leave?" Freya gasped, her face contorting in rage. "You arrogant b***h—" "I don't want your position, Freya," Elena interrupted, her eyes piercing straight through the noblewoman. "I don't want Max. I don't want this title, and I certainly don't want this throne. But if you EVER call my son a bastard again, or if you even look at him the wrong way... I promise you, I will make you regret the day you were born." A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the pavilion. Freya stared at Elena in utter disbelief. The fragile, timid orphan girl from five years ago was gone. Standing before her was a fierce, protective mother with eyes sharp enough to draw blood. Freya sneered, a cruel, sinister glint flashing in her dark eyes. "You think you're so brave, don't you? Let’s see if your little half-breed son remains brave when the entire pack council demands his bloodline tested under the Moon Goddess's silver blade tonight." Elena’s heart skipped a terrifying beat. The Silver Blade Test. An ancient, brutal pack ritual used to test the purity of royal heirs—a test that could be lethal to a young child if his wolf hadn't fully awakened yet. "He is five years old!" Elena gasped, her composure finally breaking into panic. "It could kill him!" "Then you better take your bastard and run back into the mud where you belong," Freya whispered maliciously, stepping closer. "Because tonight at the gala, my father will invoke the ancient law. And Max will have no choice but to obey." Before Elena could respond, a low, murderous growl vibrated through the stone floor, causing the very air in the garden to drop below freezing. "He will obey who?" Both women froze. Max stepped out from the shadowy archway, his massive frame towering over the pavilion. His dark leather coat billowed around him, his aura flaring with such terrifying, dominant rage that the stone pillars seemed to tremble. His icy blue eyes were locked entirely on Freya, burning with lethal intent. Freya’s face drained of all color instantly. She stumbled backward, dropping to her knees in pure, instinctual terror under the crushing weight of her Alpha King’s rage. "M-Max... my Lord... I was just—" "Silence!" Max roared, his royal command echoing across the castle grounds like thunder. He stepped past Freya as if she were dirt under his boots, striding directly to Elena. Seeing the terror and pale distress on Elena’s face, Max’s chest heaved with suppressed violence. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently taking hers, his fingers wrapping firmly around her trembling palm. Elena tried to pull away, but Max held her tight, pulling her gently behind his broad shoulders to shield her. "Caleb!" Max commanded, his voice dark as death. Commander Caleb appeared from the shadows in a split second, bowing deeply. "My Lord." Max looked down at Freya, who was trembling on the marble floor, tears of panic spilling down her cheeks. "Escort Lady Freya to her quarters," Max ordered, his voice cold as arctic ice. "She is restricted from attending the Royal Gala tonight. If she sets foot outside her room before tomorrow morning... throw her in the dungeons." "Max, no! Please!" Freya cried out in horror. "My father—" "Your father will answer to me at the gala," Max cut her off without mercy. "Drag her away." Caleb immediately seized Freya’s arm, pulling her up and escorting the sobbing noblewoman away into the castle interior. Silence returned to the pavilion. Elena stood frozen behind Max, her hand still locked in his tight, protective grip. She could feel the violent hammer of his heartbeat, the sheer rage radiating from his body—and yet, his touch on her hand was astonishingly gentle. Max slowly turned around to face her, his icy eyes searching her face with deep, burning concern. "Did she hurt you, Elena?" Max asked softly, his voice rough. Elena pulled her hand back from his grip, taking a step away. She wiped her cold palms against her skirt, looking up at him with guarded, anxious eyes. "Is it true, Max?" Elena asked, her voice trembling. "The Silver Blade Test... will Elder Richard force Jaxon into it tonight?" Max’s eyes narrowed, a dark, dangerous promise flashing within their blue depths. He stepped closer, towering over her, his presence an unyielding shield. "Over my dead body," Max whispered softly. "No one touches our son, Elena. Not tonight. Not ever."
