Chapter One
"Hello. This is Jack!" Jack answered his phone without checking the caller ID.
A cheerful voice comes over the line, "Jack! Good buddy! How ya doin'?"
Jack smiled with affection as he recognized his best friend's voice. "Leo! I'm good, man. Long time. How's everything with you? Leanna good?"
"Yeah, man. We're good... in fact, we're better than good. When are you coming home for a visit?"
Jack had been Leo's best friend since before either of them could remember. They did everything together and were completely inseparable until Leo found his mate. Everyone knows that everything changes when you find your mate. It was no longer Jack and Leo. It became Leo and Leanna plus Jack. Tired of being the third wheel, Jack had gracefully pulled away from his best friend and his mate and allowed the new unit to develop without him, as it should be. Of course he understood that they would always be friends, but with a mate, comes a shift in priorities, and it is a well known fact that newly mated couples are insufferable and should never be allowed in public because they seem to be incapable of keeping their hands and stuff to themselves.
A mate is every werewolf's fondest desire until they get one, and thereafter, their greatest treasure. Werewolves reach maturity at the age of sixteen and can then find their fated mate, who is made for each other and love unconditionally, are inescapably sexy to each other, help to take away physical pain and speed healing, are unimaginably interesting and just complete each other on every level. This is what every werewolf is taught from the time they become self aware. It is therefore somewhat of a stigma for a wolf to remain unmated at twenty-one, as Jack is. For the past five years, he has watched every single one of his friends and family come of age and find their mates. He began wondering what was wrong with him, why didn't he get a mate? Didn't he deserve love too? Where was his special person who farts roses and shits sunshine? When he graduated at eighteen, he couldn't take it anymore and left his pack to travel the world and hopefully find his mate. He realized that his mate must not be in his pack... everyone there was mated except him and the underage wolves. So, coming to the conclusion that his mate must be somewhere out there, he left after graduation with high hopes to find her.
Three more mateless years later, he had lost hope and concluded that maybe she had died before they could meet and he was doomed to be alone for his entire life. He had never felt any particular attraction to anyone beyond friendship, so he just figured that he would live and die alone.
