Episode 1: chronicles of a looser
“Why would she even try to speak if she can’t?” Tyler Parker’s mocking voice rang out across the cafeteria, cutting through the usual lunchtime noise.
Emily Johnson sat alone at her usual table, staring intently at her tray. The familiar heat of embarrassment crept up her neck. The laughter that followed Tyler’s remark felt like daggers.
“Oh, come on, Tyler,” another voice joined in. “She’s probably used to it by now. Mute girl doesn’t need to speak to understand she’s a loser.”
Emily’s heart pounded. She clenched her fists under the table, wishing she could just disappear. It wasn’t just the words that hurt; it was the fact that nobody else ever stood up for her.
“Nah, I bet she’s got a voice,” Tyler continued, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “She’s just too scared to use it.”
Laughter echoed around the room, and Emily fought back tears. Her mind screamed for her to do something, to say something, but her body wouldn’t cooperate.
Suddenly, a chair scraped loudly as Lucas Bennett stood up from his seat a few tables away. He marched over to where Emily sat, his eyes blazing with anger.
“Why don’t you all just shut up?” Lucas’s voice cut through the laughter, silencing the room. “Emily doesn’t need to prove anything to you.”
Tyler rolled his eyes and leaned back in his chair, smirking. “What’s your problem, Bennett? We’re just having a little fun.”
“Fun?” Lucas’s voice rose, attracting more attention. “You call bullying someone fun? Grow up, Tyler. You and your friends are pathetic.”
The cafeteria fell silent, everyone watching the confrontation with wide eyes. Tyler’s smirk faltered, and he shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
“Whatever, man. Don’t get so worked up over it,” Tyler muttered, trying to brush it off.
Lucas turned to Emily, his expression softening. “Are you okay?” he asked gently.
Emily nodded, her heart still racing. She wanted to thank him, but the words wouldn’t come. Instead, she mouthed a silent “Thank you.”
Lucas seemed to understand. “Don’t let them get to you,” he said. “You’re stronger than they know.”
That evening, Emily found herself in the school gym, practicing her dance routine. The rhythmic movements helped her forget the events of the day, even if just for a little while. She lost herself in the music, her body flowing with grace and precision.
As the song ended, she turned and saw Lucas standing by the door, watching her with a smile.
“You’re incredible,” he said, his voice filled with admiration.
Emily blushed, feeling both embarrassed and flattered. She had always been self-conscious about her dancing, but Lucas’s praise made her feel like she could conquer the world.
“Thanks,” she mouthed, hoping he could read her lips.
Lucas walked over, his smile widening. “Have you thought more about the talent show? I really think you should enter.”
Emily hesitated, the familiar fear creeping in. She loved dancing, but the thought of performing in front of the entire school was terrifying.
“Think about it,” Lucas urged. “You don’t have to decide right now. But I really think you should do it.”
Emily nodded, promising to consider it.
The next day, during a particularly dull history class, Emily was called to the front of the room by Mrs. Carter, the history teacher.
“Emily, can you come up here and share your project outline with the class?” Mrs. Carter asked, unaware of the panic her request was causing.
Emily’s stomach churned. She felt the eyes of her classmates boring into her as she slowly made her way to the front. Her hands trembled as she held her notebook, her mind racing for a way out.
“Come on, Emily, we don’t have all day,” Tyler’s voice jeered from the back of the room, followed by snickers from his friends.
She glanced around, searching for Lucas or Lily, but they weren’t in this class. She was on her own.
Taking a deep breath, Emily opened her notebook and began to write furiously. She couldn’t speak, but she could at least show them what she had prepared. She flipped the notebook around, revealing her meticulously detailed outline.
The class went silent, staring at the page. Mrs. Carter stepped closer to read it, her brow furrowing.
“Emily, this is excellent,” Mrs. Carter said, her voice filled with genuine admiration. “You’ve put a lot of thought into this.”
Emily’s relief was short-lived as the door to the classroom suddenly burst open. A janitor, out of breath, stumbled in.
“Mrs. Carter, you need to come quickly. There’s been an accident in the cafeteria.”
The class erupted into whispers as Mrs. Carter hurried out, instructing everyone to stay seated. Tyler and his friends immediately began speculating, their voices filled with morbid curiosity.
Emily felt a knot of dread in her stomach. She could only hope that whatever had happened, it wasn’t serious. She returned to her seat, trying to focus on her notebook and ignore the growing anxiety.
Minutes later, the principal’s voice crackled over the intercom. “Attention, students. There has been a minor incident in the cafeteria. All students are to remain in their classrooms until further notice. Thank you.”
The classroom buzzed with nervous energy. Emily’s thoughts were interrupted by a sudden commotion at the back of the room. Tyler had stood up, knocking over his chair, and was staring at his phone with wide eyes.
“No way,” he muttered. “This can’t be real.”
“What is it?” one of his friends asked, craning their neck to see the screen.
“Someone posted a video of... Oh, man, you have to see this,” Tyler said, passing his phone around.
Curiosity got the better of Emily, and she glanced over to see what had captured everyone’s attention. The phone made its way around the room, finally landing in the hands of the girl sitting next to her. She hesitated, then handed it to Emily, who watched the video in stunned silence.
It was a grainy clip from the cafeteria, showing a janitor accidentally knocking over a stack of trays, sending food flying everywhere. The camera panned to catch Lucas slipping on the mess, falling dramatically to the floor. But that wasn’t the worst part. As Lucas tried to get up, he grabbed onto a table for support, only for it to collapse under his weight, causing an even bigger mess.
The entire class burst into laughter, and Emily’s heart sank. She could only imagine how mortified Lucas must be. She needed to find him, to make sure he was okay.
As soon as the bell rang, Emily bolted from her seat and headed towards the cafeteria. She found Lucas sitting on one of the benches outside, his face buried in his hands.
“Lucas?” she signed, hoping he would look up.
He did, his face flushed with embarrassment. “Emily, you saw it, didn’t you?”
Emily nodded, her heart aching for him. She sat down beside him, unsure of how to comfort him. She pulled out her notebook and wrote: *It wasn’t your fault. Accidents happen.*
Lucas sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I know, but now everyone’s laughing at me. I’ve never been so embarrassed in my life.”
Emily placed a hand on his arm, giving him a reassuring squeeze. She wished she could do more, could say more, but she hoped her presence was enough to show him that he wasn’t alone.
Just then, Lily appeared, her eyes wide with concern. “I heard what happened. Lucas, are you okay?”
Lucas managed a small smile. “I will be. Thanks, Lily.”
Lily sat down on his other side, giving him a supportive hug. “We’ll get through this together. And if anyone tries to make fun of you, they’ll have to answer to me.”
Lucas chuckled, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. “Thanks, both of you. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Emily smiled, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. She knew that together, they could face anything. And as they sat there, she felt a newfound determination to support her friends just as they had supported her.
Little did she know, this incident was just the beginning. Their bond would soon be tested in ways they couldn’t imagine, leading them into challenges that would change their lives forever.
