The silence after Nadira's accusation was suffocating.
Arzoo looked at her mother.
Then at Zayan.
Then back at Nadira.
"Say it isn't true."
Samira's face was pale.
"Arzoo—"
"Say it!"
Her voice echoed through the passage.
Samira closed her eyes.
"I cannot."
Arzoo's heart sank.
Zayan stepped forward.
"Mother didn't order my father's death."
Nadira smiled.
"Then why won't Samira deny it?"
Zayan turned toward Samira.
"Tell me."
Samira's lips trembled.
"I didn't order his death."
Nadira's smile disappeared.
"But you knew it would happen."
Samira looked away.
That was enough to make Zayan's expression change.
"You knew?"
Samira whispered,
"I knew someone planned to kill him."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"You let him die."
"I tried to stop it!"
Her voice broke.
"I went to your father that night because I had discovered the conspiracy."
Zayan stared at her.
"Then why did you disappear?"
"Because when I reached the study..."
Samira's eyes filled with tears.
"...he was already dead."
The Missing Weapon
Nadira stepped forward.
"And the weapon?"
Samira didn't answer.
Nadira looked at Arzoo.
"Ask your mother where she hid it."
Arzoo turned.
"Mother?"
Samira's silence stretched.
Finally, she reached beneath her cloak.
She removed a long cloth-wrapped object.
Zayan's eyes widened.
"No."
Samira slowly unfolded it.
A dagger appeared.
The same imperial crest.
The same darkened blade.
Arzoo recognized it immediately.
"It..."
Her voice failed.
Nadira smiled.
"The murder weapon."
Zayan stared at his mother.
"You kept it."
"I had to."
"Why?"
"Because it was the only proof I had."
"Proof of what?"
Samira looked at him.
"That the person who killed your father was not acting alone."
The Hidden Inscription
Arzoo took a cautious step forward.
"Can I see it?"
Samira hesitated.
Then handed it to her.
Arzoo examined the hilt.
There was the Imperial crest.
But beneath it...
A tiny inscription.
She wiped away the dust.
Three words appeared.
For the firstborn.
Zayan's expression hardened.
"What does that mean?"
Samira looked at Arzoo.
"It was meant for you."
Arzoo nearly dropped the dagger.
"Me?"
Nadira laughed softly.
"Now you understand."
"No."
Arzoo shook her head.
"I understand nothing."
Nadira's voice became strangely gentle.
"You were born to inherit the empire."
"But someone decided you were too dangerous."
"Who?"
Nadira looked at Zayan.
"His mother."
Samira immediately stepped forward.
"Don't listen to her."
"Then tell her the truth."
Samira looked at Arzoo.
"The truth is..."
She swallowed.
"I was afraid."
The Choice
Zayan moved closer to his mother.
"You were afraid of what?"
"Of the council."
"Of Nadira?"
"Of everyone."
Samira lowered her gaze.
"Your father had enemies everywhere."
"The nobles wanted different heirs."
"Generals were choosing sides."
"And Nadira had already begun building her own faction."
Zayan clenched his fists.
"So you hid Arzoo."
"Yes."
"You made her believe she belonged to another family."
"Yes."
"You erased her identity."
"I saved her life."
Arzoo whispered,
"But you took my life away."
Samira's face broke.
"I know."
That simple answer hurt more than an excuse.
Arzoo looked away.
"I don't know whether to forgive you."
"You don't have to."
Nadira's Real Plan
Nadira stepped backward.
"Enough family tears."
She looked toward the passage.
"The palace is waiting."
Zayan's eyes narrowed.
"For what?"
"For the coronation."
Arzoo froze.
Nadira looked at her.
"By sunrise, the council will crown you Empress."
"I don't want the throne."
Nadira smiled.
"You don't have to want it."
"Why me?"
"Because the nobles need a ruler they can control."
"And you?"
Nadira's smile vanished.
"I need the empire."
Zayan drew his sword.
"You won't have it."
Nadira calmly raised one hand.
Dozens of soldiers appeared behind her.
Zayan looked around.
They were surrounded.
Nadira spoke quietly.
"Put down your sword."
"No."
"Then your brother dies."
Zayan froze.
Arzoo's heart stopped.
"Kamran?"
Nadira nodded.
"He is alive."
The Bargain
Arzoo stepped forward.
"What have you done to him?"
"Nothing."
"Yet."
Nadira smiled.
"That depends on you."
Zayan immediately said,
"Don't bargain with her."
Arzoo looked at him.
"What choice do I have?"
"Every choice."
"You have a sword."
"I have you."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"And that's enough."
Nadira laughed.
"How touching."
Then she turned to Arzoo.
"Come with me."
"No."
Nadira's eyes hardened.
"Then Kamran dies."
Arzoo looked at Zayan.
He shook his head.
"Don't."
She whispered,
"If I don't go..."
"I'll find him."
"Alone?"
"If necessary."
Arzoo knew he meant it.
She slowly stepped toward Nadira.
"Fine."
Zayan grabbed her wrist.
"No."
Arzoo looked at him.
"Trust me."
Those two words stopped him.
For the first time...
She wasn't asking him to protect her.
She was asking him to trust her.
Zayan released her.
Arzoo walked toward Nadira.
The Secret Message
As she passed Zayan, something slipped from her sleeve.
The dagger.
It fell to the ground.
Zayan looked down.
Then at her.
Arzoo's fingers briefly touched her palm.
A tiny folded paper rested there.
He understood.
She had left him a message.
Nadira didn't notice.
Arzoo continued walking.
But before she disappeared around the corner...
She turned once.
Their eyes met.
Zayan's expression changed.
He had understood.
Don't rescue me. Follow the dagger.
The Trap
Nadira led Arzoo through the palace.
Every corridor was filled with soldiers.
The imperial banners had been removed.
Black banners now hung from the walls.
Arzoo looked around.
"This isn't your first time here."
Nadira smiled.
"I lived here before you were born."
"Then why did you disappear?"
"Because your father thought he had defeated me."
"And he didn't?"
"No."
Nadira stopped before an ancient door.
She opened it.
Inside was a small chamber.
A young man sat chained to the wall.
Arzoo's heart broke.
"Kamran."
He looked up.
His eyes widened.
"Arzoo?"
She rushed toward him.
Nadira blocked her.
"Not yet."
Arzoo stared at her.
"What do you want?"
Nadira pointed toward the throne room.
"The crown."
"You already control the palace."
"I want legitimacy."
"You want me to rule for you."
"Exactly."
Arzoo's expression hardened.
"And if I refuse?"
Nadira looked at Kamran.
"Then his blood will stain the throne room."
Arzoo clenched her fists.
"You won't win."
Nadira smiled.
"Perhaps."
She opened the chamber door.
"Because you still don't know the most important secret."
Arzoo looked at her.
"What secret?"
Nadira leaned close.
"Kamran isn't your brother."
Arzoo froze.
Nadira whispered,
"He's your son."
The world seemed to stop.
Arzoo stared at her in disbelief.
Then Kamran suddenly shouted—
"She's lying!"
Nadira smiled.
And somewhere behind the palace walls...
A sword struck stone.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Zayan had found them.
