A New Beginning
Chapter 1: A New Beginning
Lily Walker stood at the entrance of the campus, her eyes scanning the vast expanse of college life unfolding before her. The towering buildings, bustling students, and the steady hum of chatter felt overwhelming, yet exhilarating. She adjusted the strap of her worn-out backpack, clutching her notebook to her chest as though it could offer some comfort in this sea of unfamiliar faces.
It was her first day of college—an experience she had dreamed of for years. But as much as she had imagined herself stepping onto this campus with a sense of confidence, the reality was a far cry from the picture she had painted in her mind. She was the quiet girl—the one who sat alone in the back of class, who spent her weekends curled up with a book, escaping into worlds where she didn't have to worry about socializing.
Now, here she was, standing on a new campus, about to face the world head-on.
Her stomach twisted into knots.
"You got this," she whispered to herself, taking a deep breath and letting the fresh, crisp air fill her lungs. The sun was shining, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the trees that lined the walkways. There was beauty in the chaos of it all, and yet, her mind kept returning to the one thing that had kept her up for weeks—the fear of not fitting in.
Lily had always been a bit of an outsider. Her social anxiety had followed her from high school, where she'd spent most of her time lost in her studies, rather than trying to make friends. She wasn’t the type to party, nor did she have a knack for small talk. Her world had always been quiet, contained within the pages of the books she read or the pages she filled with her own thoughts. But college… college was supposed to be different. She had promised herself that this would be her chance to start over, to break out of her shell.
Taking another deep breath, she walked through the crowd, hoping her nerves weren’t as apparent as they felt. She adjusted her thick glasses and ran a hand through her messy brown hair, wishing she had done something more with it that morning. Maybe she should have worn something other than a sweater and jeans. But that was who she was: simple, plain, and unnoticed.
She found her first class with relative ease, grateful that she had gotten there early enough to secure a seat at the back. It was a large lecture hall, and she settled into the corner, trying to make herself as invisible as possible. Her heart hammered in her chest as more students filed in, and she anxiously checked the time on her phone, wondering if she'd look too eager by pulling out her notebook before the lecture even started.
"Hey, you’re in my seat."
Lily froze, her heart leaping into her throat. She looked up, startled by the voice, and immediately met a pair of intense blue eyes that seemed to pierce right through her. The guy standing in front of her was tall, effortlessly handsome, and wore a look of mild irritation on his face. His jaw was sharp, his hair dark and tousled, and there was a confidence in the way he stood that made her feel small in comparison.
"Oh, I—I'm sorry," Lily stammered, quickly grabbing her bag to move. "I didn’t realize—"
"You should pay more attention," he interrupted, his voice low and smooth, like he was used to giving orders. He didn’t even seem to look at her as he slid into the seat beside her, his body brushing against hers, making her cheeks flush.
Lily's pulse raced, and she suddenly felt all too aware of every inch of her skin. The guy didn’t even glance her way, but the weight of his presence filled the space, heavy and unapologetic. She fought the urge to shrink back, to melt into the chair and disappear.
As the class began, Lily tried to focus on the professor’s words, but her mind kept drifting back to the guy next to her—the way he had spoken to her, the way he commanded the room with nothing more than a glance. She couldn’t help but feel a little intimidated, even though she had no reason to. Maybe it was the arrogance that practically oozed from him, or the sharp, calculating way he’d sized her up without so much as a second thought.
She didn’t expect him to talk to her again. Guys like him didn’t bother with girls like her. But the rest of the lecture went by in a blur, her thoughts swirling in a storm of confusion.
By the time the class ended, she was gathering her things as quickly as possible, eager to leave before any more awkward encounters could happen. But just as she was about to slip out of the aisle, she heard the sound of footsteps approaching her.
"Watch your back,Walker," came the familiar voice—the one that had disrupted her concentration earlier.
Lily’s heart skipped a beat. She froze, looking up, but the guy was already walking away, disappearing into the crowd, leaving behind nothing but the weight of his words.
She wasn’t sure if it was a threat, a warning, or just a joke. But something about it made her stomach twist in a way she couldn’t quite explain.
