He was too perfect, too charming. It was like he was hiding something behind his smile. As they sat down for dinner, Marie's parents beaming with pride, Mr. Tyson turned to her and said, "So, Marie, tell me more about yourself." Marie hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But Mr. Tyson's eyes seemed to bore into her soul, as if he could see right through her. Just as she was about to answer, a loud crash echoed from the kitchen. The lights flickered, and the room fell silent. "What was that?" Marie's mother asked, her voice trembling. Mr. Tyson's expression turned cold, his eyes narrowing. "I'll go check," he said, getting up from his seat. As he left the room, Marie felt a chill run down her spine. What was going on? Suddenly, Alex's words came back to her. "Mr. Tyson is not a man to be trusted." Marie's heart racing, she got up from her seat and followed Mr. Tyson into the kitchen. What she saw there made her blood run cold... In the kitchen, Marie saw one of the staff members, a young woman, cowering in the corner. Mr. Tyson was standing over her, his face twisted in anger. "What happened?" Marie asked, trying to keep her voice steady. The staff member looked up at her, fear in her eyes. "I broke a glass," she stuttered. Mr. Tyson turned to Marie, his expression cold. "Accidents happen," he said. "But I don't tolerate carelessness." Marie felt a surge of unease. There was something sinister about Mr. Tyson's behavior. Suddenly, the staff member spoke up. "Please, Mr. Tyson, don't hurt me." Marie's eyes widened in shock. What was going on? Mr. Tyson's face turned red with rage. "How dare you," he spat, raising his hand. Marie knew she had to act fast. She stepped forward, putting herself between Mr. Tyson and the staff member. "Stop," Marie said, trying to keep her voice firm. "Leave her alone." Mr. Tyson's eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing. For a moment, Marie thought she saw something evil lurking behind his eyes. Then, his expression changed, and he smiled. "Of course, Marie," he said. "I wouldn't want to upset you." But Marie knew what she saw. And she knew she had to get out of there, fast. As they finished dinner, Marie's parents excused themselves, leaving her alone with Mr. Tyson for a brief moment. "So, Marie," Mr. Tyson said, turning to her with a charming smile. "I must say, I'm very pleased with you. You're even more beautiful and charming than I expected." Marie forced a smile, trying to hide her discomfort. "Thank you, Mr. Tyson," she said. "You're very kind." Mr. Tyson leaned in closer, his eyes locked on hers. "I think we're going to get along just fine, Marie," he said. "I can see us having a very happy life together." Marie's heart sank, but she tried to keep up the charade. "I'm glad to hear that, Mr. Tyson," she said. After a few more minutes of small talk, Marie's parents returned, and they all said their goodbyes. As they drove home, Marie's parents chattered excitedly about the engagement and the upcoming wedding. Marie nodded and smiled, pretending to share their enthusiasm. But as soon as they walked in the door, she excused herself and went to her room, feeling trapped and desperate. Just as she was starting to feel like she had no way out, Marie remembered Alex's offer to help her. She decided to confide in him about what had happened at dinner and see if he had any new information about Mr. Tyson. She went downstairs to the kitchen, where her parents were still chatting, and asked to use the phone. She called Alex, trying to keep her voice low. "Hey, it's me," she said. "I need to talk to you about Mr. Tyson." "What is it?" Alex asked, his voice concerned. Marie took a deep breath and told him everything the way Mr. Tyson looked at her, the things he said, the way he made her feel. Alex listened intently, his expression growing more and more serious. "I think I know what's going on," he said. "Meet me at the coffee shop tomorrow, and I'll tell you everything." Marie's heart raced as she hung up the phone. What did Alex know about Mr. Tyson? She couldn't wait to find out. The next day, Marie made her way to the coffee shop, her mind racing with possibilities. When she saw Alex sitting at a table, she rushed over to him. "What is it?" Marie asked, sitting down across from him. "What do you know about Mr. Tyson?" Alex hesitated, looking around the coffee shop nervously. "I don't think we should talk here," he said. "Follow me." Marie followed Alex to his car, her heart pounding in her chest. What was going on? As soon as they were safely inside the car, Alex turned to her. "Mr. Tyson is not who he seems," he said. "I've been digging into his past, and I found some disturbing things." Marie's eyes widened. "What kind of things?" Alex hesitated, looking at her seriously. "I think he's involved in some shady business dealings," he said. "And I think he's using your family's debt to control you." Marie's eyes widened in shock as Alex revealed the truth about Mr. Tyson. She knew she had to act fast, but before she could even process the information, her phone rang. "It's your mother," Alex said, looking at the caller ID on Marie's phone. Marie hesitated, but Alex encouraged her to answer. "Maybe she's calling to tell you something important," he said. Marie took a deep breath and answered the phone. "Hello, Mother," she said. "Marie, dear, we've set the wedding date!" her mother exclaimed. "It's going to be in three weeks! We're so excited!" Marie's heart sank. Three weeks? That was so soon! "Mother, I… don't know if I'm ready," Marie stammered. "Don't be silly, dear," her mother said. "Of course, you're ready. We've already started making arrangements. Your father and I are meeting with Mr. Tyson right now to finalize the details." Marie felt a wave of panic wash over her. This was happening too fast. "Mother, please...can't we wait?" Marie begged. "No, dear, we can't wait," her mother said firmly. "Mr. Tyson is eager to move forward, and we can't keep him waiting. Besides, it's all settled now. The wedding is going to be beautiful, and you're going to make a stunning bride." Marie felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She knew she had to think fast, or she'd be trapped in a marriage with a man she didn't love or trust. Just then, Alex spoke up. "Don't worry. We'll figure something out." Marie nodded, feeling a surge of gratitude towards Alex. As she hung up the phone, Marie saw a sleek black car pull up outside. A tall, dark-haired man stepped out, looking around uncertainly. "Excuse me," he said, approaching Marie and Alex. "I'm new in town. Can you tell me where the city center is?" Marie hesitated, unsure of what to say. Alex jumped in, giving the man directions.
