Curious and rebellious, Alia secretly ventures into the forbidden dungeon beneath the Light Temple, where a so-called “monster” is sealed. Instead of a terrifying creature, she finds Reinhardt—a cold, aloof prisoner bound by enchanted chains. Despite his warnings, Alia returns again and again, drawn to the loneliness behind his golden eyes. When she gifts him a “Starlight Vial,” a fragile connection forms between them. 1. The Secret of the Temple
At dusk, the chimes of the Light Temple echoed softly, their melodic tones lingering in the air. Devout followers knelt in prayer across the vast square, their murmurs blending with the fading daylight. But in the shadowed corner of the temple's rear entrance, a slender figure slipped by unnoticed, vanishing into the darkened corridor. "Hmm... cake, herbs, starlight vial... that should be everything." Alia muttered as she checked the bundle in her arms, her fingers quickly counting the contents. Satisfied, she gave a small nod. Tonight, she was heading to the dungeon again. The lowest level of the Light Temple — the place rumored to hold a "monster" sealed away from the world. No one truly knew what lay within; even the royal family spoke of it in hushed tones. The Grand Magister had warned Alia countless times, "Never go near that place. It is forbidden." But Alia never did take kindly to warnings. "How dangerous can it really be if the seal is this weak?" she scoffed, pulling out a rune stone etched with intricate magical patterns. With practiced ease, she traced a simple unlocking sigil onto the stone wall. The magical lock shattered with a faint crackle. A heavy stone door creaked open, releasing a wave of cold, stale air. The dungeon was a dark, cavernous abyss, the silence so profound it pressed against her ears. Holding up a small lantern, Alia tiptoed down the stone steps. The soft scrape of her boots against the stone echoed loudly in the hollow space, every step magnified. She had lost count of how many times she'd snuck in by now. At first, she'd been terrified. The rumors alone had been enough to keep anyone away. But the first time she saw the so-called "monster," most of that fear... simply faded. Monster? She scoffed inwardly. He looks more like a lonely prisoner than anything else. Alia made her way to the iron bars at the far end of the dungeon, knocking lightly on the rusted metal. "I'm back!" she whispered, her voice bouncing off the cold stone walls. During her first few visits, the prisoner inside barely acknowledged her. But over time, he had come to expect her. He always waited for her to speak first. A long silence followed before a low, resigned sigh echoed from the shadows. "...You really aren't afraid of dying, are you, girl?" From the darkness, two golden slits flickered to life. Alia's heart gave a small jump — those were the eyes of a predator, sharp and wild, like a beast lurking in the night. But there was no menace in them now, only a strange, lazy curiosity. A tall figure emerged from the shadows, his movements slow but fluid. He looked to be around twenty-two, with a lean frame partially hidden beneath torn black clothes. His striking golden eyes glowed softly in the dark, and though his features were handsome, there was a sharp edge to his cold expression. But what stood out most were the heavy iron chains around his wrists and ankles, faint traces of sealing magic still glimmering along their surface. "I told you before—this isn't a place you should be," the prisoner, Reinhardt, muttered, leaning lazily against the iron bars. His voice was deep and indifferent, laced with a hint of weariness. "You say that every time," Alia replied cheerfully, waving a hand. "But I'm still here, aren't I?" "...Aren't you afraid I might eat you?" Reinhardt narrowed his eyes, the golden slits contracting as if seriously considering the idea. "You wouldn't," she shot back, completely unfazed. Her large blue eyes sparkled as she grinned. "You ate that cream cake I brought last time, didn't you? Stop pretending." Reinhardt stared at her for a moment before a soft, dry chuckle escaped his lips. He was used to her shamelessness by now. "I brought new stuff today!" Alia declared, pulling a slice of raspberry cake from her bundle, followed by a small glass vial. "This is a 'Starlight Vial.'" She shook it gently, and inside, a miniature swirl of stardust rotated slowly, glowing faintly. "It holds a tiny piece of a star cloud. If you open the lid, you can see the stars, even in the dark." She extended the vial through the iron bars, careful not to spill the delicate light. Reinhardt hesitated. For a long moment, he simply stared at it before, at last, reaching out. The chains rattled softly as he grasped the vial, his fingertips brushing the cold glass. A faint warmth seeped into his palm through the chill. "...Pointless little trinket," he muttered, though he didn't let go. "This place is dark and cold. I thought... maybe you'd like to see the stars again," Alia said gently. There was a softness in her tone that surprised even herself. "It must have been a long time since you last saw the sky, right?" Reinhardt's fingers tensed around the vial. For a beat, he said nothing. His thumb traced the smooth glass surface, as though through it, he could glimpse the forgotten night sky. "...Stupid girl," he mumbled under his breath. Alia tilted her head, trying to read his expression, but Reinhardt quickly masked whatever flicker of emotion had been there. His golden eyes turned cold again. "You sneak in here so carelessly. Aren't you afraid the temple guards will find you?" "Of course, I'm scared." She grinned. "But I hate the thought of you being trapped down here even more." Reinhardt raised an eyebrow. "You don't even know who I am. And you want to save me?" "Because... you look really lonely," Alia admitted, her voice soft. Her face flushed a little, and she coughed, quickly adding, "Also, my gut tells me you're not a bad person." He snorted but didn't refute it. Lonely, huh? She wasn't wrong. But Reinhardt knew better. This kind of "kindness" she offered — it was simple, innocent pity, nothing deeper. Her feelings toward him were no more than curiosity mixed with sympathy. He knew that. And yet— His gaze drifted back to the starlight vial resting in his palm, and a ridiculous thought crept into his mind. If she knew what I really am... would she still come back? Suddenly, his sharp hearing caught something — faint footsteps, approaching fast. "Someone's coming," Reinhardt warned, his voice low. Alia stiffened. "What?" "Temple guards," he growled, his golden eyes narrowing in irritation. "You need to leave. Now. If they find you here—" "But you—" "Go!" he barked, his voice carrying a forceful authority that brooked no argument. Alia hesitated for a fraction of a second before thrusting a small bundle of herbs into his hands. "These are for healing! I'll come back next time!" And with that, she spun around and bolted up the stone steps, her footsteps quickly fading. The dungeon returned to silence. Reinhardt stared at the spot where she had vanished for a long while before letting out a soft, exasperated sigh. "...Foolish girl." Lowering his head, he tightened his grip on the starlight vial. The cold glass trembled beneath his fingers as a web of crimson cracks spread across its surface. Dark, scale-like patterns rippled under his skin, and his golden irises darkened, slowly bleeding into red. A deep, primal force stirred within his chest, threatening to break free — the caged beast clawing at its restraints. "Looks like... time's running out." A low, guttural dragon's growl echoed through the darkness. And in the shadows, a pair of massive black wings slowly unfurled. End of Chapter One
