The kingdom's cities glow with enchanted lights. Trains powered by Aether crystals race between towering districts. Soldiers wear armor reinforced with magical steel. Weapons are forged with spells capable of destroying entire buildings.Asterra has convinced its people that magic is the foundation of civilization. But there is one kind of magic the Crown fears more than anything else.Static.An ancient form of storm magic carried in the blood of the Stormborn.Stormborn are people capable of commanding electricity, lightning, storms, and the invisible energy that flows through the world. Instead of killing Lyra, the lightning traveled through her body. The electricity moved across her skin without burning her. The lamps around the house exploded. Metal objects began floating. Windows shattered. And Lyra's eyes turned silver. Her mother knew immediately what she was.She also knew what would happen if anyone else found out.So she made Lyra a promise.Never use the magic.Never tell anyone.Never allow the Steelguard to discover what you are.For years, Lyra obeyed. She learned to suppress the electricity beneath her skin. She learned how to control her emotions so that anger would not cause lightning to erupt from her hands. She learned to hide whenever storms approached. But the magic never disappeared. It waited.Inside her.Growing stronger. Then, one night, everything changes.A mysterious Stormborn woman is murdered in the middle of Asterra's city. Before she dies, the woman looks directly at Lyra and tells her one word."Run."Lyra doesn't understand why.Until the Steelguard arrives. The soldiers recognize her power. And suddenly, the secret she has protected for twelve years is no longer a secret.Lyra runs. But she doesn't get far.Because waiting for her at the end of an alley is the most feared soldier in Asterra.Kael Draven.---THE IRON WOLFKael Draven is everything Lyra has been taught to fear.He is the youngest commander in the history of the Steelguard.Known throughout the kingdom as the Iron Wolf, Kael is feared by criminals, rebels, and enemy armies alike. The Girl who Carried the Thunder Part 1
The storm arrived before the warning bells. Lyra Veyne knew because the air changed. It always did. Long before the clouds gathered above Asterra, before the first drop of rain touched the rooftops, before thunder rolled across the mountains, Lyra could feel the storm moving through the world. It began as a pressure behind her eyes. Then came the tingling beneath her skin. Finally, the electricity. It crawled across her fingertips like invisible insects. Lyra shoved both hands deeper into the pockets of her coat. "Not tonight." She kept walking. Asterra glittered beneath the darkening evening sky. The capital was beautiful in a way that almost felt cruel. Towering buildings of black stone and glass rose above the older districts. Bridges made of steel and enchanted crystal connected the upper towers. Aether lamps illuminated the streets with pale blue light, while magical trains floated silently along elevated rails above the crowds. To travelers, Asterra was the greatest city in the world. To Lyra, it was a cage. She pulled her hood farther over her head. People hurried through the market streets, trying to reach home before the rain arrived. Merchants packed their goods beneath canvas covers. Children ran between stalls. Street musicians continued playing despite the growing wind. Everything looked ordinary. Safe. Lyra knew better. She had spent twelve years learning how to survive in this city. Don't attract attention. Don't ask questions. Don't use magic. And never let the Steelguard discover what you are. Her mother had taught her those rules. Her mother had taught her everything. How to hide her silver eyes when her emotions became too strong. How to breathe when lightning gathered beneath her skin. How to sleep through thunder. How to lie. Especially how to lie. Lyra had become very good at it. She had also become very good at pretending her mother was dead. That was the easiest lie of all. A flash of lightning illuminated the sky. For half a second, Lyra thought she saw a woman standing among the clouds. Long dark hair. Silver eyes. A bloodstained dress. Lyra stopped walking. The image disappeared. She blinked. Nothing. Only clouds. "You need sleep," she whispered. The dreams had returned recently. Every night, the same images. Her mother standing in a burning room. A door closing. Silver light. Blood on stone. And a voice whispering her name. Lyra. She shook her head. Not tonight. She continued toward home. She was three streets away when the screaming began. At first, she thought it was an argument. Then she heard someone shout. "Steelguard!" The market erupted into panic. People began running. Lyra turned toward the eastern square. Eight soldiers marched through the crowd. Black armor. Silver runes. Royal insignia. The Steelguard. Lyra's heart dropped. She immediately turned away. Walk. Don't run. Running attracted attention. She had taken only three steps when a woman collided with her. "Move!" Lyra caught herself against a wall. "What happened?" The woman didn't answer. She kept running. Then Lyra heard another scream. This one was different. Pain. She looked toward the square. A woman stood surrounded by soldiers. She was young. Maybe thirty. Her gray dress was torn, and blood covered her chest. One Steelguard soldier held a sword against her throat. Another aimed an Aether rifle. Lyra's stomach tightened. Then the woman lifted her head. Their eyes met. Silver. Lyra froze. Stormborn. Impossible. The woman stared at her as if she had been searching for her. Then she smiled. Not happily. Relieved. Her lips moved. Run. Lyra took one step backward. The soldier raised his rifle. An arrow struck the Stormborn woman's chest. She collapsed. Something inside Lyra broke. The world became silent. The crowd disappeared. The soldiers disappeared. All she could see was blood spreading across the woman's dress. Then electricity exploded beneath Lyra's skin. Every Aether lamp in the square flickered. One shattered. Then another. A soldier turned. "Stormborn!" Lyra ran. She didn't think. She didn't look back. She pushed through the crowd, hearing soldiers shouting behind her. "Stop!" "Don't let her escape!" "She's heading east!" Lyra sprinted into an alley. She knew these streets. She had spent years memorizing them. Left. Right. Across the bridge. Through the old market. She could lose them. She had to. A bolt of lightning struck somewhere nearby. The explosion shook the buildings. Lyra stumbled. Electricity danced across her fingertips. "No." She clenched her fists. Not here. Not now. She had spent twelve years hiding. She wasn't going to lose everything because of one moment. She turned another corner. Dead end. Lyra stopped. Stone walls surrounded her. Behind her came the sound of boots. Six soldiers entered the alley. Their leader stepped forward. He was a broad man with a scar across his cheek. "Remove your hood." Lyra said nothing. The soldier raised his weapon. "Stormborn. Remove your hood." Slowly, Lyra lowered it. Rain began falling. The soldier smiled. "Found you." Lyra raised her hands. "Don't come closer." He laughed. "You think you can threaten the Steelguard?" "No." Electricity sparked between her fingers. "I think I can threaten you." His smile disappeared. "Kill her." The first bolt struck before Lyra could think. White light filled the alley. The soldiers screamed. Lightning erupted from her hands and struck the stone walls, jumping between the soldiers. One fell. Then another. A third raised his rifle. Lyra screamed. The weapon exploded. She stumbled backward. The electricity inside her became stronger. Too strong. She couldn't control it. Her mother's voice returned. Control yourself, Lyra. Control the storm. Lyra closed her eyes. Breathe. One. Two. Three. The electricity faded. When she opened her eyes, the soldiers were lying unconscious on the ground. Smoke curled from their armor. Lyra stared at her hands. They were shaking. She had promised herself never to use her power again. Twelve years. Twelve years without anyone seeing. And now they knew. A slow footstep echoed from the entrance of the alley. Lyra looked up. A man stood in the rain. He wasn't wearing the standard Steelguard uniform. His armor was darker. Older. Black metal covered his chest and shoulders, engraved with thin silver lines. A silver wolf was stamped across his chest. Lyra knew that symbol. Everyone did. The Iron Wolf. Kael Draven. Commander of the Royal Steelguard. He stood silently. Rain ran down his face. Dark hair fell across his forehead. His gray eyes studied the unconscious soldiers. Then they moved to Lyra. Electricity still danced between her fingers. "You are Stormborn," he said. Lyra swallowed. "And you're the man they send when they don't want anyone to survive." Kael's expression didn't change. "Usually." His hand moved toward his sword. Lyra raised hers. Lightning flashed. Kael stopped. Neither moved. Then he said something she hadn't expected. "Don't be afraid." Lyra almost laughed. "You have got to be joking." "I'm not here to kill you." "You're Steelguard." "I know." "Then why aren't you arresting me?" Kael looked at the soldiers. "Because they're alive." Lyra glanced behind her. "They're unconscious." "Barely." He stepped forward. Lyra immediately raised her hand. "Stay there." Kael stopped. Something almost resembling amusement appeared in his eyes. "You've got courage." "I've got lightning." "That too." The electricity in her hand crackled louder. Kael looked at it carefully. His expression changed. Not fear. Recognition. "You shouldn't be able to control it." Lyra frowned. "You don't know anything about me." "I know enough." "Then you know I'm leaving." She turned. Kael spoke behind her. "Your mother is alive." Lyra stopped. Everything inside her went still. Slowly, she turned. "What did you say?" Kael watched her. "Your mother." Lyra's voice became quiet. "Don't." "Lyra—" "Don't say her name." "I wasn't going to." She stared at him. "How do you know who I am?" "I've been looking for you." "Why?" "Because someone else is looking for you too." Thunder rolled overhead. Lyra felt cold. "Who?" Kael reached into his coat. Lyra raised her hand. "Slowly." He pulled out a small silver crystal. It was no larger than a coin. The moment Lyra saw it, her body reacted. Electricity surged through her. The crystal began glowing. Lyra stared. "What is that?" "We found it on the woman in the square." "The Stormborn?" Kael nodded. "She wasn't an assassin." Lyra looked toward the square. "Then why did they kill her?" "Because she knew something." "What?" Kael looked directly at her. "Where the others are." "The others?" "The remaining Stormborn." Lyra's stomach tightened. "There are others?" "Very few." "Where?" "That's what we're trying to find out." Lyra laughed bitterly. "You're telling me the Steelguard is looking for Stormborn survivors?" "Not all of us." "What does that mean?" "It means the Crown doesn't know everything its own soldiers are doing." She studied him.
