Prologue
THE DEVIL OFFERS no mercy. However, I am no devil… not even close. The likes of me didn’t come from hell. Frankly, I’ve never been to hell, but I know for sure that I’ve been through worse. Although, there is no point in dwelling into that aspect of my life knowing the current situation that I am in. For I am a she-wolf—a paranormal being that used to be allied with the human race, but were now also considered as an enemy. Born and raised at Danderasia—a small country in the western part of the Monleite Kingdom, the land of werewolves and she-wolves. And soon enough—hopefully—will be the Alpha Luna of the Mystic Falls Pack. “D-Don’t kill me… p-please,” the man voiced out as he coughed out blood onto my direction, staining the white long coat that I was wearing. Numerous cuts were present on his face—evidence of the fight that we’ve shared not too long ago. Not before I pinned his back against the tall red spruce. “I’ll never s-step foot here e-ever again—just p-please, let m-me go…please … p-please…” he continued, eyes trembling in fear as his whole body was shaking. By the looks of it and the amount of blood he’s covered in, he’s gravely injured and must have broken a lot of bones already. Since he’s just a normal werewolf, it’ll take a lot of time before he fully heals himself. Blood dripped from his temple and from his mouth, making me aware that he’s losing a lot of blood already. There were also huge claw marks on his arm, stomach, and leg that he obtained from my pack warriors. He looked paler in just a matter of a minute and his breath had become more ragged. It took me a great ounce of self-control not to roll my eyes at what he just said. “You don’t have the luxury of bargaining with me, raider.” I spat, tightening my grip on his collar. He choked, gasping for air as I restricted that capacity from him. “You will die today, and it’ll serve as a warning to your beloved Alpha.” My hands and claws were covered in so much blood—from him, and from other rogues that we ended up killing after finding out that they were all lurking in our private lands—which is considered as a crime stated in Law of the Wolves and can be punishable by death. Of course, it’s up to us to decide on what kind of punishment would be fit for those trespassing our private lands. But if it came to a point where they would harm one of our packs, we wouldn’t think twice to eliminate all of them in return. Most of the rogues and raiders have already fled from the scene, but this man right before me was one of the few unlucky ones who didn’t get to escape from my warriors. The second that I got a hold of him, he knew that he wouldn’t be able to witness the sun shine on him the very next day. Scanning my eyes, most Weres laid on their pool of blood on the warm dirt in the forest. Metallic scent of blood infiltrated my senses due to the mixture of rogues, rival warriors, and even my own pack warriors’ bloods that was shed during the attack. I was expecting to only see rogues lurking around this part of our lands. However, warriors from a rival pack were also caught surveying the area. One of which was the man kneeling in front of me—slowly losing his life as I just watched him. Crouching down to level with his gaze, I muttered in distaste. “De inkta, de ilkan!” Blood for blood, it’s a common saying in the Monleiete Kingdom. In this part of the realm, when blood is shed, one must pay the same price. Guilty or … innocent, it didn’t matter. Life should be ceased the same way it was taken. It’s the nature of the wolves and most paranormal creatures in the realm in order to survive and prosper. Killing and violence is very common in this realm—to the point that it is considered a rightful way of protecting oneself from dangerous packs. The way his eyes reflected instant regret, he knew that he can’t be saved. Gone was the warrior who was begging me to spare his life earlier. Now, pure anger and dedication laced on his face. “T-This is just the s-start for y-you and your p-pack,” he coughed once more then spat mixtures of saliva and blood onto my face. And with all the energy he had left in his body, he added. “Myrr Frost, you will never become an Alpha—” I snapped his head before he could finish his words. “Son of a beast,” I murmured as soon as I decapitated his head then it rolled onto the ground… as if that wasn’t enough, I pierced my claws through his heart then crushed it with my wolf hands. Satisfied with what I did, I dropped his unbeating heart beside his lifeless body. Without looking back, I proceeded to wipe my bloodied hands onto my black slacks, then got a handful of my white coat to wipe over my face which he just spat blood on. I doubt that even helped since my white coat was drenched with blood as well, but I’m pretty sure I look like hell right now. Although, none of it mattered to me—my appearance should be the least of my concerns at the moment. “Myrr,” a familiar voice called. Turning around, I saw the Beta, a few feet away from me. He was leaning an elbow onto a tree while holding a sharp knife on his other hand. The man was taller and bulkier than most warriors in my pack. He seemed to be a man made of solid rock considering how hard and tensed his body always looked like. Just like me, it seemed as though his whole body was drowned in a pool of blood. There was a huge laceration from his cheeks down to his neck, but I could see that it was already healing by itself. The Beta smirked at me. “Was all that really necessary?” Rolling my eyes at him, I stood up in an upright position then decreased the proximity between us. I know him well enough to be aware that he’s teasing me for prolonging a kill. Our pack isn’t really considered a notorious one. We don’t kill whomever we just want to. Instead, we punish those who have wronged our pack—those who steal from us, those who pose a threat to us, and those who kill members of our pack. We only serve justice for our family. All our life, we abide the Law of the Wolves. Mystic Falls Pack followed the rules from the front page to the last page of the book. We never swayed from the norm. It was one of the many important things that kept our pack thriving and flourishing more than other packs. We stayed true to our nature, and we always cared for our allied packs as well. So whenever there are others who pose harm to us, we don’t think twice in defending our pack. “He deserved it,” I nonchalantly shrugged. A soft crunch was heard, I stepped on the raider’s heart that I took out earlier. I wiped my boots on the forest’s floor to get rid of the blood. Kirk eyed me as if he couldn’t believe what I was saying. “Wow, coming from someone who didn’t enjoy killings.” I snorted. “It’s been years, Beta. I was fifteen when I said that.” I could recall the time when we were younger, and I used to tell him that I could never harm anyone no matter how much they deserved it. But I was trained to defend and to attack–to kill Weres in order to uphold peace in our pack. “And you were what age when your mind changed?” Kirk’s long brown hair swayed gracefully when he slowly twisted his neck, trying to ease a knot that formed on his neck. I waited for a c***k sound before I replied. “Twenty four,” I blurted out. He let out a wry laugh. “See? That’s still fresh!” I rolled my eyes heavenwards. “That’s already two years ago, dimwit!” I pressed. “Are there any more lurkers and raiders nearby?” I inquire, dropping the nonsensical topic that he had brought up. As if on cue, Kirk straightened his posture and when he spoke, gone were the teasing tone he had earlier as it changed into a professional manner. “There were some who managed to escape our warriors, they didn’t pursue them when they fled across the neutral lands anymore,” he reported, gazing his eyes throughout the forest where some of our warriors were collecting bodies of our kind. “We were outnumbered, we didn’t have a chance against them considering there were also rogues that attacked us, but they retreated.” I could sense the confusion in Kirk’s voice, wondering why the raiders would retreat if they had the upperhand in this situation. We were low on warriors, yet they were the ones who fell back and escaped. “Are there any raiders alive that we can interrogate?” “We managed to eliminate four of them—considering the one you just killed. I believe there are no others who survived that we can interrogate now.” A rush of regret showered over me. I should have asked questions before I killed that man. It did seem like he knew something when he spat those harsh words towards me. “They’re planning something…” I mumbled under my breath, but enough for the Beta to hear. “It does seem like it. This wasn’t the first time that they infiltrated the pack, but it’s becoming more and more frequent these days.” Franco, the Delta, suddenly joined the two of us as he overheard our conversation. Apart from the three of us, he was the one who looked like he was barely wounded. He did come late since he wasn’t originally supposed to have a scheduled patrol in this area, but most importantly, he’s the best fighter here. Kirk and I nodded at the information. Franco had always been present in patrols so it’s clear that he’s aware of this occurrence. “According to the recent reports, they’ve been lurking around this area almost everyday, yet they all chose this particular day to attack?” “Do you think it’s because they knew that it’s—” “Mate Visitation day? How would they even know?” The Beta released a deep breath. “Maybe from another rival pack that is to attend the said event? I believe that an Alpha from an allied pack of them is joining later.” It dawned on me that I did miss that information. How could I even forget about such a crucial thing? It is given that there are a lot of things on my mind lately, but that shouldn’t hinder me from keeping track of vital information in regards to the pack. “I’ll keep that in mind later on. For now, it is best to assume that the raiders are planning something against us. About what exactly? that is something we need to know.” I mentioned staring back at Kirk, the cut on his face almost done stitching up close on its own. “We need to make a full report on this incident when we get back. We need to tie some pieces together.” I added as I averted my eyes to Franco. “Yes, Myrr.” They both answered in unison and then nodded. Despite the fact that they are considered to be in higher rank than me, they still show me respect. “How many did we lose?” I asked, my throat immediately constricted. This is the part that I hated the most whenever we were out to defend our lands from rogues and raiders. Contrary to popular’s belief—or human’s belief rather—werewolves aren’t necessarily immortal. We can consistently heal wounds at an accelerated rate, but we can also be killed in many ways. The most effective are silver bullets, mercury, decapitating our head or our hearts then burning the entire body to ashes. If any of these were used to harm us—there’s a possible chance that we wouldn’t live to see another day. “Three, Myrr,” Kirk informed. “Gather their bodies back to our pack and we will perform a funeral rites to these brave warriors of our pack.” Kirk gulped, and even without saying a word—I already had an inkling why he seemed to be anxious. “Who is it?” I questioned, wanting an answer as soon as possible. “Myrr…” he said in a warning tone. But my emotions had already gotten the best of me. “No. No. No! It’s R-Rachelle, isn’t it?” The Beta could only nod as a response, afraid to blurt out the words that I didn’t want to hear. “Take me to her!” I yelled, gathering the other pack warrior’s attention who were busy collecting the dead bodies that have scattered in our lands. “Now!” I added when Kirk was immobilized in his place. It took him a total of five seconds before walking to the direction where Rachelle was located. I was mentally bracing myself for the impact of what I’m about to see. Clutching a hand on top of my chest, my blood stained shirt became more drenched due to my bloodied hand. But I paid no attention to it. I could be covered in a hefty amount of blood, but that doesn’t compare to what I was seeing right before my eyes. “R-Rachelle,” I choked. The tears were caught in my throat, and I’m afraid that the second I mutter another word, I’ll weep in front of my Beta and pack warriors. My heart sank at the sight of Rachelle’s lifeless body that laid on the forest grounds. Other pack warriors were kind enough to cover their colleagues’ bodies with a sheet of black cloth. Even under that, I already knew which was Rachelle’s. She was laid in between the other lifeless werewolf warriors from my pack. I remember their names in the back of my head—Tom and Kevin. All three of them were outstanding warriors… I was so engrossed with fighting with a raider that I didn’t realize that my warriors were badly hurt at the same time. Everything just happened way too fast. “Myrr,” Kirk’s mellow tone anchored me to the reality as I abruptly kneeled beside Rachelle’s unmoving body. I couldn’t feel pain on my knees as I hit the rough ground. All the pain seemed to settle on my heart—something that would be hard to shrug off. The trembling of my hands was so extreme that I couldn’t get a grip of myself. The rapid beating of my heart echoing in my ears, and it's all that I can hear. It's like my brain forgot to function. As an Alpha Luna-in-training, I was told to never wear my emotions on my sleeves. I have been successful in keeping my emotions at bay, but this one is an exemption. No, I still couldn't believe my eyes. This is a harsh reminder to me that I can never save anyone. It doesn't matter if I trained or if I have Alpha blood running through my veinsㅡI'm no divine, I can't save everyone even if I wanted to. Rachelle, a pack warrior, and just the same age as my younger sister, was like a real sister to me. I considered her as family. We trained together. She helped me enhance my she-wolf abilities, and would brawl with me whenever I have a lot of things running in my mind. Seeing her in this state was something I never imagined throughout all the years we shared together. It was a punch in the gut—a factor to be considered why I shouldn’t be fit to take over the Alpha title that I longed for years and years. Whenever we lose warriors during attacks, the same sense of disgrace and guilt would loom over me… slowly eating me whole. “This is my f-fault,” I softly uttered, my voice breaking as tears fell down through my cheeks. “I was in charge of the defense. If only we were careful… If only I didn’t lose her out of my sight—” A warm hand tapped my back, causing me to halt. I didn’t need to look back to know that it was Kirk; offering comfort to me knowing how much I treasured Rachelle. “This isn’t your fault, Myrr. None of this was ever your fault. I was told by other warriors that Rachelle, along with Tom and Kevin, came across the Alpha of the raiders. Unfortunately, they were no match for him.” Harshly, I wiped the tears that streamed down my face and gulped down the cries that wanted to escape my mouth. “I need to see that son of a beast!” I yelled, gripping tightly on the sheet that covered Rachelle’s body. “He needs to pay for what he did!” How am I going to tell Rachelle’s family that she’s no longer here with me—with us? Before Kirk could even blurt out his sentiments, Franco butted in, his face contorted in concern. “I apologize for the intrusion, Luna, but you need to go now.” Kirk and I averted our gaze to the Delta. “The Mate Visitation is only fifteen minutes away.” Well, f***k! Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse—I completely forgot about an important event today!
