I watch Meimi leave through the small window set into the kitchen door. She walks off into the labyrinth of old brick buildings surrounding the main chemical plant. I still hate to see her depart. It’s wrong somehow.
Miss Edith steps up behind me. “Want directions to Meimi’s lab?”
I turn around. “Very much.”
She purses her wrinkled lips. “Do you want some breakfast first?”
“No, thank you.” My sentient can keep me fed for days at a time, not that I’ll explain that to Miss Edith. “Just directions.”
