The university president sat alone in his luxurious office, awaiting the top of the hour when he would move to an ornate meeting room down the hall and face the school’s board of trustees.
In academia, a leader can survive an occasional lapse of judgement or a bad outcome to a pretty good decision. If you’re beloved and have built a bank of respect and admiration, you can dodge the assassins when they start circling to chop off your head. However, if the campus and community don’t love, trust or respect you, your margin for error is very tiny. And if you make the mistake of not promptly firing a losing football coach or prancing your naked ass in a porn video for all the world to see, there is no safety net.
