They didn’t speak much after the ambush.
The weight of everything pressed down on them as they moved through the quieter districts. The city was waking up now — distant traffic, early pedestrians, normal life continuing without knowing what had happened in the shadows.
Kai leaned against the railing of an old bridge as they stopped. The river below moved slowly, reflecting the pale morning light.
“So… this is it?” Kai asked.
Ren stood beside him, watching the horizon.
“This is where we decide.”
Mira crossed her arms. “If we stay, they’ll keep coming.”
Kai looked down at the pendant.
“And if we leave?”
Ren answered quietly. “We find answers.”
Kai sighed.
“A few hours ago, my biggest concern was paying rent. Now I’m running from hunters and learning about destroyed kingdoms.”
Mira smiled slightly. “Life changes fast.”
Kai looked at both of them.
Strangers not long ago. Now, somehow, they were the only people he could rely on.
“You really think there’s something outside the city?” he asked.
Ren nodded.
“The truth about Ashara. About the pendant. About why you were chosen.”
Kai hesitated.
Chosen.
That word still felt strange.
But deep down, he knew he couldn’t ignore this anymore. The pendant pulsed faintly, as if agreeing.
He exhaled slowly.
“Alright.”
Ren gave a small nod.
“We leave tonight.”
Mira stepped closer to the railing.
“Once we leave, there’s no turning back.”
Kai looked at the horizon, where the city faded into distant hills.
He felt nervous.
Excited.
And slightly terrified.
“Yeah,” he said quietly.
“I figured.”
The wind moved gently across the bridge, carrying the first feeling of something new. Beyond the city, danger waited.
But so did answers.
Kai adjusted his jacket, feeling the weight of the pendant against his chest.
His old life was already behind him.
And as the sun rose higher, they stood there quietly — three strangers bound by something bigger than any of them understood.
The journey had officially begun.
And this time… there was no going back.
