Is this even the beginning?
Hey, names Lance Palmer, private detective, only 4 cases left open since '93. This story starts with a murder, at least my part. It happened some months ago, people saw it, but there weren't any leads, no fingerprints, no recordings, not even one soul managed to watch the killer do it. The city's best detectives were on the case, but no one managed to find a single clue that would lead to anything. I didn't want to get involved in this at first, I kept constant watch for news, waiting for a turn to act when they found something, but that never happened, the case? left open to rot in the hell of every other case not a single soul manages to solve, that was a sad day for the city. People forgot about it, leaving only uninterested people. I was once part of that collective, some nights I couldn't sleep reviewing it again and again in my head: The victim was a female, approximately of 34 years of age, green eyes and red hair. She had exactly 5 stab wounds in each extremity, for a total of 20, across her chest there was a riddle which went like this: "I can bring tears to your eyes; resurrect the dead, make you smile, and reverse time. I form in an instant but I last a life time. What am I?", although the fatal wound appears to be a broken neck, undetermined in which order the lacerations were made. And the last piece of information, where was the body found? Well, There was an ongoing construction of the biggest skyscraper in the city, it was called "The Rogers memorial building", construction was halted after the finding, but it was recently resumed. The case seemed impossible to solve, so I ended leaving it behind like everyone else, just kept solving the same old boring thing day after day, I had entered a routine, although I technically did a long time ago, there were just no interesting things to find. And I know you are wondering, how did I get involved in this? Well, I remember being it a Sunday morning, 8 A.M, just woken up, I managed to make myself a simple breakfast of eggs and toast when I heard the indistinguishable sound of a letter sliding under my door. I got up and walked, after picking it up I noticed it had a seal with a weird inscription, it had two letters: "Z.R.", no idea to this day what they mean. I got back to my breakfast whilst reading the letter, when I finished it I was surprised, from the excitement I propelled my body backwards and I almost fell down from my chair. Apparently I was going to be remembered as the detective who managed to solve and unsolvable murder, and that was pretty damn exhilarating.  The letter went like this: I don't know if you will take me seriously, I can't tell you much except I know who you are, don't worry, you probably don't know me. What I can tell you is that I have found a possible clue that could help us solve the "Rogers murder". the only problem is that I'm being followed, as I write this letter I understand that the danger is getting closer and closer, so that means that I can't tell you where to meet, but remember: True heretics expect mortal organs, reality gruesomely utters effect. I hope you are able to understand. J. PS: Burning bridges often allows us to advance. Almost immediately getting up from my chair with the note in hand, I started walking to the closest window in my apartment, I maneuvered through piles of all my cases, left there for future reference, or just to relieve past glories. Managing to avoid making a mess I got to the window, opening the blinds permitted the light to enter, I got dazzled, when my eyes got accustomed I opened them once again and retrieved the note from my left hand, I put it in the window hoping that burning bridges referred to a secret message in the sun. My eyes went through the whole thing but nothing got revealed except some unimportant stains in the paper.  I got close to giving up, for some reason I couldn't understand what it everything meant, so I decided to re-read the letter, near the end something got my attention, it was the weird phrase at the end, it certainly didn't make any sense, not with the context of the letter, nor with the way it was constructed. For some reason it reminded me of an old book that I stopped using since 2006. I started walking again, only this time it was towards the bookcase, when I got to it I finally started looking for the "Opening doors, a book for finding secret messages". It took me a while, but I found it in the second shelf crammed between all the others, when I took it out I couldn't help but notice how dusty it got, I blew in it to help me clean it a little and I opened it. Got to the index in the end and started examining it trying to find the entry. It didn't took me long, before I abandoned it I practically memorized it, so I kind of knew what I was looking for. My finger flipped through the pages, my heart started accelerating thanks to the excitement, when I got to page 127 the whole world stopped, my veins were pounding blood so fast I was feeling kind of dizzy, so I took a step backwards, my gravity center changed in less than a second, my head started turning and I could see the floor getting closer, my eyes closed as I braced for the impact, as a reflex my hands started closing the book, but my finger was still inside.  A loud thud was heard as I hit the floor, all of my cases flew everywhere,*Damn it!*I exclaimed as I got up, thanks to my finger the page didn't get lost so I started reading it, Bingo. I started reading the phrase again, I pulled out my cellphone with the notepad and started writing the first letter of every word until I formed the phrase "The morgue", that was just part of the mystery though, because there were at least 15 different morgues in the city, so I walked once again through the apartment, this time being extra careful to avoid tripping again with the cases. I the other side of the table were I was having breakfast was my laptop, I started looking through the options, I thought I had no way of knowing which one it was until I remembered the seal in the letter, so I filtered the options to only include options with Z. R., only one option popped up "Zil Run Morgue" definitely a weird name but I didn't question it.  With that part done only one part remained, if the person was indeed being followed, maybe the PS meant that I should burn the evidence, so I grabbed the letter and the envelope with everything, got my lighter from my pocket and lighted them on fire, I threw it in my metal trash bin and watched as it burned, my apartment didn't have a smoke alarm, so I didn't have to worry about that. It took a few minutes, but the fire finally died out, and I noticed a tiny piece of a material that didn't burn out, it only said "See you in 2 hours", I chuckled as I knew I was a worthy detective. I walked to the counter near my door and grabbed my keys and wallet, I put my trench coat on and dispersed all of my items through the different pockets, I opened the door and closed my three locks. I started walking down the stairs with a smile in my face, would this finally be my chance to redeem myself?
