The emergency alarm echoed across the flight deck, making clear-headed thinking difficult. The lights had dimmed to battle mode, so everything and everyone had a soft amber glow and the screens at every station were brighter.
“What do I do, sir?” yelled Gears, snapping Nick back into reality.
“Sir, the Alliance fleet has gone to emergency FTL! They have exited the system ahead of the wave,” the Kid shouted from his station.
Nick looked at his B screen and saw that the space/time displacement wave seemed to have slowed. It took several seconds for this change to register as significant. “Gears! All of you, be quiet and look at the screen! And shut off that alarm!”
