Present Day (2025)
"Get rid of the Loser!" Lana laughs as she nudges me in front of the counter.
Me and Lana have been friends since high school. Growing up in a small town like Redding, Tennessee means that everyone knows everyone. There's only two restaurants in the town's center and Big Al's is where we've both worked the past two years after graduation.
"I told you, Tanner is out of the picture!" I roll my eyes playfully and I pick up table four's dirty plates.
"Tell him that" She gestures towards the door where my ex is walking in.
I try to hide but unfortunately he catches up to me before I can. Great, just great.
"What are you doing here?!" I feel my face get crimson red and my blood starts to boil. Flashbacks of the the lying, the cheating, the abuse, it all floods back and I can barely contain my temper.
"Chill! I want to talk." he says calmly, which makes me ever angrier.
The bell rings as the door flies open but I'm too preoccupied with Tanner to notice the customer.
"I don't want to talk to you!" I'm raising my voice now, drawing the attention of the few patrons in the diner.
Tanner gets closer to me, his expression changing. The same look he used to get when he'd get angry and hurt me.
"I SAID--" He starts but is interrupted by the customer who just walked in.
"If she said she doesn't want to talk, she doesn't want to talk, take the hint." The handsome man interjects, taking everyone by surprise.
I stare at this stranger in disbelief. This is someone I've never seen in Redding before but I sure wish I had. He's tall and tanned and brunette. Something about his eyes are alluring, pulling you in, willingly wanting to be sucked into his orbit. We all stare at him until Tanner breaks the silence, trying to look like a tough guy, even though we all can clearly see that this mysterious guy could take him if he wanted.
"Who the hell are you?!" Tanner eyes him up and down.
"A guy who respects women's wishes." He stands his ground with his hands in his jacket pockets.
I look back at Lana who is swooning over this guy. I guess it's not just me.
The mystery man looks at me with a half smile as if he can hear the thoughts in my head.
"Walk outside with me." He firmly grabs Tanner's shirt and damn near drags him outside.
Me and Lana look at each other with our mouths open, in shock.
When the mystery man comes back in less than a minute later, he sits at a stool in front of me.
"May I order?" He asks with a smile, showing his pearly white teeth.
"Well, wait a minute. What did you do or say to Tanner?" I ask, flabbergasted.
"What matters is he's gone." He points to the specialty burger on the menu.
"Ok...." I trail off and start to walk away but he grabs my hand which literally causes a spark of electricity to shock me and I jump at his touch.
"You felt that?" He asks with wide eyes.
"Of course I did..." I begin to blush and run the back of my neck, awkwardly.
"Lucas." He looks at me with that bright smile again.
"Savannah."
