Chapter 1: Same As Ever
Brooke Lawrence Noland woke up early in the morning as usual to train her body in combat. She had always been this tough since her girlhood. Every morning she would go to her training room and train in combat for hours and exercise a lot. Her body was a perfectly shaped weapon which didn't go along with her innocent cute round face with chubby cheeks, big eyes, heart-shaped lips and waist-length light brown hair which fell on her face. She could easily have any man she'd ever want, but that never happened. Brooke had a heart of ice when it came to her love life. She had always been single and never even thought about it once. She built these walls around her not because she was afraid of being hurt, she was afraid of being betrayed or abandoned. The fear of abandonment came from her family. They abandoned her when she was just a kid and the fear of betrayal came from a person whom she thought was her best friend. Brooke had always been an over thinker. She'd always think of the worst possible thing that could happen in any situation and prepare herself beforehand, even though this tactic was handy but always being cynical had kind of permanently altered her way of thinking. She had the ability to portray herself so perfectly that nobody could guess how hurt or how sad she actually was. Opening up to someone was something she wouldn't even imagine herself doing anytime soon. She was a friend of many but only considered three as her friends Hayden, Avery and Norissa. Avery was a childhood friend. Norissa and Hayden were the only ones whom she had gotten close with after Avery. "Catch it!" Brooke turned out quicker than a second and caught the glove Hayden threw towards her before it fell on the ground "Good catch" Hayden complimented, winking at her "Tell me something I don't know" "Like what? What is it that you admit not knowing, since you already know everything Ms.know it all?" He replied sarcastically. "Like the answer to the question. Why are you even awake at this hour other than to annoy me?" Brooke snapped while picking up the combat knives from her table and placing them in her belt pocket. "You answered the question yourself" he said playfully. Brooke sighed and rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Get out of here and stop disturbing me before you walk out of here with broken bones in your already weak body" "Ouch" he exclaimed and placed his hand on his heart, "that hurts….Or you could be the one with broken bones today" he continued while smirking, "Haha! You really need a reality check, your delusions are getting seriously concerning", she laughed and started walking towards Hayden. "Let's find out, shall we?" He he Brooke was now standing right in front of him at a very small distance, she looked up to him straight in the eye, turned her annoyed face into a mocking one, put her hands in the fighting position while Hayden was still standing straight with his hands in his pockets, thinking he had really convinced Brooke to a fight when a hard kick landed on his crotch making him snap out of his thoughts and almost scream in pain, he stood there immobilized, his mouth was still open in horror when he dropped slowly to his knees, Brooke let out a burst of laughter and placed a green pill in his mouth and closed it with her hands, She wore her boots while Hayden's expression turn back to normal, he let out a breath of relief and shouted at her "What the hell is wrong with you? Are you out of your mind?" "Hope that was enough to teach you a good memorable lesson of not biting more than you could swallow" she laughed "Goodbye Hayden, better luck next time" and exited, from the room before hearing Hayden shout more. She was already behind her daily schedule so she hurried towards the forest where the knife throwing range was. Brooke lived in a house really close to the Forest and had made the knife throwing ranges herself. She had won this house as a reward for winning the vampire knife throwing league, beating dozens of men and was known as the best knife thrower in the kingdom. The house was quite big, so she decided to let her friends stay there as well. She was walking towards the range when she saw something gleaming under the dim sunlight, Brooke couldn't resist herself and walked towards the gleaming silver she picked it up carefully after looking around for any traps nearby and took off it's deep red case, it was a glistening silver dagger, it's size was smaller than her hand but it's sharpness looked like it could pierce through any human body in one go, the handle of dagger had very delicate ancient silver artwork and a gorgeous deep red ruby encrusted in it. It was the most beautiful dagger Brooke had ever seen, she knew that only royalty could have this kind of weapons and no shop can sell them, so she couldn't resist her urge to keep the dagger, nobody except her knew that she had a hobby of collecting dangerous artifacts like this. She decided to make this one her most prized dagger of her collection, put the dagger back in its case and kept it in her pocket, she reached the range and pulled her newest dagger out for test, she aimed for the bulls eye and threw it, to her content the dagger pierced through the wood as expected, "Even though the day started off as annoying, it has certainly gotten a lot better," she said to herself, smiling. Back at home: "You're an uncivilized and imbecile creature! I swear I will not let you get away with this!" Hayden continued shouting, even after Brooke had left. After a few moments he took to calm himself, he went straight to the kitchen and found Avery with her morning face and long brown hair tied up in a messy bun and Norissa with her usual resting annoyed face and short black hair sitting there. They both stared at him with an annoyed expression "Look who it is" Avery said, rolling her eyes. "An i***t who woke us both up this early", Norissa replied. "I'll see how calmly you react when you get ruthlessly kicked in the wrong places" Hayden snapped back. "It seems that the kick in your balls has affected your brain quite….painfully" Avery said sarcastically, "For your information, neither we have balls nor a pea-sized brain. That is exactly what you get when you mess up Brooke's routine", Norissa replied and started making her breakfast Hayden, who was furious, took a packet of blood from the freezer, went marching towards his room and closed the door with a loud thud. "He has gone berserk" Norissa exclaimed. "Not his fault though…..anyone who suffers that much pain would take time to handle it" Avery made a hissing sound and they both laughed at their conversation. The breakfast was almost ready, when Brooke walked in and took off her boots and belt, "Smells wonderful. What have you both cooked?" She asked "Oh look who finally decided to join us!" Norissa exclaimed "Good timing, it's just bacon and ham and eggs and the drink of your choice" Avery replied "I'm quite hungry…where's Hayden though?" Brooke asked "You really can't decide can you?" Norissa asked staring directly in Brooke's eye's "Decide what?" "You knocked the balls out of him this morning and now you want to know where he is?" She said "I have decided that I want to know where he is" Brooke replied "He's in his room of course, still furious" Norissa replied sighing "I couldn't help myself. He made me do it. Avery, can you ask him to come out for breakfast?" Brooke said "Sure" said Avery and went to knock his room, "Hayden, the breakfast is ready we're waiting for you to start" "I'll eat it later" Hayden replied form the other side of the door "It'll get cold, I made your favorite don't be stubborn!" Avery argued and finally convinced him to come out of his room. Norissa and Brooke set the table, Avery joined them followed by Hayden, his expression clearly turned cold when he saw Brooke, she understood that he was still really mad. All four of them sat quietly on the table eating their breakfast "Can you pass me the ball- I mean the eggs Norissa?" Avery broke the awkward silence, Hayden looked up with a deadly stare and kept eating and all the three others burst out laughter, "Oh come on Hayden get over it" Norissa turned to him "She owes me" Hayden replied coldly looking at Brooke "What do I owe you?" She replied "An apology" "But I did give you the painkiller" "After you kicked me" "Because- " Brooke was about to argue when she stopped mid sentence "You know what I'll apologize" she continued All three sets of eyes looked at her in utter surprise, it was the first ever Brooke had ever agreed to apologize, it wasn't her nature to apologize in words so she always made up for her mistakes by other ways such as spending quality time or giving a present or act of service. "I apologize" Brooke continued "that I gave you the painkiller, I should've let you suffer more because your annoying ass deserves it" she finished speaking "As expected" Avery said Norissa and Hayden's mouths formed an "O" due to the unexpected turn of event, nobody said anything while Brooke got up and went towards her room "The breakfast was really good" she complimented and smirked at Hayden before leaving. At the castle: The heir of the throne, Tristan Harper Sage had just woken up from his deep sleep after spending his whole night in the forest hunting for animals, he realized he hadn't even taken his gear off from last night entirely before falling in slumber, it was time almost time for breakfast so he got up and went to change his attire, halfway taking off his gear he noticed that something was missing, he quickly looked through his stuff and realized that his most precious dagger that was his most treasured and beloved asset was missing and nowhere to be found.
