Chapter One
ANN I grabbed at the cool sheets beneath my fingers as I awakened from my little nap. It was the weekend, and I had decided to spend it with Chris, my boyfriend. I smiled to myself as I thought about my boyfriend. I had gotten my new job about three weeks ago and everything had been hectic for me. It hadn't been easy at all for me, but Chris had remained patient and understanding. We had decided to spend the weekend together, have a picnic or visit anywhere we liked. I loved the fact that we hadn't planned the weekend in detail, which made it all the more interesting. Most times, I just felt like the heavens had blessed me with a man like him. We both had good and well-paying jobs and so money wasn't an issue. My phone rang. I rolled over to the side of my bed. Bethany. My best friend and coworker. "Hello Beth." I said, placing the phone to my ear. "Hi babe. Listen, I know we agreed to go shopping today, before you meet up with Chris, but I have to cancel." her voice sounded really different and distant. I frowned at that. "Beth, are you okay?" I asked, getting worried. "Yes, I'm fine. I just have things to do." "Okay, maybe I can come around when I'm done shopping. I can catch up with Chr_" "Ann, I said I'm okay. Don't come. Remember Chris would not like you keeping him waiting." she said, cutting me off. There was shuffling in the background, and before I could say anything, she hung up. Huh? That was odd.. We had already planned to get those clothes and gift items for my sister's wedding. We had even decided to go today, so I can spend some time with Chris. Chris. He hadn't even called me today. I dialed his number and waited for it to ring. It rang and went into voicemail. Maybe he was busy. I sighed and prepared to shower. Even if Beth didn't want me to check up on her, I would. She is my best friend after all. It didn't take long for me to shower and get dressed. In the shower, I had decided not to go shopping. It would have to wait until the following week, just before the wedding. I wasn't good at picking gifts. That was Beth's job, and she would be the one handling it. I picked up my car keys and rushed to my car. If Beth was sick, she needed someone close, if she needed to be in the hospital. I didn't even bother eating. I would go to Bethany's favorite pastry shop just close to her house and get her some pastries. Leave Beth to consume anything with chocolate in it. I tried dialing Chris's number again but it still went to voicemail. I needed to tell him I would be spending the day with Bethany and catch up with him later that evening. I got to my car, threw my purse in, and proceeded to get into the driver's seat. I placed my phone on my lap as I turned on the ignition. I wasn't paying attention to my surroundings, too busy thinking of Chris and Bethany. I put the car in reverse and looked into the rear view mirror, just in time to hit the breaks and stop the car in time. I almost hit someone. A man. I could only see his back as he stopped for a few nano seconds before walking away. I immediately jumped from the car and tried calling out an apology to him. But all I got was a quick wave as he strode into the huge apartment complex. Oh dear. Getting back into the car, I cursed a little. My day wasn't exactly going the way I planned. "Rich snob, he could have, at least, let me apologize. Instead of waving me off and making me feel worse," I said to myself. My ego was a little bit bruised. I started my car and continued my journey. This time, I was careful, and paid a lot of attention to my surroundings. I stopped at the shop and got Bethany some pastries, basically a mix of everything. And a huge cup of coffee with enough cream for five people. Beth really needed to work on her sweet tooth. Placing the goodies in the back seat of my car, I searched for my phone to call Chris again but couldn't find it. I didn't have the energy to rummage through my purse or check the floor of the car, so I left it. I will call him later. Right now, I needed to get to Beth. Her house was just on the corner from the shop, so it didn't take up to three minutes before I pulled into her street. And what greeted me came as a shock. COLTON That woman almost ran over me. I needed to get my s**t together. I had just gotten off a long flight which had consisted of different zoom meetings and not a single moment's rest. I was hardly ever around in my penthouse, except at night, during weekdays. And I always leave very early the next morning. My weekends were spent at the office, where I was always buried at work. There was a spare room in my office, equipped with a bed, and a closet, stacked with clothes. I should have stayed there. I had almost gotten to the entrance when I remembered the files I had left in my car. I had let my driver get down at his home to tend to his wife who had just given birth. So I drove myself back here. A shiny object caught my eye, just close to where the woman had almost hit me. So, I walked over to where the object was. It was her phone. I picked it up and put it in my pocket, deciding to give it to the receptionist in the building. I then walked over to my car and grabbed the files. This weekend which I had finally decided to spend at my penthouse, I had almost gotten run over. I guess my guardian angel had had enough of me and wanted me gone. It had been exactly four weeks since I had left on my business trip, to open up my company's fourth branch in London. Getting into the building, the receptionist was nowhere to be found. It was the pounding headache I had that got me moving to the private lift without bothering to wait around for her. I got into the private lift for the penthouse, and sighed as it closed. I loved the absolute bliss of having things all to yourself. It gave me time to close my eyes and relax, before I got to my floor. I sighed again as the lift stopped at the little hallway meant for the penthouse. There were actually two penthouses in this building but I had never seen the owner of the second one. And it was better that way. I unlocked my door and walked inside, satisfied at the neatness. I placed the phone, file, and laptop bag I was holding on the table and walked over to my room. Walking into the closet, I carefully removed my clothes, and placed them where the cleaner would see them. I walked out, naked and proud, into the huge bathroom and set the shower on low. As I felt the warm water run down my body, I closed my eyes again and couldn't help remembering the woman who had almost run over me. I had actually seen her before she got into the car, and had been on my way to talk to her, when she almost knocked me into the other world. I laughed at my own silly joke. I had been watching her from my car, struggling with her phone and cursing at the poor device. She looked really stern and yet sexy at the same time. I wouldn't want to be on that phone right now. Her hair was a rich coffee brown with little highlights here and there. She had worn a very short leather skirt, with a big button-down shirt. And on her feet, she wore some kinds of boots. But it hadn't been her boots that caught my attention. It was her legs, toned like she never skipped leg day. She wasn't very rounded on the bottom or on the chest area. In fact, she was slim and tall, not exactly the kind of woman I was usually attracted to. But for some reason, she stirred something in me. And I hoped to the heavens, that she stayed in this building. I never had to approach a woman before, but I would make an exception for this one. I guessed I could use her phone as an excuse. It was only a matter of time until the phone rang. Considering how hard I was, I had to act fast. I looked down at myself and laughed again. I hadn't even talked to this woman and I was already reacting like that. Hah! This might not end well. Getting out of the shower, my erection far from subsiding, I pulled on loose shorts and walked over to the bed. The headache was blinding at this point, so I sprawled on the bed and closed my eyes. I needed this sleep.
