Chapter 1: The Pregnant Luna's Rejection
"I, Alpha Jax of the Frost-Paw Pack, hereby reject you, Lyra, as my mate and future Luna."
The words cut through the suffocating silence of the grand cathedral like jagged iron.
Lyra stood frozen on the marble altar, her fingers digging into the stems of her white bridal roses until the thorns bit deep into her palms. Fresh blood welled against her pale skin, dripping onto the pristine lace of her wedding gown. A cold, nauseating shock clawed up her throat, threatening to choke her where she stood.
She looked up into the icy blue eyes of her betrothed, searching his handsome, sculpted face for a sliver of hesitation. There was none. Only a cruel, mocking sneer.
"Jax..." Her voice cracked, barely audible over the sudden, violent murmurs cascading through the pews. Over two hundred pack elders, high-ranking warriors, and noble guests sat in judgment, their collective gazes burning into her like brandings. "What are you doing? The sacred vows... the pack bond..."
"The ceremony is over, Lyra," Jax said, his voice ringing with absolute, ruthless finality. He didn't just step back; he turned his back on her entirely.
With deliberate slowness, he reached out and wrapped his thick arm around the waist of her stepsister, Brenda.
Brenda wore a clinging crimson silk dress that left little to the imagination. Her golden wolf eyes gleamed with pure, sadistic triumph as she molded her soft body flush against Jax’s side. She ran a manicured hand over her own flat stomach, purring low enough for the front row to hear.
"Jax belongs to a real female now, sister," Brenda taunted, her voice dripping with poisonous sweetness across the sanctuary. "A true, high-blooded wolf who can give him powerful heirs—not a wolfless, defective human who brings nothing but shame to the Beta line."
Jax sneered, pulling Brenda closer as his large hand dropped to cup her hip. "She is carrying my pup, Lyra. My true bloodline. And you? You're nothing but a barren, useless burden. By pack law and sacred tradition, a female without a wolf cannot sit beside an Alpha. You are discarded."
Lyra’s breath hitched violently. Her hand instinctively dropped, pressing flat against her lower abdomen beneath the heavy silk of her dress.
A sharp, bitter agony flared in her chest, so intense it made her teeth ache. She wanted to scream until her lungs bled. She wanted to tear off her veil and hurl the silver healer’s charm she kept hidden in her corset straight into his arrogant face.
"I am not barren, you blind fool," she thought, her stomach twisting into a sickening knot. "I am three weeks pregnant with your child."
She had carried the silver charm into the cathedral today, trembling with nervous joy, planning to press his hand to her belly right after the high priest sealed their union. But looking at Jax holding her stepsister, looking at her stepmother Vanya laughing spitefully from the front pew, the truth froze in her throat.
If she revealed the pregnancy now, she wouldn't be saved. Vanya would ensure the baby died in the womb before nightfall, just as Vanya had poisoned her childhood meals with wolfsbane tea to keep her wolf dormant and weak. Revealing her child to these monsters was a death sentence.
"Strip her of the silver family ring," Jax commanded, turning to his towering enforcement guards. "Drive this wolfless leach to the border. If she steps foot on Frost-Paw territory again, tear her apart."
Two massive, heavily muscled guards surged up the altar steps. Their thick, clawed hands slammed down onto her bare shoulders, ripping the delicate lace sleeves of her wedding dress and dragging her brutally toward the marble stairs.
"Get your filthy hands off me!" Lyra spat, her silver-flecked eyes flashing with unyielding, wild fury. She kicked back hard, her heavy heel catching one guard in the shin, but their grip remained like iron vice grips, bruising her delicate skin.
"Drag the stray out!" Vanya shouted from her seat, her painted lips curled into a vicious grin. "Feed her to the rogues at the wall!"
BANG!
The massive, ancient oak doors of the cathedral shattered inward, turning into a deadly storm of flying wood splinters and iron rivets.
A wave of crushing, suffocating aura roared into the sanctuary like a physical wall of iron. The air pressure plunged instantly, snapping the heavy stone pillars near the entrance with violent cracks. Stained-glass windows shattered into millions of colored shards, raining down upon the shrieking guests as the temperature plummeted, freezing the holy water in the stone basins into solid blocks of ice.
Every wolf in the room—including Alpha Jax—staggered. Their knees buckled under the sheer, absolute weight of an ancient, predatory command. Jax gasped out loud, his face contorting in agony as he was slammed down onto the marble floor, his teeth grinding together as he fought against the invisible force crushing his spine.
Through the rising dust and freezing mist, a towering figure stepped over the ruined threshold.
He moved with the lethal, silent grace of an apex killer, clad in heavy dark steel armor beneath a broad black wolfskin mantle that swept the floor.
King Valerius. The ruthless, blood-soaked Alpha tyrant of Bloodfang Citadel.
A deadly, terrifying silence fell over the cathedral. Not a single wolf dared to breathe. Valerius’s shadow stretched long across the aisle, his dark crimson eyes glowing like burning coals beneath the edge of his dark hair.
He didn't glance at the groveling pack elders. He didn't even acknowledge Jax or Brenda writhing on the cold stone. His glowing red gaze locked instantly onto Lyra.
The two guards holding her collapsed onto their knees, clutching their throats as their breath was starved out by his terrifying pressure.
Lyra stood alone on the altar steps, panting, her torn dress slipping off one smooth shoulder, exposing her pale collarbone. Her silver-flecked eyes met his crimson glare without flinching.
Valerius walked up the altar steps, his heavy combat boots echoing like death knells against the stone. He stopped inches from her. The overwhelming scent of dark pine, crushed ozone, and raw male dominance hit her like a wave, making her n*****s harden painfully against the lace of her corset as an electric spark raced over her skin.
He raised one broad, leather-gloved hand. His thick fingers caught her chin, lifting her face up with rough, possessive demand.
He leaned down, his sharp nose tracing the warm skin of her throat, taking in her scent with a deep, low growl that vibrated straight through her chest.
"A rejected mate..." Valerius rasped, his voice a dark, gravelly baritone that sent a spike of pure molten heat plunging down between her thighs. "...carrying the secret blood of a weakling."
Jax choked on his own blood from the floor, struggling against the crushing aura. "Your Majesty! She... she is a defective, wolfless human! She was just banished from my pack!"
Valerius slowly turned his head, his glowing crimson eyes narrowing into lethal slits as he looked down at the bleeding Alpha.
"You threw away a divine treasure to claim a piece of street trash, little wolf," Valerius growled, his lips pulling back to reveal elongated, razor-sharp fangs.
Before anyone could scream, Valerius leaned in and buried his fangs deep into the tender junction where Lyra’s neck met her shoulder.
Lyra gasped, her back arching violently as liquid fire surged directly into her bloodstream. The unsealed royal mate mark burned into her flesh, glowing a blinding silver and obsidian through her skin.
Valerius pulled back, licking a drop of her sweet blood from his lower lip. His dark eyes burned with ruthless, possessive hunger as he reached down, effortlessly scooping her up into his massive arms and locking her tight against his broad, armored chest.
"She is no longer your banished human," Valerius declared, his voice booming through the ruins of the cathedral. "She—and the secret heir inside her womb—belong to the Bloodfang King now."
