Amira wanted to take a nap. She had been awake for three days and her body was starting to feel tired. Whenever the nurses or doctor came in she would pretend to be asleep. Amira was afraid to close her eyes, she did not want to wake up every other year, she wanted to have a normal life, whatever that meant. The doctor went into Amira's room and found her on the floor bloody and crying in pain. She had tried to get up and fallen down yanking the needles from her body. Amira was in excruciating pain, unable to reach the call button. Her body had gone into panic and her consciousness was slowly fading. She grabbed Doctor O'Neill's hand and begged him to keep her awake.
"Don't let me sleep please." She pleaded.
"Amira, you need to rest." He answered as softly as he could.
"No, I don't want to wake up in five years again. If I fall asleep again, please don't let me wake up.
Amira's pleas had broken Doctor O'Neill. He understood her fear. The truth is, he would have stopped caring for Amira had she not woken up five years prior. Amira had woken up three years after she was taken to the hospital. O'Neill's only son, who was in a coma as well, had woken up five days after her and gone into a coma once again. The second time she had woken up after being in bed for five years, O'Neill's son had woken up five days after and fallen to sleep again later, as she had. The doctor was a man of science but those small coincidences had him hopeful and caring for Amira more and more each day. If Tom followed the pattern he would be awake, the next day, but what did it mean for his son now that Amira was awake for almost four full days now.
The doctor had been watching Amira sleep for an hour hoping she would wake up again soon. He was lost in thought when Amira started to stir and open her eyes. The doctor couldn't help the smile creeping into his eyes as she slowly blinked her eyes open.
"How long?" Amira asked in an almost inaudible voice.
"What do you mean?" He asked, amused.
"How long was I gone for this time?"
"One."
"Hmm, another year." She said, looking out the window.
"One hour, he corrected."
Amira looked at him with the biggest smile. He had only seen her asleep or frowning, sometimes faking a smile, but doctor O'Neill had seen Amira genuinely smiling for the first time. He wondered how his parents could have abandoned such a charming little girl without any care for her well being. Amira stayed awake for another three hours until she finally let her body fall asleep and let the darkness in.
Amira woke up to the doctor calling her name softly. She was terrified to ask what day or year it was. When she finally opened her eyes, she was surprised to see a different doctor talking to her. She started crying uncontrolably, fearing that she had slept long enough for Doctor O'Neill to no longer be by her side. Amira didn't know where she came from but now the only person she found familiar had left again and there was nothing she could do about it.
