In a strange room there were machines beeping and everyone around her was unfamiliar to her. Her throat felt dry, and she couldn’t spit out any words, she desperately looks around as the machines around her started beeping. She didn’t know where she was or how long she had been there, but she knew she must get out. “Woah, you need to calm down sweetheart!” A man in a white coat said. “Who are you” She managed to say in a hoarse voice. “I am Doctor O’Neill and your name is?” “Amira” “Do you have a last name?” “Je-Jensen” “Where are your parents, Amira?” “Who?” “We found you alone, where are your parents?” He asked again studying Amira. “I don’t know, I-I don’t think I have parents.” She replied, staring right at the doctor with her innocent eyes. “Amira how long have you been on your own?” “I don’t know how long I have been here?” “You have been in and out of a coma for five years.” He replied looking at her with a saddened expression. “Hmm Five years.” She whispered, Amira settled back in her bed and closed her eyes she was hoping that she was dreaming Amira slowly opened her eyes and looked at the doctor, his back was towards her, she cleared her throat to get his attention. “Amira how are you feeling?” “Tired.” she simply replied. “Can we go over a few things?” “Sure” in that moment Amira realized that she could understand and speak to the doctor but the language she was speaking felt so foreign to her. “What is wrong Amira?” The doctor asked with a concern look on his face. “I have a headache can you dim the lights?” Amira noticed that the doctor looked different, but she couldn’t pinpoint what it was, She had only known the doctor for a few minutes. She was hooked to machines, but she was not in the same room she had woken up the first time. She wondered when she had been moved, Amira wanted to get up, but she could not get her legs to respond to her. As soon as she tried to get up, she lost her grip and landed on her bottom. “Amira!” The doctor rushed to her. “You have to take it easy eight years is too long of a slumber; we need to wake your leg muscles and get you some training before…” The doctor stopped talking when he noticed Amira’s shocked expression. “Eight years?” She said in a big sob. “After you woke up you went back to sleep that was three years ago.” He said in soft tone. “Three years” She whispered. Doctor O’Neill was afraid to let her go back to sleep, last time she stayed asleep for three years, they had unhooked her from all life support, but she was still alive, they kept her muscles moving with machines. She was simply deeply sleeping, she was not in a typical coma, but there was no logical explanation to what was wrong with her. During her sleep Doctor O’Neill had started the process to become her guardian if she ever woke up, he hoped that he could help her regain her memory and keep her safe until she found her family.
