Seven days had passed since my meeting with King Alaric, and I had spent every moment since then wrestling with my decision. The revelation of my royal blood and the strange connection I felt with the king weighed heavily on my mind. Maxine had been a constant source of support, encouraging me to embrace this opportunity.
Finally, I made up my mind. I couldn't ignore the pull I felt towards Alaric, and the chance to bring honor and resources to the Strawberry Moon Pack was too significant to pass up. I decided to take part in the Luna contest. I know I will never become queen, but it will be nice to get to travel for a bit. I can think of it as my own personal vacation. Maybe a home away from home kind of situation.
As I prepared for the journey back to the palace, Maxine was by my side, her excitement palpable. "Eve, this is going to be amazing! I can't wait to see you shine."
I smiled, feeling a mix of nerves and determination. "Thanks, Max. I couldn't do this without you." That was true. I really can't, she will be my rock through this competition. I need her now more than ever before.
Lyra arrived after a quick phone call to help us prepare for the move to the palace. Thankfully, the strawberry moon pack isn't that far from the king's broader. She was efficient and organized, quickly making a list of everything that needed to be packed and transported. Since I will be getting new clothes, I only need to bring a few things. Mostly my books would take up the most space. Max, on the other hand, didn't want to leave much of anything behind.
"Alright, Evelyn," Lyra said, her tone professional yet friendly. "Let's go over what you'll need to bring with you. We'll make sure everything is taken care of."
As we sat down to discuss the details, Maxine couldn't help but chat animatedly with Lyra. "So, Lyra, what's it like working so closely with the king? It must be exciting!"
Lyra smiled, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "It has its moments, Maxine. The king is a fair and just ruler, and it's an honor to serve him. Growing up I always dreamed of being a member of his court, but I never thought I would become his beta."
"Well, you make a great beta. I am glad to see women filling higher profile roles in the kings' court. It speaks volumes about you as a person, since the role is traditionally held by another male wolf." Maxine leaned in, her curiosity getting the better of her. "And what about the Luna contest? What can we expect?"
Lyra's expression grew thoughtful. "The Luna contest is a series of challenges designed to test your strength, intelligence, and character. It's not just about physical abilities; it's also about your ability to lead and inspire others."
I listened intently, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension. "What kind of challenges are we talking about?"
Lyra glanced at me, her gaze steady. "There will be a variety of tasks, some involving physical endurance, others requiring strategic thinking and problem-solving. You'll need to be prepared for anything, but nothing is set in stone yet, as far as I know. Right now, the king wants to find out if there is compatibility between him and the participants. One will be eliminated each month."
My ears perked up as she spoke. "So there won't be much time for that if the first elimination is in January."
Lyra nodded her head. "That is why we need to say goodbye to your pack and into the castle as soon as possible. I'm not too worried about you being the first elimination since the king picked you himself."
I let out a long breath I didn't even know I was holding, maybe this meant more to me than I originally thought. "When is the going away party?"
Max looked at her phone, "today is the twenty-eight. Can we have it by the thirty-first so we can get you there by the first of January?"
"That can be arranged. The king will have dinner with you on your first night in the castle as a get to know you meal." Lyra added.
"Lyra, what is the king like?" My curiosity got the better of me.
Her smile showed me just how close they were. "Well, you have met the king in person. What do you think about him?"
I thought for a moment, recalling my interactions with Alaric. "He seems kind and genuine, but also very commanding and authoritative. There's a warmth to him that I didn't expect."
Lyra nodded, her smile widening. "That's a good assessment. Alaric is indeed a complex man. Let me tell you a bit about his past. When he was a child, his identity was hidden to protect him from potential threats. He grew up among the common folk, learning their ways and understanding their struggles. It wasn't until he turned sixteen that the kingdom learned about him."
Maxine's eyes widened with interest. "So, he lived a normal life before becoming king?"
"Yes," Lyra confirmed. "He experienced life without the privileges of royalty. It shaped him into the fair and just ruler he is today. We grew up together, and I saw firsthand how he navigated the challenges of his hidden identity. It wasn't easy, but it made him stronger and more empathetic."
I listened intently, feeling a deeper connection to Alaric. "That must have been difficult for him."
"It was," Lyra agreed. "But it also gave him a unique perspective. He values honesty, loyalty, and strength because he knows what it's like to live without them. He genuinely cares about the well-being of his people and expects the same from those around him."
I felt a newfound respect for Alaric. His journey wasn't just about reclaiming his birthright; it was about becoming the kind of leader who understood the struggles of his people because he had lived with them himself.
Lyra's eyes softened as she recalled their shared past. "There was this one time," she began, her voice tinged with nostalgia, "when we were barely teenagers. We were out in the market, and Alaric saw a child crying because he had lost his only coin. Without hesitation, Alaric gave the boy his own money. That’s just who he is—always putting others before himself."
I smiled at the image of a young Alaric, already displaying the compassion and selflessness that would define his reign. "He sounds remarkable," I said softly. I have never heard of this side of the king before. Most of what the publice knows is from the failed revolution led by Marcus. But now I question the information I do know about the king. It would seem that he often spreads misconceptions about himself to keep himself safe. If what Lyra says is true, then he must feel rather lonely in a world filled with lies. Is there really anyone out there that knows the real king?
Lyra nodded, a hint of pride in her voice. "He is. And he's going to be an even greater king in time. He has the heart and the will to make this kingdom thrive. With you by his side," she added, her eyes meeting mine, "I believe he can achieve anything."
The weight of her words settled on me like a gentle but firm embrace. It was clear that Alaric's path had been paved with trials and sacrifices, far beyond the public's understanding. "It's hard to believe that someone with so much responsibility can also feel so isolated," I murmured, my thoughts running wild with the complexities of his dual life.
Lyra's expression softened further, a mixture of empathy and determination. "He does have a few who know the real him, those he's let into his inner circle. But even then, the burden of leadership is a lonely road. It's why your presence is so important. You offer him a chance to be himself, free from the masks he wears for the kingdom."
I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of this revelation. "I'll do my best to be there for him, to support him in any way I can."
Lyra placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "I know you will. And together, you'll bring out the best in each other."
