The cozy pack house was a hive of activity as members of the Strawberry Moon Pack gathered to bid farewell to Maxine and me. The walls were adorned with simple, yet heartfelt decorations, and the warm glow of fairy lights added a touch of magic to the evening. It was a more intimate affair, just close friends and family, sharing in the bittersweet moment of parting. Maxine and I stood near the fireplace, our faces reflecting a mix of emotions. We were surrounded by our pack mates, each person taking a moment to share stories, offer words of encouragement, and express their love. Among the guests was a familiar face with striking silver hair that caught the light in the most captivating way. She moved with an easy grace, her presence both calming and intriguing. Lyra noticed my curiosity and leaned in to whisper, "That's Alina, also from our Strawberry Moon Pack. She's here to show her support as the other member of your pack going to court." "What do you mean?" I asked, a bit confused. Lyra looked surprised that I wasn't informed. "She is the champion of the Strawberry Moon Pack leader. It looks like the games are already beginning." Alina approached with a warm smile. "Good evening," she greeted, her voice smooth and melodic. "Evelyn, Maxine, it's wonderful to see you both. Our pack has always held you in the highest regard, and I wanted to meet you in person before we meet at the castle and to wish you good luck." I smiled, a hint of surprise in my eyes. "Thank you, Alina. It's comforting to know we have the support of our home pack. Your presence here means a lot to us." Maxine nodded in agreement. "Yes, it does. We'll carry your good wishes with us as we embark on this new adventure." My smile faltered slightly as I glanced at Maxine, who gave me a reassuring nod. We both knew that Alina's presence was more than just a friendly gesture. It was a strategic move to gain favor and support from our pack. As the evening progressed, Alina's charm and eloquence were hard to ignore. She made a point to engage me in conversation, her voice dripping with sweetness. "Evelyn, I must say, I've heard so much about your bravery and leadership. It's truly inspiring," Alina said, her eyes sparkling with feigned admiration. I forced a smile, feeling a bit uncomfortable with Alina's excessive praise. "Thank you, Alina. That's very kind of you to say." Alina continued, her tone overly enthusiastic. "I really hope we can become good friends. It's so important for us to support each other, especially in times like these." Maxine, sensing my discomfort, stepped in. "Yes, support is crucial. We're all in this together, after all." Alina's smile widened, and she placed a hand on my arm. "Exactly! I'm so glad we see eye to eye on this. Let's make sure we stay in touch and help each other out whenever we can." I nodded, though I couldn't shake the feeling that Alina's friendliness was more about gaining an advantage than genuine camaraderie. As the evening wore on, Maxine and I remained vigilant, knowing that we needed to be cautious around Alina. Just as we were about to step away from the gathering, the leader of the Strawberry Moon Pack, Alpha Rowan, approached us. His presence commanded respect, and the room seemed to quiet down as he neared. "Evelyn, Maxine," he greeted us with a warm smile. "I wanted to personally wish you both the best of luck on your journey. Our pack is proud to have you represent us." "Thank you, Alpha Rowan," I replied, feeling a sense of pride and responsibility. Maxine nodded in agreement. "We appreciate your support. It means a lot to us." Alpha Rowan glanced over at Alina, who was still mingling with the other pack members. "I see you've met my youngest daughter, Alina. She's quite determined and has a strong spirit. I hope you can all work together and support each other." I exchanged a quick glance with Maxine, understanding the underlying message. "Of course, Alpha Rowan. We'll do our best to support each other." With a final nod, Alpha Rowan bid us farewell and moved on to speak with other members of the pack. "That was a bit weird, don't you think?" Max had pointed out the obvious. "I mean, he is probably glad he has two pack members in the running. No one else was as lucky," I replied, trying to make sense of the situation. As we walked over to where Lyra was standing, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. The court was a prestigious place, and the competition would be fierce. We needed to be prepared for anything. Lyra greeted us with a warm smile. "How are you both holding up?" "We're managing," Maxine said with a sigh. "But we were just talking about the court. How many members are there exactly?" Lyra nodded, understanding our curiosity. "There is one representative from each of the twelve packs, plus the Beta and the Alpha King. So, in total, there are fourteen members of the court." I took a deep breath, trying to process the information. "Can you remind us which packs are represented?" "Of course," Lyra said, her voice steady and reassuring. "The twelve packs are as follows: Wolf Moon Snow Moon Worm Moon Pink Moon Flower Moon Strawberry Moon Buck Moon Sturgeon Moon Harvest Moon Hunter’s Moon Beaver Moon Cold Moon Each pack sends their best representative to the court. It's a great honor and responsibility. " Maxine and I exchanged glances, feeling the weight of the task ahead. "And the Beta and Alpha King?" I asked. Lyra nodded. "Yes, the Beta and Alpha King oversee the court and ensure that everything runs smoothly. They are the highest authority and their decisions are final." I felt a shiver run down my spine. The stakes were higher than I had imagined. "We have a lot of work to do," I said, determination filling my voice. Maxine nodded in agreement. "We need to be at our best if we want to succeed." Lyra placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "You both have the strength and determination to make it. Just remember to stay true to yourselves and support each other." With Lyra's words of encouragement, Maxine and I felt a renewed sense of purpose. We knew that the road ahead would be challenging, but we were ready to face it together. As the evening came to an end, we said our goodbyes and headed back to our quarters. The night was quiet, and the moon cast a gentle glow over the pack house. I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what was to come. Maxine and I spent the next few days preparing for our journey to the castle. We trained hard, honing our skills and strategizing for the challenges ahead. We knew that we needed to be at our best if we wanted to make a lasting impression at the court. Finally, the day arrived for us to leave. The pack gathered to see us off, their faces filled with pride and hope. Alpha Rowan gave us a final nod of encouragement, and Lyra hugged us tightly, whispering words of support. As we set off on our journey, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nerves. The path ahead was uncertain, but I knew that with Maxine by my side, we could face anything. The castle loomed in the distance, its towers reaching towards the sky. It was a symbol of power and prestige, and I felt a surge of determination. I was ready to prove myself and make my pack proud. I wasn't sure what the moon goddess had planed for me, but I hoped I wouldn't have to wait long to find out.
