I was surprised by how quickly everyone went about their own business after my little outburst. I breathed a sigh of relief knowing I would be left to get on with my own work.
By the time Nate and I left the office that evening, I was emotionally wrung out. It had been one of those days where every glance felt like a question. I'd held my head high like I promised, smiled when Sarah cracked jokes to ease the tension, and told myself over and over that this storm would pass.
It had to.
But as the city lights blurred past the car window and Nate's hand rested loosely over mine, the silence between us felt heavier than usual. He'd had a long day too — Everly negotiations, board calls, PR updates. Yet somehow, he still made time for his family.
