For two years, Elena Hart and Adrian Blackwood have been locked in an endless battle for first place. The entire school knows them as academic enemies. Teachers compare them. Students bet on them. Neither has ever accepted second place. Then the National Science Innovation Competition launch ends in an explosion. A student is hurt. The competition is nearly shut down before it begins. Elena and Adrian are the only ones who noticed something was wrong with the lab before it happened, and when they speak up, they stop being witnesses and become suspects instead.Forced to team up to clear their names and finish what they started, they find something neither was prepared for. The boy Elena has spent two years trying to defeat is the only person who has ever looked past her grades and seen her. And the girl Adrian has resented since freshman year understands his loneliness better than anyone in his own house ever has. But underneath the sabotage is a truth neither of them knows yet. A signature on an old document. A fund that vanished the same year Elena's father got sick. A family name that keeps surfacing in places it should not. And for one unbearable stretch, Elena's own father's name on paperwork that makes her question everything she believed about him.As the truth gets closer, so does the cost of telling it. When Elena is finally offered a way to have everything back, the scholarship, the future, even Adrian's inheritance, in exchange for burying what she knows, she has to decide who she wants to be when nobody is watching.

Chapter One: Rankings
The gymnasium doors slam open at seven fifty two exactly, and four hundred students go quiet in under ten seconds. Somewhere in the second row, a girl is crying without making a sound, wiping her face fast before anyone turns around. Two seats over, someone whispers a number like a prayer, ninety six, I heard it's ninety six, and gets shushed by a friend checking her phone under the desk. A teacher near the exit checks his watch twice in ten seconds, like the countdown belongs to him too. That is what three years at Westbridge Academy does to a person. Nobody has to teach you to fear a countdown. You learn it the first time you watch your own name climb and drop on a projector screen in front of the entire school, and you never fully unlearn it. Elena Hart sits in the third row with her spine straight and her blazer sleeves tugged down over her wrists, because the cuffs have started to fray and she has not told her mother yet. She checks her phone one last time before the lights dim. Her mother's message is still sitting there from this morning. Good luck today. No matter what happens, we'll figure out next month's rent. She turns the screen face down on her knee and keeps her eyes forward, on the empty stage. "You look like you're about to take the SATs again," Nadia whispers from beside her. "Relax. It's just rankings." "It's never just rankings." On the stage, Principal Dawes taps the microphone twice, and the screen behind him lights up with the Westbridge crest, the one that hangs in the front hall in gold lettering nobody is allowed to touch. Excellence Earns Everything. Elena has read that phrase probably four thousand times and has never once believed the last word of it. Excellence has earned her a scholarship application, a part time job, and a permanent headache. It has not earned her a father who is still alive to see any of it. She pushes that thought down before it can finish forming. Not today. A ripple moves through the row behind her, girls sitting up straighter, one of them actually fixing her hair, and Elena does not need to turn around to know why. She smells his cologne before she hears his voice, expensive and unbothered, the kind that costs more than her mother's car payment. "Am I late?" Adrian Blackwood says, to no one in particular, sliding into the seat directly behind her at seven fifty three. "The assembly hasn't started," someone tells him. "Then I'm early." Elena does not turn around. She has spent two years perfecting the art of not turning around for Adrian Blackwood, mostly because the first year she did not know how to stop, and it cost her more focus than she could afford to lose. He leans forward anyway, close enough that she feels it more than hears it. "Morning, Hart. Sleep well knowing I'm about to take your spot?" "You've said that every semester since freshman year. It's gotten less funny every time." "It's gotten less funny because you're nervous." "I'm not nervous." "You're gripping your pen like it owes you money." Elena looks down. She is. She sets it flat on her knee and does not give him the satisfaction of a response, though the corner of her mouth betrays her before she can stop it, and she hates that he catches it, and she hates more that some small, exhausted part of her has missed this. Principal Dawes clears his throat into the microphone, and the room settles the rest of the way. "Before we begin today's assembly, I know many of you are eager for one specific announcement, so I won't keep you waiting." The screen behind him shifts from the crest to a ranked list, names stacking down in size order, first place largest, last place smallest, a visual hierarchy the entire school has memorized without ever being told to. Four hundred students hold their breath at once. Elena's hands go still in her lap. Her name appears first. Elena Hart. Ninety eight point six. Directly beneath it, tied close enough that the numbers blur together if you are not looking for the difference: Adrian Blackwood. Ninety eight point five. A full breath moves through the row behind her, someone whispering, close one this time, and Elena allows herself exactly one second of something that is not quite pride and not quite relief before Adrian leans forward again. "Enjoy it," he says, low enough that only she can hear it. "Point one isn't a lead. It's a rounding error." "It's still my name on top." "For now." Elena finally turns around, just enough to look at him properly, and there it is, the thing that has kept this rivalry alive for two years longer than it should have. He is smiling like this is a game, like none of it costs him anything, like losing to her would simply be an inconvenience instead of the only thing standing between him and his father's silence at dinner. She used to think that smile meant he had nothing at stake. She has started to wonder, in the last few months, if it means the opposite. She does not get to finish the thought. "There is one more announcement," Principal Dawes says, and something in his voice shifts, formal in a way that makes the whole gymnasium lean forward an inch. "As many of you know, Westbridge has been selected to represent the region in this year's National Science Innovation Competition. This is the first time in school history we have qualified for the national round." Applause breaks out, scattered and uncertain, the way applause always is before people know if they are supposed to be excited yet. "The competition requires each school to enter exactly one team," Dawes continues. "After reviewing this semester's performance records, the science department has selected our representatives." Elena's stomach drops before her brain catches up to why. Behind her, Adrian has gone very still. "Elena Hart," Dawes reads, "and Adrian Blackwood." The gymnasium erupts, four hundred voices at once, half of them laughing, half of them already reaching for their phones, because everyone in this room has watched these two circle each other for two straight years and not one of them believed it would ever end in a partnership instead of a winner. Elena sits frozen in her seat, ninety eight point six suddenly meaning nothing at all, while behind her Adrian Blackwood, for the first time in two years, does not have a single smart thing to say. Nadia grabs Elena's arm hard enough to bruise. "You have to be joking." Elena is not laughing. Elena is doing the math she always does the second something threatens to cost her, and the number she keeps landing on is not the scholarship, not the ranking, not even Adrian's face two rows back gone pale under all that composure. It is the launch event in four days, the one every major scholarship committee in the state will be watching, the one her mother has already asked to take the afternoon off work to attend, the one Elena cannot afford to walk into unprepared and cannot afford, in any sense of the word, to walk into with Adrian Blackwood standing beside her instead of across from her. Behind her, Adrian finally leans forward one last time. "Partners, Hart," he says, and for once there is nothing teasing in it at all. "Try not to lose us the one thing you actually care about." Elena does not answer him. She is too busy wondering how she is supposed to survive four days, let alone a national competition, standing shoulder to shoulder with the one person at Westbridge who has never once let her win. Before she can stand, Dr. Amelia Carter walks onto the stage carrying two blue laboratory folders. "Congratulations," she says, and the gymnasium quiets again, unsure why a teacher is still talking. She crosses the floor, climbs down off the stage, and stops in front of the third row. The first folder lands in Elena's hands. The second lands in Adrian's, two rows back. "Report to the chemistry lab after school," Dr. Carter says. "Both of you." Elena opens her mouth to ask something, anything, but Dr. Carter is already walking away. "Your partnership begins today."
