1. THE NIGHT
JEANETTE
I stopped in my tracks as a chill tore down my spine, making my hackles rise up again. It was late at night when I was returning from my university and trust me when I say this, I am damn scared. It's not the first time I’m this late. In fact, a week ago, I literally had to run a mile to get on the last bus.
But today...
The story was different. It's not the darkness or the silence that was scaring me. Nope, I was far more familiar to these things and now they are my constant companion. I was scared of the harshness of the air, of the eeriness of the ambience and the constant churning feelings in my stomach.
I felt as if something big was going to happen, a big change. Not like the one that changed my life and made me what I’m today. Something in me was constantly telling me that this time, everything would be different, different in a good way.
And that was another reason why I was scared. I never welcomed changes with open arms, after all, they create disturbances and turbulence in your smoothly going lifestyle.
I was lost in my thoughts when suddenly the blaring music of my infuriating cell phone cut through the silence of the surroundings. I literally lurched forwards at the sudden sound and mentally started to curse the person who dared to break the chain of my thoughts.
“Jeanette?”, a sweet and melodic voice filled my ears from the other end and I had to reign in myself from lashing out at the person, “Jean are you there? It’s important babes”.
Taking a deep breath, I took out my house keys and inserted it with one hand while trying to balance the phone, “Yes Ana, I’m hearing you and I also heard you have something important to say”. Trust me, this girl was my best friend and I wouldn’t even dare to say a bad word against her.
But in moments like this, I really think why we are even friends! “Jean, remember the company about whom Michael told you last week?” I took a moment to think back and then said with a shrug, “Yes he told me. But Ana, I can discretely remember that the company that he was talking about is a business giant and does not invest in small firms like ours. Then what happened now?”
The moment she started to say something, the phone slipped into my t-shirt as her blabbering echoed off in the silence. See, the things her presence can do!
Wiggling into my house as soon as possible, I took out my phone and glared at the screen before putting it on my ears once again. “Jean, did you hear what I said?”, she sounded livid and I wouldn’t blame her too but I wasn’t going to put my hand inside my dress out in the open.
“Sorry”, I said sheepishly and then started to take out my shoes, “my phone slipped out of my hand and-“
She let out an exasperated breath and spoke the words again, “They have asked for a meeting with you specifically on Tuesday”
Her words seemed to be casual at that time but lest did I knew that her words were just the beginning of something big, something that changed my whole world, my beliefs and as a whole, it changed me.
This is my story and I am Jeanette, a simple girl who never knew that she was a mate to the Alpha Almighty, the king of the entire mythical werewolf kingdom!
