Cozy Quiet

1424 Words
James gets out and stretches his tired and stiff body. Taking a deep breath, filling his lungs with the freshest air he had tasted in years. The heat and exhaustion just roll off and dissolve into the ground at his feet. Never thought freedom could taste so sweet. The cabin is cute with a wraparound porch, and a bench on the forest side, and looks like one on the beach side as well. The log structure looks sturdy and relatively well-maintained. Well worn, but the rustic look makes it seem part of the setting, letting it blend into the surroundings. Stepping onto the deck it feels solid. Stepping into the airy and light inside of the cabin, high ceilings and large glass windows and doors great him. An open-plan living area with leather couches and a fireplace in the corner for the colder months I guess. A large glass sliding door leads to the porch and the beach. The modern feel rustic design seems to fit pretty well. The huge glass doors and windows feel like they invite the forest and the beach in. A well-equipped bedroom and bathroom occupy the opposite wall. White flowy drapes and bedding finish the fancy look. "Let's see if I can invite the outdoors in," he thinks sliding the door open to let the fresh air in. "Time to unpack". No matter how short his stay, he always unpacks. Swapping his jeans for comfy running shorts, for a run, and make sure he's set in case he wants to take a dip on his way back. Lacing his runners he closes the door and starts walking into the forest, following what looks like a footpath carved among the trees and scrubs. When it opens up enough he sets off on a comfortable jog admiring the natural beauty of his surroundings. Running through the forest and turning towards the water when it gets too dense. After a while he hits the beach, stopping at the edge of the beach. Takes off his shoes and walks towards the surf. The cool water lapping at his feet leaves him feeling so small and insignificant. It's been quite a while since he has felt like this, being a part of nature. Being a Billionaire comes with more than your share of hard work, late nights, and very little time to indulge in this kind of relaxation. The world stills and he watches the waves come in, splashing over his bare feet. Walking along the beach on the edge of the water he makes his way back to the beach in front of the cabin. Placing his clothes and shoes on the sand he watches the water and streams then strips down and jogs into the water, diving through the waves and popping out behind the breakers. The water is amazing, cool enough to get the heart pumping but not so cold that you would want to get out immediately. He splashes in the water for a bit and when the wind picks up, he swims back to shore and walks back up the beach toward his home for the foreseeable future. Grabbing his stuff he thinks to himself... I could get used to this. Drying off the towel he left on the deck chair, and draping it over the railing he walks in and heads for the shower. The sun is going down and the temperature has dropped a bit. Turning on the shower he steps under the warm water, enjoying the sting of the warm water on his cool skin. I feel alive, such an amazing feeling. Tomorrow he will need to go to town and get some items for the pantry... maybe after meeting up with Jessica he can grab a slice of that pie again.... mmmm... yeah, that's the only plan I'm making for the rest of the week, I need to eat a piece of that pie again. It's just about then he realizes that the water is running cold, he's been standing here lost in thought for probably thirty minutes. Ugh, I need to focus on what I'm doing. Dressing in only boyshorts, he heads to the living space. Grabbing a single whiskey in a tumbler, and stepping out onto the deck to watch the sunset over the water. What a view. This location should be worth millions. The peace and tranquility you experience just sit here and watch the spectacular natural show of color across the sky. The view is breathtaking. A knock on the door breaks him out of his reverie and walking back in he answers the door. Instead of an elder lady, which I assume Jessica would be, a young man in his early twenties smiles up at him, "Good evening?" he question and he picks up a covered dish from the porch deck "Good evening sir, Jessica asked that I bring this by, as she will not be able to make it tonight, but figured you would be hungry around now" oh, ok, he thinks, rather lost for words, he wasn't aware of food being included in the rental "Thank you, she didn't have to go through all that trouble" he smiles widely again " Nah, it's no trouble, she feeds the people at the lodge home-cooked meals, she believes its the only way to eat" he chuckles then bids James a good night. Stepping back in he lets the door close before placing the dish on the kitchen counter. The flavorful aroma of braised brisket and veggies hits his nose when he lifts the lid and a hearty chuckle sounds in the empty cabin, I can't even remember when last I had a decent home-cooked meal. With his lifestyle, hotel or restaurant lunch and dinners are the norms, and with him living alone, it just makes sense, no dishes and leftovers in the fridge make life so much easier. Searching through the cabinets in the kitchen and finding a plate and utensils, dishing up is easy and he takes his plate back out to the porch. The sun has set, but the sky remains a mesmerizing tint of indigo and plum. He eats his home-cooked meal with gusto, enjoying every single bite of crispy potatoes, tender meat, and crunchy creamy vegetables. A truly delightful plate of food, definitely not just something to fill the hunger. Once the sky is dark he moves inside to wash the dishes and then walks out and around the porch, to see what the view on the other side has to offer. Making himself comfortable on the bench while the moon rises over the trees gazing at another magnificent nightly scene, as he watches the silhouettes of the trees against the bright big moon, and not for the first time today he marvels at the beauty and the sense of peace that this remote location has brought him. Maybe I should check out available real estate in the area, and make this a regular, or even a more semi-permanent location for himself, thoughts go wild blooming with possibilities as his mind contemplates enjoying this feeling of belonging. That would be good for him. There is a strong network signal here so working remotely should not be an issue. If he can work from other locations in the world for months while busy with acquisitions, he could just as well work from here and send Brighton to those projects. After dedicating his life to building the company to the level it is, James has spent years grooming him to run the business so he can eventually enjoy the fruits of his labor. Thinking it is time to seriously look into this, especially with his sleeplessness. Fear of some life-threatening illness creeping up on him as a result of not sleeping adequately keeps him up at night, not that you would notice... He is up most of every night anyway, but it is a serious concern. If he could cut back on the stress he might just be able to live a little and enjoy it. It's well past eleven and everything is dark around the cabin when he finally makes his way back into the house, stretched on the bed, stretched out on his back, with thoughts of spending days here, hiking and eating that delicious pie in town when James finally drifts off in a peaceful sleep. , Somewhere in the night he wakes to the sound of the waves lapping on the beach, and he's lulled back into that peaceful slumber.
