Blood Under the Crimson Sky
The day the sky turned crimson was the day Lyra Hayes lost everything. She was only twelve years old, too young to understand why the adults around her suddenly looked terrified. It was a warm Saturday afternoon in New Haven, and the streets had been filled with laughter only moments before. Children chased one another through the park while families enjoyed the sunshine. Then the light changed. The bright blue sky slowly faded into a deep crimson red. It spread across the horizon like blood spilling over a white cloth. Within seconds, every cloud had disappeared, leaving behind an eerie scarlet sky that made the city feel strangely silent. People stopped walking. Cars pulled over. Everyone looked up. What is happening?" a woman whispered, clutching her little boy's hand. A loud rumble echoed across the sky. The sound grew louder until the ground itself began to shake. Lyra instinctively grabbed her father's hand. Dad..she whispered. "I'm scared. Dr. Ethan Hayes looked up, his usually calm face filled with concern. He tightened his grip on her hand and forced a reassuring smile. It's going to be okay. But Lyra knew he wasn't telling the truth. Without warning, a gigantic silver object emerged from the crimson clouds. It was unlike anything anyone had ever seen. The enormous spacecraft stretched across the sky like a floating city, blocking the sunlight and casting a shadow over the streets below. Its polished metallic surface reflected the crimson sky, making it appear both beautiful and terrifying. The silence lasted only a heartbeat. Then the emergency sirens began to scream. People panicked. Run! It's an attack! Get underground! The peaceful city erupted into chaos. Parents grabbed their children. Cars crashed into one another as frightened drivers tried to escape. Store owners abandoned their shops. Police officers shouted through loudspeakers, directing people toward emergency shelters. Lyra looked up as a brilliant blue light appeared beneath the massive spacecraft. The center of the ship slowly opened. Hundreds of glowing figures descended from the sky. They floated instead of falling. Their silver armor shimmered like liquid metal, and each carried a strange weapon that pulsed with blue energy. Their movements were calm and perfectly synchronized, making them seem more like guardians than invaders. For a brief moment, Lyra forgot to breathe. They're... beautiful," she whispered. Her father turned sharply toward her. No, Lyra." His voice was unusually firm. They're dangerous. The first explosion shattered the moment. A building several streets away erupted into flames, sending pieces of concrete flying through the air. Another explosion followed, then another, until the city was swallowed by smoke, fire, and terrified screams. The alien invasion had begun. Dr. Hayes pulled Lyra behind him. We have to leave. Now. They ran through the crowded streets, weaving between abandoned vehicles and frightened civilians. Burning debris crashed onto the road behind them, forcing them to change direction again and again. As they reached a quieter street, Dr. Hayes suddenly stopped. His eyes were fixed on the research facility standing at the end of the road. No.. he whispered. The color drained from his face. Lyra looked at him in confusion. Dad? What's wrong? Instead of answering, he reached beneath his shirt and removed a small silver pendant hanging around his neck. The pendant was shaped like a six-pointed crystal, glowing faintly in his hand. He gently placed it around Lyra's neck. Listen to me carefully. His voice trembled. No matter what happens today, you must never take this pendant off. Lyra frowned. What is it? Before he could answer, another deafening explosion shook the ground. The research facility's security alarms began to blare. Dr. Hayes looked toward the building, then back at his daughter. His eyes were filled with sadness..and apology. I wish I had more time to explain. Then he wrapped his arms around her in the tightest hug he had ever given her. When he finally let go, he looked at her as though he were memorizing her face. Stay here," he said quietly. I'll be right back. Before Lyra could stop him, her father turned and ran toward the burning research facility. She watched him disappear into the smoke. A cold feeling settled deep inside her chest. Something told her that once he entered that building.. Nothing would ever be the same again. Stay here. Those were the last words Dr. Ethan Hayes said before disappearing into the smoke. Lyra stood frozen for only a second. Then she shook her head. No... Dad. Ignoring his order, she ran after him. The heat from the burning buildings stung her face as she raced through the deserted street. Smoke filled her lungs, making every breath painful, but she refused to stop. She couldn't lose her father—not after everything they had been through together. The silver pendant around her neck grew warmer with every step. She clutched it tightly. "What are you?" she whispered. There was no answer. As she reached the entrance of the research facility, she slowed down. The building was badly damaged. Glass covered the ground, alarms screamed through the halls, and sparks rained from broken electrical wires. The air smelled of smoke and burning metal. "Dad?" she called softly. No reply. Then she heard voices. One was her father's. The other was calm, deep, and unfamiliar. Carefully, Lyra stepped behind a broken concrete wall and looked inside the central laboratory. Her heart nearly stopped. Three alien soldiers stood in a circle around her father. Their silver armor reflected the flames dancing across the shattered walls. Blue energy weapons rested in their hands, ready to fire at a moment's notice. Standing in front of them was another alien. He was taller than the rest. His armor was black, decorated with silver lines that glowed faintly like stars in the night sky. A dark cape rested over his shoulders, and his long silver hair framed a face that was both handsome and intimidating. But it was his eyes that captured Lyra's attention. They were bright silver. Cold. Ancient. Powerful. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then the commander broke the silence. Ethan Hayes. His voice echoed through the ruined laboratory. You know why I am here. Her father nodded slowly. I've known this day would come. Lyra frowned. They knew each other. The commander took another step forward. The Core. Dr. Hayes folded his arms. I don't have it. You are lying. I am protecting it. The alien commander lowered his head for a brief moment before looking up again. "If the Core remains on Earth, billions of lives will be at risk. And if I hand it over," Dr. Hayes replied, humanity will lose its future. Silence filled the room. The commander sighed. I never wanted this. Lyra's heart pounded. What was the Core? Why did her father sound as if he had known these aliens for years? Nothing made sense anymore. Suddenly, one of the alien soldiers raised his weapon. Commander," he said. "We are wasting time. The commander lifted a hand, stopping him. No. His silver eyes never left Dr. Hayes. I will give you one final chance. Where is the Core? Dr. Hayes smiled sadly. Some secrets are worth dying for. The commander's expression hardened. So be it. With a flash of blue light, an energy blade formed in his hand. Lyra gasped. No. Before she realized what she was doing, she ran into the open. Dad. Everyone turned toward her. Her father's face turned pale. "Lyra!" His voice was filled with panic. "I told you to stay away!" She ignored him and kept running. The commander looked at the frightened little girl standing only a few steps away. For the first time, emotion flickered across his face. Regret. Real regret. Dr. Hayes quickly stepped between them. "Please..." He looked directly at the alien commander. "She knows nothing." The commander remained silent. Then one of the soldiers suddenly moved. Believing Dr. Hayes was about to attack, the soldier fired his weapon. Everything happened in an instant. The commander spun around. "No!" But it was too late. A brilliant blue blade pierced Dr. Hayes's chest. Lyra screamed. "DAD!" Time seemed to stop. Her father staggered backward before collapsing onto the broken floor. Blood spread beneath him. Lyra dropped to her knees beside him, tears streaming down her face. No... no... please... She held his hand tightly. You can't leave me. Dr. Hayes smiled weakly. His breathing became slower. He gently touched the silver pendant around her neck. Protect it.. His voice was barely a whisper. One day... you'll understand. Tears blurred Lyra's vision. I don't understand!" I just want you! Her father looked into her eyes one last time. I love you..more than the stars. His hand slipped from hers. The light faded from his eyes. He was gone. Lyra's cries echoed through the ruined laboratory. She turned toward the alien commander, her face wet with tears and burning with rage. I hate you!" I'll never forgive you!" I swear... one day I'll kill you!" The commander stood motionless. His silver eyes rested on the pendant around her neck. Recognition flashed across his face. "So. He whispered. He entrusted it to you. The soldiers looked at him. Commander, shall we eliminate the witness? The commander slowly shook his head. "No." But. That is my final order. Without another word, he turned and walked away. The other aliens followed him, disappearing into the smoke as their spacecraft rose back into the crimson sky. Lyra remained kneeling beside her father's lifeless body. That day, she buried her childhood along with him. And beneath the blood-red sky, she made a promise she would never break. One day.. She would find the silver-eyed alien commander. And she would make him pay.
