Chapter 3: The Hunter

205 Words
Together they followed a trail of clues through Blackwood’s abandoned tunnels beneath the cemetery. There, among crumbling stone walls, they found another vampire. Older. Stronger. Eyes burning crimson. “Devin,” the creature hissed. “You’ve grown sentimental.” The vampire’s gaze settled on Nina. “Humans never survive your mistakes.” Devin moved in front of her instantly. “Leave,” he said. “Or what?” The crimson-eyed vampire attacked. What followed was a blur of speed and shadows. Stone shattered. The wind howled through the tunnels. Devin fought with desperate fury, protecting Nina at every turn. Finally, with a roar, he drove the attacker back into the darkness. The vampire fled. Devin collapsed to one knee. Blood—dark and almost black—stained his shirt. “You’re hurt,” Nina whispered. He looked up at her, breathing hard. “I’m fine.” He wasn’t. Without thinking, she knelt beside him and pressed a hand against the wound. Devin caught her wrist gently. “You shouldn’t touch vampire blood.” “And you shouldn’t keep saving my life.” For a heartbeat, neither moved. Then Devin leaned closer. “Nina…” His voice held a warning. And something dangerously close to longing.
