Unexpected Encounters

2000 Words
Sophie woke up a week later to sunlight streaming through her window, casting warm golden rays across her bedroom. She stretched, feeling the lingering fatigue from the previous day’s activities but also a thrill of excitement for what lay ahead. Today was the first day of classes, and they had planned to explore the campus library for study space after, since it has been closed since the arrived. After a quick breakfast of toast and coffee, she stepped into the living room to find Jake sprawled on the couch, still in his pajamas. He was scrolling through his phone, earbuds in place, bobbing his head to a song Sophie couldn't hear. “Hey, lazybones!” Sophie called, grabbing her backpack to make sure she had everything. “Classes start in an hour!” Jake pulled the earbuds out, blinking at her. “What time is it?” “Time for you to get moving!” she replied, laughing as she pointed to the clock. “I’ll be in my room getting ready.” 30 minutes latter after a hurried shower and a quick outfit change, Sophie emerged from her room just as Jake finally started to look presentable. They both threw on their backpacks, excitement buzzing between them. “I can’t believe today is finally here,” Sophie said, her heart racing. “It feels so surreal! It seems like just yesterday we were starting our first day of High school” “Right? And just like then, Let’s make today unforgettable!” Jake said, slinging an arm around her shoulder as they headed to campus. They walked toward the Campus in the crisp morning air, the city buzzing with energy and as they headed towards their first class, Sophie felt a flutter of nerves mixed with anticipation. She just couldn’t shake the thought that everything was about to change. As they approached the entrance to the building of their first and only class together, Jake suddenly stopped. “Hey, isn’t that the guy from the apartment above us?” Sophie turned to look, her breath catching in her throat. A tall, athletic man was coming down the stairs, his dark hair tousled and his features strikingly handsome. He wore a fitted T-shirt that showcased his toned arms and jeans that hugged his form just right. Sophie couldn’t remember a time anyone other than Jake had caused this type of physical reaction in her. As he caught sight of them, a smile broke across his face, revealing perfectly straight white teeth and Sophie could feel her body warm. “Hey there! You must be the new neighbors!” he called out, his voice smooth and inviting. “I’ve seen you a few times around the apartment. Keep meaning to stop in and say Hi, but you two were always out.” Sophie felt her cheeks warm further as he approached. “I’m Adan,” he said, extending a hand to Jake first and then to Sophie. “I live upstairs. Welcome to the building!” “Nice to meet you, Adan,” Jake replied, shaking his hand enthusiastically. “I’m Jake, and this is Sophie.” He said nodding his head toward her. Sophie managed a smile, her heart racing. “Hi! Thanks for the welcome.” Adan’s gaze lingered on her for a moment longer than necessary, and Sophie felt a mix of flattery and nervousness. “So, how are you finding the apartment so far?” He asked. “It’s great!” Sophie replied, with a smile larger than was necessary while trying to keep her composure. “Just moved in last week, so we’re almost all settled in.” “You picked a good spot,” Adan said, leaning casually against the railing. “This is my 2nd year living in the complex. The neighborhood is awesome, and the campus is just a short walk away. Plus there are plenty of cool places to hang out near by.” Jake chimed in, “Yeah, We have been out exploring a couple of times and noticed that not much other than the bookstore is open till school starts back. we’re planning to explore some more today after classes. Got any recommendations?” “Definitely check out the coffee shop on the corner if you have not already. They have the best lattes and muffins,” Adan said, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “And if you’re into tacos, there’s a fantastic food truck that parks nearby on Tuesdays and Thursdays.” “Then about a quarter mile walk in the direction of town there is a 50’s style diner called the Frosty’s Malt shop where a lot of students hang out.” Sophie felt a flutter in her stomach. “Tacos sound amazing,” she said, trying to sound casual. Adan glanced at her, his expression shifting slightly. “So, Sophie,” he began, his tone teasing. “I’d love to take you out sometime, maybe grab some coffee? I can show you around the neighborhood.” Sophie’s breath hitched in her throat. “Uh… sure!” she stammered, trying to mask her surprise. “I’d like that.” “Awesome! Let me get your number.” Adan pulled out his phone, his smile infectious. Sophie quickly relayed her digits, her heart racing. “Great! I’ll text you later,” he said, giving her one last lingering look before stepping back. “Have a fantastic first day!” As he turned and walked away, Jake nudged Sophie with his elbow, a grin plastered across his face. “Wow, you’ve got a fan already.” Sophie felt her cheeks flush. “It’s nothing. Just a coffee,” she replied, trying to downplay her excitement. “Just a coffee? That guy is seriously hot! And he seems really into you!” Jake teased, waggling his eyebrows. “Okay, maybe he is,” Sophie admitted, biting her lip. “But it’s not like it means anything.” “Sure, sure,” Jake said, rolling his eyes. “You should Definitely go for it! He seems like a great guy.” He did his best supportive friend routine, but the idea of Adan taking Sophie out for coffee made him want to…. Well it made him want to do something. He hated the idea of Adan. Sophie felt a mix of emotions—a flutter of excitement at the prospect of the first date she had had since the Jr. Prom fiasco, but also a nagging uncertainty. She had always kept her feelings for Jake close to her chest, and now this sudden interest from Adan was both thrilling and terrifying. Then again she had not date at all really during their entire friendship… Maybe if she went on a few dates with Adan, Jake would be jealous. “Come on, let’s get to class before we’re late,” Jake said, pulling her along. After Their shared English class, they parted ways for the rest of the day. Sophie arrived at her next class, Algebra, and quickly found her seat in the lecture hall, feeling a buzz of nervous energy. The professor was charismatic, engaging the students with lively anecdotes, but her mind kept drifting back to Adan and the unexpected connection they had shared. She had been in love with Jake for a long time she thought. Since the summer between Sophomore and Junior year of High school. And in that time he had never shown interest in her as anything more than friends… And Adan was hot. The encounter had her wondering if she really was in love with Jake or just… Meanwhile, across campus in his biology class, Jake was paired with a curly black-haired girl with Cream colored skin named Mia, who randomly sat down beside him with a friendly smile like she had known him for years. “Hey! I’m Mia,” she said, her voice bright and cheerful. “Jake,” he replied, instantly intrigued by her warm demeanor. She had striking hazel eyes that sparkled with enthusiasm. “Looks like we’re partners for this semester’s projects!” she said, her smile widening as she pointed at the seating list posted at the door. “What do you think about studying together?” “Sure! I’d love that,” Jake responded, feeling a spark of connection. As the professor explained the syllabus, he couldn’t help but glance at Mia. She had a genuine energy and grace about her that made him feel at ease. After class, Mia suggested grabbing lunch together. “I’ve heard there’s a great sandwich place nearby. Want to check it out?” “Absolutely! I’m always up for food,” Jake said, a grin spreading across his face. As they walked side by side, he felt an unexpected excitement. Mia was smart, funny, and effortlessly charming. He couldn’t wait to introduce her to Sophie. Sophie would love Mia he thought. “So, what’s your major?” she asked, glancing over at him with interest. “I’m studying business,” Jake replied. “Hoping to expand My family’s Home Restoration company someday.” “Wow, that’s ambitious!” Mia said, her eyes lighting up. “I’m in environmental science, so I’m really passionate about sustainability. Maybe we could work together on something someday!” “Definitely!” Jake replied, impressed. “I could use all the help I can get with business practices.” As they reached the sandwich shop, Jake felt a thrill of possibility. His first day of college was off to a fantastic start, and as he and Mia chatted over lunch, he couldn’t shake the feeling that maybe things were falling into place. Back at the apartment, Sophie was still buzzing a bit with thoughts of Adan. After class, she and Jake met up, eager to share their experiences from the day as they walked home. “Okay, spill! How was your Second class?” Sophie asked, plopping down on the couch beside Jake. “It was great! The professor is really interesting,” Jake said, his thoughts drifting again. “But… I met someone. I think you would really like her. She is warm and funny and it feels like we have always been friends ” Sophies interest peaked, feigning surprise she didn’t really feel. “Someone? Do tell!” Sophie hesitated, feeling a flutter of… something… as Jake said “Her name is Mia. We were partnered on the semester project by the professor for Biology.” He said with a smile “She wants to study together.” Jake’s expression shifted from something Sophie couldn’t quite place to what seemed like genuine excitement as he said “I am thinking of asking her for coffee, and speaking of coffee… What did you say to Adan when he called?” “I said yes,” she replied, a mixture of nerves and exhilaration bubbling within her. “But… it’s just coffee, right? I mean, we’re just getting to know each other as friends.” “Just coffee, sure,” Jake said, but his eyes sparkled with she saw as amusement. “You’ve got to let me know how it goes! Before I ask Mia” Sophie nodded, feeling a strange blend of anticipation and uncertainty. As they chatted, she couldn’t help but notice how easy it was to be around Jake, even as everything was changing. The thought of pursuing something with Adan excited her, but deep down, she felt it would only complicate her feelings for Jake. Did she want to move on without finding out if there could ever be anything more? “Okay, let’s celebrate our first day,” Jake said, his voice cheerful. “What do you want for dinner?” “Pizza and ice cream, of course!” Sophie replied, grinning. “Now you’re speaking my language!” Jake laughed, and together they began to plan their evening, both eager to embrace whatever came next in this new chapter of their lives.
