Chapter1: The Farewell
Chapter 1: The Farewell
Sophie stood at the edge of her driveway, a sea of emotions swirling within her, as the late summer sun dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows over the familiar landscape of her childhood home as she and her best friend Jake packed his Bronco for tomorrow’s Trip. It felt surreal that in just a few hours, she and Jake would leave for College in the town of Middleton, 4 hours from home. The thought both excited and terrified her.
“Are you ready for this?” Jake asked, his deep voice pulling her from her thoughts. He approached, balancing two large boxes filled up by his Mom with all the things she said they’d need for college life—sheets, toiletries, and snacks. His trademark grin was plastered on his face, but Sophie could see a flicker of uncertainty in his dark brown eyes.
“Ready as I’ll ever be,” Sophie replied, forcing a smile. The truth was, she was terrified. College was a whole new world, and while she had relied on Jake to navigate through high school life, this time felt different. Their friendship had been a safe haven, but what if this change meant losing that?
“Come on, we’ll be together. It’ll be fun,” he assured her, placing an arm around her shoulders. It was a comforting gesture that sent a wave of warmth through her. But Sophie couldn’t shake the unease in her gut. She wanted to believe him, but what if this new adventure changed everything?
“Yeah, fun,” she echoed, her voice trailing off. Sophie’s gaze drifted to the box of memories sitting by her feet—photos from high school, his first game ball, Clocks, and other little trinkets they’d collected over the last 4 years. She couldn’t help but feel nostalgic.
“Hey,” Jake said softly, nudging her arm with his. “You okay?”
“Just thinking about everything,” she admitted, feeling vulnerable. “What if things change between us? What if we drift apart?” The words hung in the air, heavy and full of fear.
“Hey, no way,” he replied, his tone firm. “You and me? We’re unbreakable. We’ll always be best friends, no matter what.” He held her gaze, his confidence in their bond filling her with a strange sense of hope. Then he quickly looked away “You sure you wanna bring that big ugly thing?” he said jokingly while pointing in to the box at the large wind-up analog clock they had purchased a few years ago at a yard sale.
Sophie took a deep breath, trying to quiet her anxiety. “Right. Best friends,” she repeated, “and Yes I want to bring Clocks, He’ll be our pet.” she said with a smile, but a part of her felt the weight of the unspoken words hanging between them. They hadn’t always been more than friends in her heart, but the last couple of years Sophie had felt a shift. A shift she kept buried deep in her heart, for the fear of ruining their friendship kept her silent.
“Hey, Let’s go grab some ice cream,” Jake suggested, breaking the tension. “One last adventure before we go.”
She smiled, grateful for his distraction. “Sounds perfect.”
As they walked to Jake’s truck, she felt the warm glow of the setting sun on her skin, a reminder of the many summers they had spent together. But beneath that warmth was an undercurrent of uncertainty. What lay ahead was a new chapter, but would it be one that could either solidify their bond or tear them apart.
-------------------------------------
The next morning Sophie woke up to the smell of Bacon and coffee. She could hear her Mom and Jake’s in the kitchen. Sophie hurried and threw on her clothes for the day and headed downstairs.
Her mother Lynn and Jake’s mom Kristie had gone into business together 3 years ago opening a small catering and party planning business they named Kristie Lynn’s, born from a Football boosters bake sale they had organized together. Lynn was one of the best chef’s in the city of Fairlight and Kristie had a knack for decorating and organization.
“Good Morning sleepy head” Lynn said to Sophie, as she walked in to the kitchen, “breakfast is almost ready Could you call the guys in from the Garage”
“Good morning Mom, Mrs, Kristie.” Sophie replied. As she headed to the garage door.
As she walked into the garage Sophie Spotted Jake, her older brother Oliver, Jake’s older brother Aaron and their dads gathered around a classic car that Sophie Father and brother had been restoring for the last 10 years. “Mom Said Breakfast is almost ready,” She said to them as she plopped onto a stool near the door. “Her and Kristie are ready for you all to wash up.” She said as she twisted back and forth.
At the sound of her voice Jakes head instantly popped up from under the hood. Abandoning his place at the car and walked over to Sophie with a big grin. “ Want some help setting the table?” he said.
“Sure thing” said Robert, Sophie’s dad as he gave a silent nudge to Miguel’s arm at Jake’s movement. But it fell on def ears as Sophie and Jake disappeared back into the kitchen.
“Like gravity,” Miguel said to Robert. “Except they don’t know it exists.”
“You got that right,” Robert said,
“Everyone sees it but them.” Replied Oliver
“It’s was so bad when we were in school with them that girls would ask us out just to find out if Jake and Sophie were a thing.” Aaran said.
Oliver giggled like a girl as he bumped shoulders with Aaran, “I’d like to say we help little sis and bro out and said no, but we got a lot of dates that way our Senior year.”
“Maybe they’ll figure it out over the next few months together.” Said Robert.
After breakfast Jake and Sophie said their goodbyes to their families, packed the basket of goodies and non-perishables Lynn had packed them and they hit the road…
