Chapter 1
The rain had arrived without warning, sweeping over Eden’s Valley in a torrent. Alia glanced up from her easel as the first drops pinged against her studio window, blurring her view of the mist-covered hills. She sighed, shifting her gaze back to the half-finished painting of the valley in early dawn. Something about the stillness before the rain felt incomplete, yet her brush refused to touch the canvas. She set her brush down, running a hand through her loose, dark curls. Maybe a walk in the rain would help her clear her mind. Throwing on her old coat, she stepped outside, letting the cool rain kiss her skin as she wandered through the quiet streets. The town seemed to transform under the rain, everything muted yet full of hidden life. As she crossed the bridge over the river, she noticed a figure huddled beneath a lamppost, drenched but seemingly unbothered. She couldn’t make out his face, only the silhouette of a man lost in thought. Something about him struck her – a strange sense of déjà vu, though she couldn’t recall ever meeting him. He wore a worn leather jacket and clutched a notebook close to his chest, shielding it from the rain. She lingered for a moment, curiosity tugging at her. But just as quickly, she shook her head and continued walking, unwilling to intrude. Meanwhile, Ethan felt her gaze even before he saw her. He looked up, catching a fleeting glimpse of her retreating figure as she disappeared into the mist. For reasons he couldn’t explain, he felt drawn to her, as if her presence were a lifeline in the loneliness he’d chosen for himself. The memory of her lingered with him, mingling with the sound of the rain and the whispers of past regrets. And as he turned to leave, he found himself hoping he would see her again in this quiet, rainy town – even though he knew it might be easier if he never did.
