There was a lot of traffic—at the small-town level, of course—and the girl was careful not to let her companion leave the sidewalk and end up on the road. For more than an hour now, he had been zigzagging, visibly exhausted. So she held his hand and corrected his trajectory regularly. When they reached the other side, she guided him to his house and when they arrived there, he looked around, astonished. He hadn’t realized the path they had been following. The vampire pouted in annoyance. “I thought we had to see Mr. Droski?” “I’ll go alone. You can barely stand upright and I have no intention of carrying you.” she hesitated for a moment. “Do you need blood already?” she whispered.
