THE BAD BOY’S FIRST KISS
CHAPTER 3
DEVVY’S POV
“WE heard Hunter gave you something. What is that thing?" the tallest girl asked.
“I-it’s just a key," I replied promptly.
She raised a brow. “Why did he give you a key?”
I gulped silently. This girl is scary! “He said it’s for my mom from his mom.”
“And why is that?” she added.
“Maybe... uhm, I don’t know. He didn’t tell the reason, and it’s just that his mom and my mom are friends. Please don’t get mad at me. I’m not into him. We’re not even friends. Hunter is all yours,” I told her. The words were also meant for her other friends.
“Is that so? But are you mad now? You sound mad.”
Why is she so hard to convince? All I said was true. And I am not angry.
Before I could reply, Yannie spoke first. “She isn’t mad.”
“You shut up. I’m not talking to you,” the tallest girl instantly said, glaring at Yannie.
“What are you really up to, huh? You want to fight?” My eyes widened at Mikayla’s remarks.
Oh, s**t! How brave of her! If we fight, I’m super dead. I don’t know how to fight. Well, Mikayla and Yannie... I think they could fight.
“If she’s not telling the truth, of course, we’ll fight,” the girl with a mole in the face said bravely, crossing her arms over her chest.
“We don’t want it, so just leave us alone. We aren’t kids anymore,” I told them.
“But we want it,” some of the girls said, and they readied themselves by doing some stretches.
“Hey, girls! What’s the commotion here?” All our eyes diverted to the guy behind the mad girls. It was Hunter who spoke. My heart suddenly jolted when I saw Matthew with him and Troy. Without any cue, I ran away, leaving my two best friends.
“Devvy! Don't leave yet! Wait for us!” my best friends shouted.
“Sorry, girls. I’m so shy right now because of Matthew.” It was only me who could hear what I was saying, though.
Later, I got home, panting so hard with sweat all over me. I think I could hardly breathe. And I’m so bad; I left my friends there.
I took my phone out and sent them a message of apology; then, I drank cold water from the refrigerator. I noticed that my parents were still not around.
***
IN the morning, when I woke up, I received a message from someone.
From +63917*******: Hi Dev. Im sorry about yesterday. Im sorry if they scared you. I already warned the girls not to do something bad to you. Its me, Hunter. :)
I don’t have a load, so I did not reply. A sigh of relief came out of my mouth. What he said is good news. I really hope those girls would not do that again. If I were alone at that time, and Hunter did not arrive, maybe I was dead meat already.
“Oh, you’re already done, sweetie? I’ll fetch you to school,” my mom said.
I nodded. “Yes, mom. By the way, Hunter told me yesterday to give this to you. It’s from Mrs. Hannah,” I informed her, handing her the key. I forgot to give it to her yesterday because I slept early. I had not even had my dinner. My parents thought I already ate. Maybe, I got too tired from running yesterday. That’s why I slept early.
“Thank you, sweetie. Let’s go?” mom asked, and I nodded in response. Dad’s not going to work today because he has an important matter to do.
“Do you know Matthew—what’s his last name again?” mom suddenly asked when we were in the car already and she was driving.
The name she’d mentioned made my heart leap. “Perhaps, are you referring to Matthew Castillo, mom?”
I bit my lower lip secretly, not showing any clue that she might see. She might guess it right about me liking Matthew. Mom would then tease me forever. I know her. She once teased me with Hunter back then. I cried that day and told her I didn’t like Hunter. She thought I liked him because we didn’t speak to each other; that we were shy to approach each other. The moment I explained the truth, that was the time she stopped teasing me.
“You got it right, sweetie. So, you know him?”
I avoided eye contact with her before I answered, “Uhm, yeah. Why did you ask about him?”
“You’re in the same school, right?”
I nodded to her question.
“I think I know the reason why he’s like that.”
“What do you mean?” I found myself getting interested in the topic.
“About him being a bad boy.”
“Do you know him?”
“Nope. I just saw him once or twice. I can’t really remember. One friend of mine knows his parents and told me what happened.”
Even though I got more interested, I didn’t bother to ask her more about Matthew.
“Anyways, just forget about it. It’s another person’s life. It’s not our business. I’m sorry if I suddenly opened up a topic about someone we don’t really know well.” She smiled at me.
“Well, yeah,” I agreed.
I arrived at school in a few minutes, so I just bid mom goodbye. To my surprise, I saw Matthew with a new girl when I just entered the school gate. What I really meant with a new girl is that he had a girlfriend last time. And now, he’s with a new girl. Again. I’m sure he broke up with the girl I saw with him last time.
And look who’s the girl with him now. It’s none other than Calisha, the highest-ranking student from our batch in this school; the Top 1 of all fourth-year high school students here.
I was the Top 4 last school year, and now, I’m currently at the third spot based on the results that the school posted on the bulletin board after the recent exam. I don’t know if I can beat her in academics. I don’t really mind what my spot is, though. I’m just typically studying. I’m not competing with anyone. My goal is just to learn and graduate for me to have a bright future ahead.
Matthew and Calisha looked so sweet. I saw how she pinched him in the arm, and he rubbed that part but still smiled at her. Oh, gosh! I suddenly felt a prick of pain piercing my heart. Seeing this lovey-dovey scene of them is tearing me into pieces.
I couldn’t stand looking at them for so long, so I chose to look away. This way, the hurt wouldn’t go tremendous as hell.
“It’s okay, Dev.”
“Holy cow!” I blurted out as I shied when two hands touched my shoulders. “Oh, gosh! You startled me! You two are so bad!” I whined, holding my chest.
Yannie and Mikayla did the peace sign. “We’re sorry, Dev. We’re about to get mad at you now because you left us yesterday, but we know your oh-so-handsome-and-hot crush was there. And now, you are hurt deep within, so we understand.” Yannie tapped my shoulder, trying to comfort me.
I pouted. “I’m sorry.”
“Well, we’re over it now, so as the thing we did to you just now. We understand your broken heart,” Mikayla said in her heartfelt voice.
“Let’s hurry now and pull the hair off that b*tch!” Yannie shouted.
I just heaved a sigh. I know she was just kidding.
We arrived in our classroom, but I felt conscious when my classmates looked at me with different reactions. However, one person stood out among them. She was just sitting on the teacher’s table with her arms crossed. She looked so furious at me. If only a glare could kill, I might be dead now.
“Why are you looking at Devvy that way?” It was Mikayla who asked Calisha, the girl who was with Matthew a while ago, and the Top 1.
Calisha smirked at us—no! Not at us. Just at me alone. “You stole my diary, you freak!” she barked.
