CHAPTER 1:A LOWLY BARTENDER
“I love you. I’m going to make you my wife.”
Lillian set the glass down without looking up.
She heard him, of course she did. The whole club could’ve heard that line if they were paying attention.
The slight roll of her eyes as she turned her back to him was enough of an answer.
She didn’t speak right away. She Let it hang, just enough to get a reaction out of him.
“That’s the third time you’ve said that today,” she said, reaching for the whiskey.
Kai leaned forward, resting his elbow on the edge,he couldn't help it. He staggered his eye balls round her almost ripping the cloths out of her with one look, he let it settle and let a deep breath out.
“I meant it all three times, you're a beautiful woman,Lilian.....i want you”
She poured in the Whisky slowly, letting the liquid hit the bottom of the glass without spilling a drop.
Two fingers, no ice. Just how he liked it.
She slid it toward him, not looking up. “You’re drinking early tonight.”
He didn’t pick it up right away. Just watched her, like he was reading something behind her movements.
“I’m not drunk.”
“Didn’t say you were. But you’re definitely not thinking straight.”
He tilted his head, eyes still on her face. “I’ve never thought straighter.”
It earned him a glance. Brief anyways, Her expression didn’t shift, but her eyes lingered for a second longer than necessary. Then she looked away again, wiping the bar where no one had touched it.
“You’re wasting your breath,” she said.
“I don’t mind.”
His voice was pitiful. Not playful. Just… real. And that was the problem.
She turned, met his gaze full-on.
“Don’t do this here.”
“I like doing it here, I prefer to do it here.” Kai said with a faint smile almost forcing it out of his serious face he put on earlier.
“You can't run when there are people around.”
She scoffed under her breath. “That’s because I work here.”
He nodded, casually lifting the drink but still not drinking it. “Then serve me the truth.”
Her face stalled, barely. Not a smile more like disbelief.
“You think this is the right place for that?”
“I think it’s the only place you let me get close to you, enough to see that look on your face,”
"what look."
"the one you're wearing right now, uncomfortable, denial, yes Lilian, denial that you don't want it as bad as I do, you've almost succeeded in making me believe you don't, almost,Lilian....almost!"
His words settled into her chest. Not heavy. Not soft. Just there. Like he knew how to get under her skin without even raising his voice.
She stayed quiet, reaching under the counter to adjust a few napkins that didn’t need fixing.
“I’m not joking, Lillian.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I told my father about you.”
Her hand froze just long enough for him to notice.
“You what?”
“I told him I want to get married and I've found the one, lilian.”
She straightened, both hands on the counter now. She stared at him like he’d said something dangerous, not romantic.
“You can’t just ” she looks for the right words but couldn't find them.
“I can.”
“You don’t get to walk in here and make those kinds of decisions, okay?.”
“I’m not making a decision,” he said simply. “I’m stating a fact, tell me you don't want me Lilian, without mercy, look me in the eye and say the words to me and I'll walk away and never look back”
She folded her arms, shifting her weight slightly, defensive now, but not aggressive.
Her eyes held his, steady.
“This thing between us,whatever it is, it doesn’t come with contracts. Or fake promises. why not let me be that man for you, maybe not for you,but do this for me and stop hurting me."
“Don’t twist this.”
“I’m not twisting anything. You let me in, Lillian, you did..... I'm all in but you wouldn't let me in.”
She sighed, slow and quiet. “It was a mistake, one moment of foolishness, we had a deal it won't happen again, you promised”
He laughed, soft and humorless. “You don’t make mistakes. You calculate everything, you're one of the smartest people I've come across lilian, you don't make mistakes.”
"you got all that knowledge and wisdom from a one night stand?"
Her eyes narrowed slightly, and she looked away again, this time toward the lights flickering across the dancefloor. People were laughing, dancing, spilling drinks. The world kept spinning.
“I don’t love you,” she said, you're a handsome man, this entire house reeks of prettier ladies with class and something to offer, I'm not your girl.
Kai didn’t look offended. He looked like a man who had heard the wrong thing, but wasn’t ready to believe it,he leans closer, looks into her face almost to kiss her.
"That's the thing Lilian, you're different from them, there is just something". he stares further, almost like he discovered something new.
“i understand you're protecting yourself.”
He took a slow sip.
“You think I’m like them,” he said.
She didn’t answer, her right hand tapping into her phone, the message box open and she struggled to put the words to together to send her text message.
“You think I’ll break you.”
The air between them thinned, his eyes fixed on hers, tense and straightforward.
Kai leaned forward again, voice lower now.
“ I plan to introduce you to my brother, Lilian,i have nothing to lose, Rowan is first in line, his marriage would be based off some contract and benefit as father wants, I'm a free man Lilian....no contract marriage or second wife drama if that is what you fear."
He pauses while looking straight into her face, her left hand busy wiping off a perfectly clean Surface, the right hand busy putting her text message together.
He leans closer and grabs her by the hand.
Zayne? he would probably make a joke off it,but he will come around.
She didn't move. Just held his stare like she could maybe freeze time if she tried hard enough.
“Do they know you’re mine?” he asked again, softer this time.
“I’m not yours.
His smile was sad now. Not disappointed ,just tired.
“I wish you believed that.”
She turned, grabbed a water bottle from the mini fridge behind her, twisted the cap like she needed something to focus on, as she completes and forwards the text that read "He really means it,what do I do mom."
She caught his reflection in the back mirror, trying to stand and approach into the staff space.
“Don’t,” she said.
But her voice didn’t carry weight, not a enough to send him back to his sit.
He stepped in anyway.
“I’m not like them,” he whispered, standing close behind her. “I’m not pretending.”
“You should go.”
“I’m not leaving without an answer.”
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.”
she tries to say something bold but her mind wouldn't pick any reasonable response in all that heat.
“No,” he said, brushing his knuckles down the side of her arm, slow. “I’m just being honest.”
She didn’t turn to him.... She just said, very quietly, “Someone’s going to see.”
His reply came warm against her skin.
“Let them.”
*******************
She felt his words in her ear down to her skin, warm very warm, and for a second she almost let it consume her.
A low chuckle broke that quiet between them. It came From the side..... amused, and meant to be heard.
“Didn’t take you for the sentimental type, Kai.”
Rowan Vescovi walked in from the shadows near the VIP hallway, one hand in his pocket, the other holding a half-finished glass of something expensive. The smile on his face looked like he’d been watching for a while.
“A lowly bartender?” His gaze slid to Lillian, then back to Kai. “That’s what’s got you breaking curfew, little brother? What would Father think about this?”
He bites on his glass, gulps down the entire drink and slides it over to Lilian, his gaze replete with scum.
Kai straightened, his jaw tightening. “Walk away, Rowan.”
Rowan’s grew more tasty for words . “No, really. Does he know you’re spending your entire life on whiskey and women who pour it?”
Lillian’s fingers curled tighter around the bar rag, but her face stayed unreadable as she filled up the empty cup tossed towards her.
“Careful,” Kai warned, his tone low.
Rowan leaned on the bar, close enough for her to catch the scent of his cologne. “Or what?
You’ll introduce her to Zayne? I wonder what he would think of this madness.” he shrugs and admired his already filled up glass.
For the first time tonight, Lillian caught a flicker in Kai’s eyes - not charm, Something darker.
