Chapter 23 Things were awkward at dinner that night, like Dad didn’t know what to say, and breakfast on Sunday morning was held in complete silence. Jason had gone home, and Chloe didn’t stay the night—probably, Shane thought bitterly, on Dad’s request, and so it felt… Oppressive. Dad just kept looking at him through narrowed eyes, and opening his mouth to say something and then not. He took Shane’s plate back before he was done, and didn’t say anything about seconds. He gave Shane no chores to do, which was usually what happened when he got grounded, and so Shane was left to simply linger in the silence. He felt trapped, and the sick feeling was coming back. Dad had made all the right noises yesterday, but now… Now he was acting Shane was invisible. Or he didn’t know who Shane was. A
