📖 CHAPTER 11 – CLAIMED WITHOUT PERMISSION (PART 1) The moment they crossed into his territory, everything changed. Claire felt it before she understood it. The air shifted. Warmer. Heavier. Not suffocating—aware. It brushed against her skin like something unseen had taken notice of her presence, circling, pressing in just enough to be felt. Her steps slowed without meaning to. The ground beneath her boots carried a quiet heat, steady and constant, unlike anything in Silver Star. This land wasn’t shaped to appear perfect. It was shaped to endure. Tall, dark pines surrounded them, their trunks marked as if fire had once claimed them and never truly let go. The earth itself held warmth, as if something burned deep below the surface—something ancient. “This place…” she murmured. Jay Kael didn’t stop. “What about it?” “It feels like it’s watching me.” That made him glance back. Not surprised. Certain. “It is.” Her breath caught. “What does that mean?” “It means you’re not just walking into my land,” he said, voice lower now, more grounded. “You’re being accepted into it.” The words settled deep. Accepted. Her chest tightened around the unfamiliar feeling. She didn’t know what to do with that. Her pace faltered again. This time, he stopped. He turned fully toward her. The shift in him was immediate. Focused. On her. “You’re exhausted.” “I’m fine.” His eyes darkened. “You’re lying.” The directness hit harder than it should have. Her shoulders tensed instinctively. “I’m not—” “You are.” He stepped closer. Slow. Intentional. Her body reacted before her thoughts could catch up. A rush of warmth spread through her, sharper now, more defined—settling low and pulling tight in a way that made her breath unsteady. Her legs shifted slightly, grounding herself— And his gaze dropped. Locked. A low sound rumbled in his chest. Not anger. Awareness. “Stop.” Her eyes snapped up. “I didn’t do anything—” “You did.” His voice dropped, roughened by restraint. “And you don’t even realize it.” Her pulse quickened. “What is wrong with me?” He closed the distance between them. Too close. Close enough that every breath she took carried his scent—warm, smoky, grounding in a way that made her body respond again. “Nothing is wrong with you.” Her breath hitched. His hand settled at her waist. Slow. Deliberate. “You’re reacting exactly the way you’re supposed to.” Her fingers curled against his chest, holding there—steadying herself against the pull instead of resisting it. “Then why does it feel like this?” she whispered. His grip tightened just slightly. “Because no one ever let you feel it before.” That landed deeper than anything else. Accepted. 🔥 End Chapter 11
